This bakery must be one of the most beautifully situated in the world. It is located on the edge of the Exton estate, overlooking beautiful Rutland countryside. However, no one goes to a Bakery for a view an the baked goods therefore need to be to scratch. This is a bit of a mixed bag. The muffins (English not American) are a delight with get texture and taste. Eating them is seriously addictive. The rolls are also excellent with the white variety being an excellent base for a quality bacon sandwich at the weekend.
However, for me, I find the loaves of bread to be too dense and insufficiently airy for my taste. Others may like this of course. In addition, selection of sweeter baked goods is average at best. The custard tarts are particularly poor - falling into a black hole between British custard tarts and their Portugese breathren - and the cookies are, for my taste slightly overcooked.
Still, it is without doubt one of the better bakeries in the area and is obviously popular as there are now sister shops in Oakham and Stamford. read more
