I don't want to like Halfords. I know that's a bad way to approach a shop, but it's just so cheery…read moreand clinical and not at all how a bike or car shop should be. I like tiny, cluttered shops with befuddled assistants and ancient relics of bike parts. Still, it has to be said, Halfords is pretty useful and has most things you could need. The staff here are more knowledgeable than other branches I've been in, although some know more about bikes and others more about cars. As I know very little about either, I feel they're very helpful without being patronising. They have bikes which are fine for cycling round town, although the suspension and disc brakes are a bit OTT for Oxford, and are rather rubbish. They do oil, tyres, puncture repair kits and all the tools you might need to go with them. They also stock loads of car things: I got everything I needed for driving in Europe here - first aid kit, headlamp deflectors, fluorescent jackets, etc. The own brand stuff is usually cheap, but for things where quality matters, I'd go for better quality, higher priced things. I've heard bad things about their pumps breaking, especially the electric ones. In conclusion: useful but not necessary. The Tesco of the mechanical world.

Bought a car radio that turned out to be a bit complicated as I needed extra cables but the unflappable Jason was ever helpful and I got it sorted in the end and didn't mind the hassle. I could gaze at him all day ahem sorry. Great place find everything you need there

Aladdin saw our review on Qype and promptly sent us a letter with a cheque saying they had indeed overcharged us. That is a very decent response, and we would recommend this garage for their honesty and committment to customer relations.

We were completely ripped off, labour was expensive and the car broke down a week later…read more We took our car in for a service a few months ago, with a list of things to fix, mainly a rattle in the boot, blocked windscreen wash sprayers and a leak in the back light. General wear and tear. We were quoted £250 for a basic service, plus charges for additional parts & labour, if needed. My husband asked to be called before any servicing was started, and they called saying the brake pads and brake shoes had to be replaced, and filters changed, etc. He gave them the go ahead. At the end of the day, my husband was presented with a bill of £873, and was given £40 off after asking for a discount. This is over half the value of the car! What stunned us was the bill: around £77 just for three different types of oil, and 4.5 hours of labour - at £74 per hour! And as we drove off, the rattle was still there! And the windscreen sprayers sprayed water directly over the car, missing the windscreen. We went back to report both of these issues, and the sprayers were fixed, but the mechanic said that he'd have to change our back shocks to get rid of the rattle, at extra expense for the parts (fair enough) as well as more labour! The rattle was top of our list to be fixed, and it was totally overlooked. We said no to them changing the shocks, since we now couldn't afford more work on the car. Then, a week later, my husband was driving home from work and the rear left wheel seized. He managed to safely get the car to the side of the road. He was stuck in Bicester on the side of the road for 3 hours waiting for a tow truck. He got it towed straight to Aladdin, and we were there at opening time the next morning (Saturday). The new wheel bearing had been tightened too tight, and made the wheel come to a complete stop. He owner spent 4 hours fixing and replacing it, and there wasn't an apology, nor an offer to cover the tow truck cost. All in all, it was a costly, stressful experience, and we came out of it with a car that was worse than when it went in! This is an overpriced garage with poorly experienced mechanics.
