Came to this park to walk the dog. Hamlin Dog Park is obviously located in Hamlin Park. It specifically is located next to the tennis courts in the southwest part of this. A small area but enough room to run around. This also has poop bags and a fountain. A pretty basic ass area. It's small and there not that much to it. There's a fenced area for dogs to run around and that's about all they have it seems. One thing is that it's close to the tennis courts. These make it convenient to those looking to do something else while hanging out with a dog or some other kind of pet. For sure a good place to bring a dog. It's pretty clean, without poop everywhere. This has lots of baseball but this is where to go for walking dogs or whoever. read more

It's a nice day today and my pup is four months old; I wanted him to play with some new dogs before it gets cold outside. The people that were there today were extremely nice which is a plus. It's nice to be able to communicate with people who aren't rude. The park was ok, a bit dirty; I didn't like the gravel, especially the area in the back where a mud-pitt forms. People say it's a well kept park,(it does look nice from the pictures posted, especially with all the dogs) so come spring I'll probably give this park another chance. Maybe it's just a bad experience at the end of the year. I had to travel about 15-20 to get here, no dog parks in my area, so if you're like me, maybe you can check out the portage park dog park. It's a nice area and the dog park is half gravel half turf. Not as big though but its pretty close to it; nice big square area. Nice drinking fountain and bags to pick up waste. My next door neighbor and I visited Hamlin a couple of weeks ago with our two pups who are BFF's. We usually go to Wiggly, but we thought we would mix it up a bit. It was during the week in the early evening and the park was not busy. There were five other dogs that were running around. My pup Maggie was focused on inspecting this place, sniffing every nook and cranny, while her BFF ran around with her new friends. Hamlin is L-shaped, winding around a tennis court. It felt weird, but I guess I could get used to it. The only thing I didn't like was the gravel. Since Maggie is a mix of hunting breeds, this brings out her tendency to dig and see what treasures she could find in the rocks. As a result, she brings home all the dust from the gravel! At the paved dog parks, she runs and socializes more which is what I'm trying to do with a pup her age. Overall, I like it, but probably won't be regular there. read more

We've visited Wiggly Field and Churchill Dog Park already, so this one is just a lowly two stars. The others are definitely better. This park was just blech. When we arrived, there was mud everywhere. It was kind of gross. I'm not sure who is in charge of the upkeep of this park, but it was a total swamp and it sucked for all of the dogs. Dogs get dirty at parks, anyway, but this made it 10x worse. This park was entirely gravel except for one small run of grass over on the west end of the park. The gravel was oddly spread around which is what lead to the creation of giant mud puddles everywhere. There was also NO water anywhere, which is really bad for the dogs. They run around and play which makes them super sweaty and tired - they need water! My boyfriend had to walk all the way to the other end of the park (not the dog park - actual Hamlin Park) to find a small drinking fountain to fill a gallon jug that was left at the park above the communal bowl. Lame. It took like 10 minutes to fill the jug from the tiny fountain spout. Other dog parks at least have a hose and spigot somewhere nearby to give the dogs fresh water, especially when its hot. There also weren't many people or dogs here, so it was fun to let the dog run around but there weren't really any dogs for him to play with. All in all, this is probably the last park we'll go to. Wiggly is still my favorite and I know the others are better (Montrose, Churchill, etc). read more

The park is actually really awesome and well-kept, the problem I have is with the owners. Too many of them do not pay attention to anything their dogs are doing. One adorable pup came up to me to say hello but kept biting me -- no idea where the owner was while this was happening and unfortunately, bad owners give good dogs a bad rep. Another incident happened when I decided to run up and down the back strip with my dogs to give them a bit of exercise; another dog decided to join in (which I didn't mind at all) but he/she kept harassing my pups. This dog was about 50 lbs while mine are 15 TOPS so we had to leave. :( Please, please, please, watch your dogs. Would you let your toddler run around without any supervision? I hope not, dogs should be treated the same way. read more

