My family's biggest mistake was trusting in Hallmark.
I had a family member at Hallmark and it was horrible. Grossly understaffed at night, constant turn-over of employees, many uncaring staff. It seemed that management was always cutting corners with such things as discontinuing soft drinks for residents and NO MEAL options! Food portions were SMALL and not at all what they promised in their materials. My family member got what was put on the plate in front of them and that was it. One of the biggest issues we found was that after checking with the state, we found out Hallmark had misrepresented itself by claiming they were a memory care facility when they weren't and never have been. All of their marketing materials promoted them as a memory care facility with a focus on the Best Friends Approach to care. I found out that only three people had been certified, one left, one was let go and the other is an owner. The certificate on their wall indicates that their certification was up in 2017. When I checked with new caregivers to see if they had been trained in the Best Friends Approach, the answer was always no. Then, a quick check with the state of Kentucky found they are no longer an assisted living facility either as they delicensed themselves. They held residents against their will by keeping the doors locked with no access to the code for residents to leave.
