Record Store Day brought me to Half Price Books this past weekend, mainly because it coincided with selling all the books/games/music I Spring-cleaned/decluttered out of our house. We really lucked out as I found multiple records in my wish list, and my punk-rock teen found some rare finds with Green Day and Panic at the Disco (both of those were higher priced than I would have liked). Terrible Place to Sell Books - Avoid! If you're thinking about selling books to Half Price Books, DON'T waste your time! They offer insultingly low payouts, no matter the quality or value of your books. I recently brought in several thick, high-quality books and was given barely anything for them. The pricing process is completely opaque, with no explanation of how they determine value. To make things worse, customer service is awful. The employees seem uninterested and dismissive, acting as if they're doing you a favor by taking your books off your hands. There's no negotiation, no respect for sellers, and no reason to bring your books here unless you want to be ripped off. Save yourself the frustration--sell elsewhere or donate your books to people who will actually appreciate them! read more

I'm am absolutely disgusted that this is legal. Not because they sell books to people. But because they steal books from people. A cherished box of very expensive books ACCIDENTALLY was taken to HPB by a senile family member. The people working there know the value of books. I imagine, because when I went to get these books back they sure knew. As they accessed the Texas warehouse that supplies the stores and scams sellers. They said we'll he accepted our price $10. 00. And that's just an idiots luck, or do they have a responsibility? YES they have a responsibility and they are not a pawn shop. But they gave a senile family member 10 dollars for a box of books worth thousands. And when we tried to get them back they knew exactly which books they were and how quickly they sold. This is criminal activity under the disguise of helping people. read more

Not sure I'll ever buy a book for anywhere else again. I did a book purge at home and once I was finished reading some greats and not so greats I threw a decent sized box of books in the trunk of my car and thought to myself- totally taking these to half price books. Word on the street was they buy back all kinds of gems from books to comics to movies etc. Flash forward 2 months later (yes literally 2 months- I need to clean out my trunk out BADLY- it's on my current to do list)- today was the day. We were trying to escape Hamburg rush hour (every weekend Friday from about 5pm to Sunday I don't even know when) and we couldn't turn left so we went right at the stoplight coming out of Best Buy and I was like we could stop for me to take these books into half price. Off we went. We dropped off our books and they told us to walk around the store for a bit. Now, I want to say I've been here before and not living under a rock but it hit differently today. I found myself in the philosophy section, then social sciences, then fiction & back to philosophy before we were called. I wasn't finished looking but when I heard my name called for the second time- I thought well financially this is a good thing because we were waist deep in all kinds of goodness. On selling back books- I feel as though you could definitely get more monies selling elsewhere like Amazon or EBay- some would argue at the rate they gave us to just donate but we were there and I thought about all the patience I had to have selling textbooks (that cost much more than the few books I had mostly self help and romantic chick books to be honest) and decided to part ways with them. They helped me declutter our stand under our tv stand anyhow. With the newness they had though I was slightly surprised (I don't crease my books at all and only highlight or write notes in ones that are going right back on our shelves but anyways...) They truly had a great selection and lots of new books not just gently preowned. And like the name- they are literally half the price of what you find most anywhere. I could be in there for hours just looking and finding then looking again. This year I want to focus more on reading outside the box and challenging myself to ready things I normally wouldn't from different perspectives and after spending some time here today- I know exactly how I'm going to accomplish that on a budget. read more

Worst book store ever. They are so rude at the counter. Made me wait forever (30 mins+) just to sell like 2 books. One of the guys had an attitude so instead of selling my books for $1 there i left and I posted them on Facebook...got a bigger & fair price for them- a way better use of my time. read more

I've never tried to sell any books back to them as I have a bookshelf I store them on or just give them away after reading but I've heard they don't offer very much so I would either just donate them or sell them online... but as far as purchasing goes 97% of the time you are going to find what you are looking for and something you wasn't lol!! read more

FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING HOLY DO NOT SELL YOUR STUFF HERE. They have a computer that they scan every item into, and the computer tells them what to pay. If you ask them what they paid for an individual item they'll say "Oh, it's a lot offer." This is a lie. They have an itemized list right in front of them that they don't want you to see. Why? Because a lot of what you brought in went into the computer for zero dollars. That's right, they will pay you zero dollars for merchandise they intend to sell. And you know they intend to sell it, because they're never like "Oh, we can't pay anything for these items, would you like them back?" No, they hope you'll just take the offer so they can slap a price tag on merchandise that was free for them. They deliberately withhold information about what they pay for individual items and deceive customers by telling them it's not itemized when it is. In my book that's theft by deception. Also the "store manager" here needs to wash his clothes or take a bath or something. He looks and smells like a hobo. read more

Love this book store. It's always a little hit-or-miss on whether or not they'll have something that you're looking for specifically, but when you're just browsing you tend to find a lot more than what you planned on. Reasonably priced with the exception of new books which are usually regular price. read more