We came here on the first nice weekend day of the season, and the place was packed! Totally expected and totally great for my dog. The park is completely fenced in, clean, and is a great space for dogs. There is usually a great mix of dogs - large and small, playful and shy, so there is something for every dog. The owners are generally very nice and aware of what's going on (they're not sitting and reading a book or anything). I've seen a few times where dogs have started barking at one another or getting aggressive, and the owners are pretty quick to step in before things escalate. The only reason to knock off a star is that the park is covered in peat gravel. My dog doesn't love the feeling of it when she walks on it, so sometimes we're better off letting her run around in the big grassy field in the same park. Plus, after some rain, the ground gets really dirty and the only way you can take your pup there is if the trip is immediately followed by a bath when you get home. We go as much as we can during the warm weather. read more

This not really a dog "park", but a dog "area". It is relatively small, and it's little stones, I think it's called pea gravel. So it's not the best for running fast, but there is enough room to play, and it's not as crowded or big as other areas. You need to TRAIN YOUR DOG BEFORE GOING TO A DOG PARK :-) You just have to, or else bad things can happen when people don't have control over their dogs. We have a few clients who live in the area who like to use this dog park to do training. So I have been in here training dogs, and what a great distraction it is! We do lessons in the area all the time. read more

I like this park. I bring my step-puppy Weebles here twice a week due to it's close proximity to her daddy's house. We have gone numerous times and she practically has a heart attack from sheer excitement when she sees where we are headed. Except for a few really, really cold days she has always had some playmates and only once did she run into some bullies with ignorant owners. Otherwise she has a blast running around and all of the owners are very friendly. The only thing I don't like about this park is the surface which is tiny gravel. This is a small dog park, with not much to offer other than a latched gate. It is a pretty nice park, well maintained, and lots of water for the dogs. There are some benches for the humans to sit down on. There is no division between small and large dogs so stay cautious. read more

Took Lily here today for a change of pace. She loved the big dogs that were there upon our arrival! Loved the people- most totally friendly and watching their dogs. Also loved that 1 owner removed her dog who wasn't getting along with anybody... Sucks when that happens, but I'm glad others do it too! Also loved the water jugs and the shade. Nice addition to the park. Didn't love the pea gravel and the dirtiness. I know dog parks aren't sparkling gems of cleanliness, but I think the gravel harbors more grime and gross stuff than usual. Also didn't love the layout, with the awkward run area that is hard to watch with dogs going back and forth. We'll be back. This is the closest park to our Logan Square abode, and the mile walk back really takes the edge of Lily's energy, enough so that she's now snoring away on the couch :) read more

First let me say that nothing brings me more joy than to see my dog running "free" for a couple of hours. Poor thing--cooped up all day long while mom's at work. That being said, Hamlin Park, which is the closest dog park to my apartment, does its job. No, it's not the biggest area in the city for your dog to run. But c'mon people, we live in a city. This isn't a farming community. I haven't had a bad experience yet. And this is especially important to me since I have a pit bull mix. Yes, the stigma is there! Yes, people are total a-holes about pit bulls sometimes! But no one even thought twice about my little dude. (She is very well behaved, if I do say so myself.) Owners, for the most part, keep watch over their dogs pretty well here, and I haven't witnessed any major scuffles in the short time I've been frequenting this place. Check it out! read more

This is my go to dog park because it's the closest. It's not my favorite but it works. It's an area that Samuel can run around like a maniac. The lay out of this park is an "L" shape so it sometimes awkward trying to keep an eye on your dog. On the upside of this the narrow area is almost like a dog run so you can play fetch with your pooch. The only down side is the water hose is located there and there's usually a baby pool and it can get a little dirty and messy. The reason I'm giving this 3 stars is because it's always hit or miss when I'm there. The people and the dogs are so random. Sometimes it's great and our dogs are interacting and you get to have a friendly conversation with another dog owner. Other times I've been and everyone keeps to themselves and the dogs are snobby and a little aggressive. Samuel maybe 30 pounds, short but long but he can run with the best of canines. He can play with small dogs or big dogs. Once I went and there was a guy with a larger dog (I think it was a boxer or maybe a pit mix) and Samuel was trying to play with him. The big dog was getting a little aggressive and was just coming after Samuel who comes running like the wind to me and hides under my legs. The guy was scolding my dog and praising his dog. It was so odd. Samuel would come from under my legs to try and just run around by him self but this dog was just picking on him. Excuse my choice of words but this guy was a total douche bag. It was a bummer because we weren't even there for that long I decided to take Samuel out. I walked him around the park area then we left. That's my one of a few experiences that I've had that was disturbing but we still go to this park if we can't get anywhere else. A little bonus to this place is that it's in a great little park area so there's a place to walk around if the the dog park gets a little rowdy. read more

