English is spoken very well there and you have the pleasure viewing a large aquarium behind the bar. It's one of the perfect places for a pleasant evening (either the start or the end of it). The prices in the first floor are moderate, maybe a little bit on the high side.

Review for a Friday to Saturday night:…read more Was busy. Coat check for about 2 euros, and its only because someone told me its a "jazz bar" that I realized there was jazz like music in the background. It is upstairs, has a decent fish tank behind the bartenders at the bar, and has every potential to be a cool smallish jazzy trendy bar, but falls sort. 1. Its not obvious to start meeting people here 2. The drinks didn't taste all that great. Bartenders make a big show to prepare them, but some of my friends didn't even want to finish their drinks. I didn't buy a drink here, so I can't tell you the price, but I was eating the peanuts (complimentary, if you dare) and tasting their drinks, and I wasn't impressed either. Note: Its also smoker friendly. So 2 stars because the drinks are not so great, and it didn't sell itself to me as a fun entertaining jazz place. And not posh enough to sit by one of the tables and just relax all chill to the environment. I would say take your money and go to Albertina Passage, its expensive but if that's what you're looking for, that's where you should go (not to be confused with Albertina, or with Passage. Lame I know, oh well). Cheers!

But if you can get yourself a good table you're golden. I can't say the food is outstanding but it's decent for how cheap it is and the fact that you're kind of in a Irish dive bar. There's lots to look at, lots to drink, so you'll be pretty well entertained. I'll be going back for the drinks for sure.

It's small and cosy with a nice atmosphere. The decor is really vintage with a cool display of bottles behind the bar. Their whiskey menu is pretty impressive! The reason I am giving it only 4 stars is because the place was completely understaffed. One waitress/barmaid was running the whole show even though we'd made a reservation for 12 people days in advance so they knew it was going to be busy. On top of that there were a lot of other people waiting for drinks and food as well.

There is a certain charm permeated by wifts of faded elegance that sets the Rote Bar apart from…read moreother late night music and drinking establishments. It is located upstairs in the Volks Theater of Vienna but has its own entrance which you'll know by of course the red lights. Red is everywhere in this locale (seats, tables, bar, stage) and when you add in the crystal chandeliers and a pair of lunette murals, you feel that you're sipping wine or drinking whiskey in one of the last active vestiges of Imperial Austria. Now for the music - well it is so varied you just have to know the performer(s) or indulge in discovery. Last night I was privileged to hear the immensely talented Austrian guitarist Martin Philadelphy who had just returned from an American tour. Hey with a name like Philadelphy of course I'm gonna go hear him play in person and he was well-worth the price of admission. Now if you don't like the music playing or want to continue the conversation you had started before the musicians took the stage, you can always move down the hall to the much lesser known little sister bar which I call the "White Bar." On the negative side, what I don't like is the sometimes costly cover charge to get in. There are tricks to get around that but that's another story. Also the opening times can vary depending on the duration of the theatre performance that evening so when arranging this as a place to meet people, you have to do a little research first. Hey but other than this, most major cities in the world would undoubtedly yearn to have a late-night destination like the Rote Bar among its drinking and music options ... but Vienna already has it!
