Walking down 13th Street, you might notice the flashing LED sign of the Halal Express Cart. The cart owners came from NYC less than 2 months ago bringing their street feed to Center City. Combo plates are the way to go. Lamb, chicken, falafel, shrimp, and fish are available until they close at 6pm or until they run out. I had the lamb and fish over rice for $6. The platter comes with some lettuce and tomato. And if you say yes, a squirt of white sauce and hot sauce. You should say yes. The lamb was in small pieces rather than the strips I prefer, but they had a nice grilled flavor. The fish (tilapia) was what really stood out. The quality of fish from a street cart could be questionable. But the meaty fillet (what she order? fish fillet?) did not taste the slightest bit funky. And I really liked the spicy tomato marinade. Underneath, the brown-yellow rice was not bland, but I talked to the cart guys and they hinted that if there was enough interest, they could serve biryani like the famous carts in NYC. So I suggest ordering that fish while making a biryani plea. Thanks.

Ahh Chicken and Rice, how you have eluded me in Philly. After popping my chicken and rice cherry on 53rd street in NYC one drunken night I've been getting the occasional cravings for some halal chicken and rice here at home. I finally found one in the city worth writing over. There wasn't much of a line since it was after lunch on a rainy day, but the guys working there were nice and had a clean cart. For 5 bucks I got myself a solid sized plate with a can of Sunkist, THE BEST ORANGE SODA. none of that Orange Crush, Fanta bullshit. The rice itself tasted like the generic kind of halal cart rice served everywhere but where this cart has a noticeable difference is the chicken. Even more juicy and tender than the famed cart in Midtown NYC with tangy creamy white sauce and hot sauce mixed on. This chicken and rice is better than the one in NY. Yeah I said it Notes: Unlike the one in NYC, these guys mixed the hotsauce for me. Wasn't sure if I could do it myself, didn't try, didn't care, hungry The hotsauce they used wasn't nearly as hot as the one in NYC, slightly disappointed No 30+ ppl wait = Bonus.

The combo over salad and rice was tasty and had nice variety

Halal Gyro Express is a good Middle Eastern food stall in a sea of good Middle Eastern food stalls. Nothing particularly makes it stand out... but the food here is still tasty and enjoyable. I'd recommend the combo, if you want to enjoy a little bit of everything. Also, note that they only accept cash, so come prepared.

Go easy on the hot sauce your first time ordering. Fast, efficient and typically $5. (a true bargain in Center City)

As close to a good NYC halal cart as you'll find in Philadelphia.

The chicken and rice bowl was so delicious. The spicy chicken paired with the smoothness of the yogurt sauce. I'm in heaven and all for $5

It's reasonably priced - around $4 for a breakfast sandwich, and $6-7 for lunch items (pulled pork or meatball sandwiches, mango habanero chicken, etc). I approached the cart wanting a breakfast sandwich, but the guy told me they were out of eggs... so I then asked for a pulled pork sandwich, but they were out of that too! I decided to go with the mango habanero chicken, which was a rice platter that had chicken topped with mango habanero sauce, corn, peas, and bits of carrot and green beans. It was really delicious but a bit too spicy for me... luckily the guy offered me a free drink with my meal since he felt bad about being out of the things I wanted. I'd recommend it as a good place to grab lunch. Hopefully I will be able to try their out-of-stock items sometime! The quality of the food is that of a restaurant and not a lunch cart at all. The pulled pork tasted like it came right out of a Memphis BBQ restaurant. The guy working the truck told me he was also the owner and that he makes the food fresh everyday. Everything was under $10 so it was great to grab and go to bring back to the office. My only complaint was that he didn't have a soft pretzel to go perfectly with my sweet pulled pork sandwich. I am definitely making this a regular lunch spot for me and my co-workers in the city.