This park has a lot of pit/dobermans with bad owners. I went there a couple of Friday evenings and a group of pit owners were there drinking beer in the park. My dog was inside the gate and in less than 10 seconds, 2 of there dogs attacked my dog. The owners did nothing. After other instances of bad dog owners, I looked for other places for my dog to run. I know there are good owners here, too, but too many bad ones to subject my dog to risk of injury. I got tired of wondering whether or not my dog was safe that day to be in this park. It is also kind of funky dirty. I know it's a dog park and they are all kind of funky dirty, but this one is disgusting if there is rain. I think there are better parks with better owners. read more

Living in Roscoe Village, this is my dog park of choice. It is a small park, but great if you need to keep a close eye on your doggie. They have 6 comfortable seats, and tons of ledge seating if it's packed there. Double doors for safety is always a huge plus. Mostly neighborhood folks there during the day. The only negative is the gates are sort of short, and I think my dog could hop it. Cool local dog park. Always nice dogs and dog owners there. read more

Every dog park in Chicago cold be larger; but Hamlin is a reasonable size for its area, and boasts pea gravel, a water source, dappled shade, and a run alongside the tennis courts. Our Bostons enjoyed it, and we both found the people very friendly and watchful of their dogs' behavior. We were there on a beautiful Saturday and because of the ball games going on in the main Park (fun!), parking was a challenge. We didn't mind walking through the residential streets however, a nice area. Recommended. read more

Dog parks....they are hard for me to get used to. I play tennis here and always hear dogs barking and possibly getting into fights. Makes me nervous. I am admittedly a wimp though, I know I know. However, have a dog. Dog needs friends. Fears aside, away we go. The actual park is kind of small, but there is a side area for dogs to run after tennis balls and they have lots of jugs of water for the thirsty pups. The run is actually just rocks on the ground, which is nice for clean up but it would also be nice to have some grass (though that may not be feasible) The rocks are dusty but you can brush your dog off pretty quickly. For the most part, everyone is really nice there and there are usually kids there too, so people feel comfortable. Here is the thing, a guy brought his two kids in a stroller (so little kids) and so he wasnt watching his dog. His dog....decided to have a little too much fun with my dog and the guy was just like "oh chester. um...stop?" (clearly this dog was a chester! i mean look at what he was doing?) Yes. They are dogs. Yes, this is more common but yes, it was kind of shocking to see. I mean come on, watch your dog. His dog then started to snarl at my dog, which of course, stressed me out. Either take your kids to park sans dog, or take your dog to park, sans kids. I just dont like when people ignore their pets... However, most of the people there are watching their dogs and playing with them. Everyone seems pretty nice. I am going to see how the summer goes before adding another start (this one would probably be a 3.5 star rating) and then go from there. read more

This place is great, there is lots of room for dogs to run back and forth and back again. It can get muddy after a rain, so keep that in mind if you don't want your dog getting dirty. (i had the experience of my Otis rolling in mud here, yep, he loved it) There isn't running water, but there are usually huge water barrels full of water and a couple of bowls. Last time we were here there was neither, so bring some water just in case, don't want to shorten play time!! read more

Well, it's not bad. The dogs are usually on their best behavior. The owners watch their dogs and I rarely find poo not picked up. The only issue is some of the owners will be very rude to your dog when in fact their spoiled dog was being a punk. On more than 1 occasion I had to "tell off" another patron because they were yelling at an innocent dog owner. These were three separate women on different days who had out of control dogs. When someone else's dog attempted to tell their dog to back off, the ladies both screamed at the dog owner. That kind of ignorance I find absurd and annoying. That said, some of the people here are way off but if you don't mind speaking up for yourself or anyone else who you feel fit then go ahead. :) read more

We drive over from Logan Square to bring our English Bulldog to the Hamlin Dog Park and he LOVES it. Everyone we've met here has been pretty nice, and their dogs are fairly well-behaved...except that mean little jack russel mix who was harassing my poor beast. heh. Not a good park for small dogs. I have a 20lb terrier. He likes big dogs, but not 5 or more who immediately rush him. Do not bring your smaller dogs here unless it loves aggressive bull and pit-mixes. read more