I have to say, I love books. No, I LOVE books. I have been a fan of reading all of my life. I have worked in libraries. I have volunteered in school libraries. I own two Kindles. I love to read. So, needless to say, I have to visit Half Price Books when I travel to Lexington. I have since infected my oldest son in reading, so we occasionally make the 100 mile trip just to visit HPB. This HPB location was my first experience with the HPB franchise. I later discovered the other location in Lexington. This one is the larger one, but each one is unique enough to visit both. HPB is not just a used book store. It does have the best sellers, but it has much more. It has old books. It has collectible books. It has books that were popular but are currently not. It has vinyl records. It has dvd's and blu-rays. It has old table games. It has calendars, stationary, and journals. I just love coming here. I could spend hours, and have before. If you love books and anything to do with books, please, PLEASE visit these two locations. My next trip to Texas, I want to visit the flagship store, and when I do, you will know!! read more

I still enjoy coming here. I made two trips when I visited KY over the holidays--before and after Christmas, and was able to sample some holiday cookies and tea/coffee while waiting. I'd actually been cleaning out my closet so that I could find some stuff to get rid of...I took them 4 boxes of books, CDs, and computer software that was of zero use to me, and ended up getting about $50 for my troubles. Note: they accept any type of recorded media, but they're also gonna most likely give you $0.25 or $0.50 for any items like CDs, software, VHS tapes, vinyls, etc. Still a great place and will continue to give them my business whenever I make the trip back to KY. read more

This is a nice place to look for out of print books. They have an ever changing selection, because people sell their unwanted books, CD's, movies, etc. There is a very fast turn over of popular authors and titles. The have some very valuable books, too. It's amazing what I find there. There is even a section of language cd's. Oh, and some reference books. I would look, at the end of the semester, for books that I'd need the next semester. I probably should have put it in a tip; if you sell them an item, you get a coupon for a discounted price of a later purchase. I've thought about selling them a cheap book... for example 50 cents... to get a 10% off an expensive book. Maybe cheating, or just gaming the system. Anyway, I like the place. Sometimes I find what I'm looking for, I always find something that I want --- so be careful, you may spend money. But like I said, the selection is always changing. And if you don't pick it up, it may be gone when you change your mind and go back a couple of minutes later. It's happened to me. I missed out on a nice boxed set of Vonnegut. It was cheap, too. There is also another location in town, near Fayette Mall, off Tiverton. Enjoy, but be forewarned - - - It's addictive. read more

I love Half-Price Books. Whether you're selling books or buying them, there's something for everyone here. They also buy and sell DVDs, records, and CDs. They always offer complimentary drinks: coffee (including decaf), regular hot tea, green tea, and occasionally, hot chocolate. During the holidays, they have complimentary sugar cookies as well. Everyone gives great customer service as well. They have some new merchandise and books as well, such as hardcover books and calendars. There's a lot of holiday items to choose from; they're usually batched together in the front. Coming here is like going on a treasure hunt because you'll certainly find something you like. The only thing I dislike--and this is a significant issue with me--is that ever since the store was reorganized (and I believe this happened at the Tiverton Way store as well), romance novels are now shelved so high, no one can reach them. Romance novels are one of the top genres in fiction today; most of those who buy them are women, who are traditionally shorter. It's impossible to even properly gaze at the books on the top shelves, let alone peruse them and select some to purchase. I don't wish to ask for an employee to reach several for me to look at; it's just too inconvenient. I've never been in a book store that shelved items this high. I really hope they change it because those books won't sell if customers can't even see them to look at them. This problem is the only reason I'm giving four stars instead of five. read more

In the years since my initial review, I have grown less enamored with this place as things have changed. First of all, the prices are not as great as they used to be. Times were you could find a ton of stuff for 1/2 or less, but now there tends to be a lot of newer items that are not cheap at all. I never feel like I'm getting a huge deal like I used to. The inventory seems well picked-over by the time it makes it to the shelves, leaving hundreds of publisher cast-offs taking up space. Now that digital and streaming have really hit their stride, purchasing discs also seems like a waste of money, and most of the Blu-Ray sets are still upwards of $50. I will say that I still enjoy going to the clearance area and loading up a basket with $1 books that no one else seems to want. Whenever I go here nowadays (which isn't too often) I usually just head straight here and skip all the rest. It just isn't worth it anymore. read more

Oh how I wish a Half Priced Books would pop into existence in Atlanta. I have now visited one in Kentucky and Texas, so I know they must be somewhat common. I would frequent this place alll the time if it was here. Just because of the ever-changing book selection, and the fact that this place is pretty nifty. That being said, this place did not seem to have as much of a cooking section as the one in Texas. Nor did it have any of the books (or even anything at all by the authors) that I was looking for. I know it can't be helped sometimes, since it is a (sort of) used bookstore. The layout here was really very tidy, especially the common fiction section.They had a lot of books that had deals on them displayed on the tops of the shelves. I got "Schindler's List" for about $3, and found "Watchmen" in the graphic novel section for $10. So both cheaper than half price. I may not have found specific titles that I wanted, but at least I still found some good book deals! read more

