My first experience with Ward Family Dentistry was Kim, the receptionist. She was compassionate and understanding. It was evident that she really wanted to be helpful. Every time I've seen her since, she continues to be helpful, thoughtful, and empathetic. Dr. Ward explains everything he's doing and takes time to answer questions with every visit. They make going to the dentist somewhat enjoyable and the least painful process as possible. It's in a good location in Edmond, so no matter where I move, it's pretty accessible. My husband just started going here to, and so he's happy that he found a dentist he trusts and has a good name in the town. I've also seen Dr. Kramer and Dr. Wilguess once or twice, and they are just as great as Dr. Waugh has been. The doc explained what was needed to be done, what had probably caused the issues, how I could prevent future issues and then walked me through everything he was doing. Our 19-year-old daughter was scheduled to have three cavities filled and has severe anxiety surrounding needles. On Tuesday, the office told us they had verified our insurance and that nitrous oxide was covered. On Thursday morning, the day of her appointment, we were told it was not covered and would cost approximately $225. Our daughter still went to the appointment. When faced with the numbing injections without nitrous oxide, she became overwhelmed and began crying. She was not rude, aggressive, combative, or disrespectful--she was simply terrified. Dr. Porter told my partner that our daughter would be better off returning to her previous dentist and compared her to other patients he refers to pediatric dentistry because they require specialized care. It was not the population he referenced that bothered us, but the way our daughter's anxiety was characterized simply because she became frightened and cried. My partner asked if she could have the cavities treated elsewhere and return to Porter Family Dentistry for routine cleanings. Dr. Porter said no, explaining that dentists don't "share" patients or like them going back and forth because once they start the work, they prefer to finish it. Even more surprising, when my partner asked about our 18-year-old son, who does not have the same concerns, she was told he should leave the practice as well. As someone who works in healthcare, I completely understand referring a patient when their needs exceed what a provider feels equipped to manage. What I don't understand is why anxiety over injections meant our daughter could no longer receive routine preventative dental care--or why her brother was dismissed along with her. Patients are often at their most vulnerable when they're frightened. Those are the moments when compassion, patience, and professionalism matter most. Our daughter needed a little extra reassurance. Instead, our entire family walked away without a dentist. We will gladly take our business elsewhere, but I am sharing this so other patients and families dealing with dental anxiety can make an informed decision.