Disclaimer: I have a small dog who thinks he's a big dog. I have brought him here a hand full of times and the big dogs at the park have let my dog continue his delusion of being the big dog on the block. Seriously, it's a nice dog park. We went there on a random, blustery weekday during my stint as a "full-time student" and we met some regulars who were great. It's pretty tiny, which puts it below the Ohio Dog Park and it doesn't really have any amenities like the Churchill Dog Park, but it was great for meeting some new dogs and getting some exercise. Seeing as how it's really the only dog park I've been to so far I have nothing to judge it against. BUT since Thunder loves coming here and it's only a few blocks from my house..it gets 4 stars! It's mostly a medium/large dog park, the smaller dogs here have to either play with the big boys or stay close to mom and dad. This is a great place to take your pup for a little play time. There always seems to be other dogs to play with and other people to chat or not chat with. People generally pick up after their dogs and there is water donated by a nearby vet in the summer. The ground is covered in gravel, which seems good for doggy feet. I've found asphalt or rubber can be a little harsh on my pups paws. There is a shovel and extra bags for when your dog poops way more times than you thought they would. There are also plenty of tennis balls to throw around thanks to the tennis court next door. Overall, I highly recommend the Hamlin Dog Park. read more

Best Dog Park in the City. It is never too crowded and there is plenty of water and tennis balls for the pups to play with. There is ample room to run around if they feel like it and other areas where they can just sit by their owner. All the owners I have come across are very friendly and do their best to police their OWN dogs. No body comes and lets their dog loose while they sit and read. My dog plays EXTREMELY loud and I get embarrassed that others may think he is aggressive and ask us to leave but everyone understands and thinks it is pretty funny that he growls and snarls and barks but wags his tail and runs around the whole time. I have heard bad comments about WiggleyVille and other parks and do not have a single complaint about Hamlin Park. read more

Nice little park. Haven't been there in a while- I think they have pea gravel or something like that now. In the winter it can be a skating rink. This whole area is very sweet and well taken care of. If your dog is good off leash you can let them tear around over by the baseball fields before you go socialize at the dog friendly area. I don't live in this area, but everyone in this neighborhood seem very nice as well. read more

I really like the layout of this dog park. However, there is rarely anyone there. I've taken my little girl there several times all of which there are no dogs, and If there are, their owners givie me the eye, and take there dogs out. I see people walking with dogs constantly. Yet no one come into the park. My dog is extremely well behaved so I know that is not an issue. It's just a bummer these people almost take a snotty stance about not allowing their animals to play with other animals. read more

I wanted to start off by saying that I've been taking my dog to Hamlin Park for the past 8 months or so and it's been a great place for her to burn off some energy and interact with the other dogs. The whole park is gravel and there are big water containers with bowls that are available for the dogs to drink out of. There isn't a whole lot of seating so you end up standing around most of the time, but that's not that big of a deal. For the most part you'll see the same dogs and same people in there, definitely a local neighborhood type of dog park. Parking around the park is non permit and usually tons of spaces are available. With all of the good things said, I did want to add that just this past weekend on saturday I took my dog to Hamlin like I have many times before and she was attacked by another dog. This was a first for me and it was scary, the owner seemed to take forever to get over by the dogs to pull her dog off of mine, and they even escaped from both of us after the first attempt and the dog went after her AGAIN. I was furious beyond words at the way this owner acted after the attack so i just walked out with my dog and left. As I was walking away I heard another dog yelp and that same dog had attacked another dog within 1 minute of me leaving. To the lady with the bernese mountain dog/lab mix looking dog- stop ruining it for the rest of us and keep your dog at home or on a leash. Its a shame that you cant train your dog to act nicely or to at least realize that he doesn't belong in a group off leash setting. read more

Everyone that comes here has been really friendly. The pebbles are nice for dogs who tumble over when chasing each other. The only problem is that because of the pebbles, if it rains the park is a mess for days. Also, plan on wearing sunscreen, there are only a few plastic chairs in the shady area. read more

I think this is an awesome dog park. Everyone that we have chatted with when we go there is super friendly, and everyone pays attention to what their dogs are doing. It is also nice and clean with plenty of tennis balls for the dogs to play with thanks to the tennis courts next door. All of Hamlin Park is really nice actually. I'm looking forward to trying out their free olympic sized pool too. We couldn't be happier that the park is in our neighborhood! read more