I come here every time I get the chance, it is up there with Barnes and noble...without paying the big bucks. They have every popular book you'd want. Even have Japanese Manga, and a good selection too all in good condition. Comic books, movies, but I love seeing all the records. I've bought many books here, none which I regret except one book that just sucked but that wasn't half priced fault. Only warning...don't sell your books here. They don't pay squat even for hardback. Doesn't matter the condition. So sell elsewhere and then spend your money on the $1 books they always have decorating their shelves. read more

This place is awsome. They buy and sell used books, cds, dvds, and certain computer software. Since they are used, they are way cheaper than buying new. The only down side to this used concept is that you have to look for something multi times if it is a newer item or have them order it for you. The staff here always greets you with a smile and asks if you need help. Love this concept. read more

A very good used bookstore (and comic books, DVD's and CD's). If you like pulp novels, they have loads of cheap paperbacks to enjoy. They even sometimes have big bulk boxes of novels as a special bargain. They have a decent CD section, and a DVD selection which is as good as most other stores carrying DVD's (but with lower prices). The only downside is, that as a used bookstore with a constantly rotating selection of merchandise if there is a specific book or a very specific topic you are looking for you can't guarantee they will have it. Test prep books, yes. A GRE study guide, maybe not. Star Wars novels, definitely. A copy of Shadows of the Empire, maybe not. Comedy movies, loads of them. A copy of Stripes, don't count on it. They do buy used books, but it is at pennies on the dollar. If you've got books that are just taking up space it's a good place to make sure they'll get used by somebody else and get a few dollars for them, but you won't get rich selling them. If you're just there to browse around and find a book to read or see if you can find a nice book for your collection, it's definitely worth it however. read more

One of my favorite places for books! Decent selection and prices and people r helpful in finding items. We buy DVD, CBS and books alot here. It's not a great place to sell as you don't get alot for your books tho. Sections are laid out by category which is helpful. Just noticed today they had subcategories marked (such as Indian in the cookie section) which I found helpful. They also now have a frequent shopper card! Yeah! I wish we had one in NC! read more

LOVE THE STORE! Only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because they finally wised up & started doing their research on DVDs....seeing which were out of print & worth a big chunk of change. This is a good place to dump off books and items that nobody else will buy. I wouldn't take anything here if you think it's valuable at all, they pay very little but they will take just about any book or magazine you have lying around if donating to Goodwill for a tax deduction isn't your plan. I pretty much only come here when I have stuff that doesn't or won't sell on eBay or through other venues. They have a good selection of old gaming books if you're looking to fill out holes in a collection. The prices are high, however. They don't just carry books but movies, DVDs, music, comics, games, toys and the like as well as the usual book store additions of stationary, calendars and the like. A lot of what they buy does end up on the shelf but don't expect any bargains, as far as I can tell everything is cross checked against eBay or Amazon marketplace and priced accordingly. I've looked at a couple of items and they were priced at exactly the last sold price on eBay. read more

Do yourself a favor and just buy off amazon it will be a lot cheaper and you will actually have a better experience. I have spent a lot of money in this store and then when I wanted to clean out my stuff took it back and only got $50. I pay $30 for one book and got back $5. This place is a freaking ripoff. I see why bookstores are becoming a thing of the past. The employees are super rude to customers and they usually only have one register open so the lines are always back up. Again just get whatever you need from amazon, a library, or somewhere else because bookstores are a ripoff especially this second hand one. I thought Goodwill was awful. read more

This is a great place for browsing books, DVDs, VHS, CDs, vinyl, etc. You never know what you're going to find! We've bought and sold there (*the price paid for your books is not that great but it sure works if you have some unwanted books/comics,CDS, VHS, vinyl etc. that you no longer want - I wouldn't sell anything "rare" there, but for stuff you no longer need/want it makes for a nice credit towards whatever you buy). We always walk out of there with books, cds, and sometimes games and DVDS. It's also well organized and it's fun to sort through the bargain bins. Highly recommended. read more

I like half priced books. I visit here first before I go to other big name book stores to see if I can save some money. It has allowed me to purchase books I would have never bought normally and not so worried about buying something maybe I won't like and wasting my money. The staff here has always been nice and helpful. They don't always have what I'm looking for but they do have a lot of options. The also have CDs and other merchandise as well. The Half Priced Bookstores are the Gold Standard for collectors of all type of media and all genres. This one even had used board games from the 60's! I don't know if there's one in FL but I've been to them in TX, KY, and MO. Great selection and well trained employees who are helpful AND knowledgeable. If you see one, give it a visit! read more
