For a $45 women's haircut that's all-inclusive (shampoo, cut, blow-dry/style), I REAAALLLY wanted to love this place... but I left disappointed because my hairdresser didn't even ask me what style or length I wanted, she just started parting & cutting my hair! I had to interrupt her & initiate the conversation about what style I wanted & specify how much length I wanted cut. In the end, it didn't really matter because she didn't incorporate anything I asked for. I asked for long layers which I didn't get. I also asked that she cut 2-3 inches & she took off twice of that. Once I got home & acclimated to my new haircut that's much shorter than I wanted, the style eventually *grew* on me. It's not a bad haircut, it's cute but not what I communicated. Language barrier could've been a factor here but I showed her a picture to bypass that. Would I come back? Probably but I'll be sure to ask for a different hairstylist. read more

I don' know but man are they stubborn. I went in to get my haircut in a specific way and the lady cutting my hair refused to cut it that way. I should've just left themn but she already placed me in the chair with all the gears so I kept asking her that it's okay to cut it shorter. Her reasons started that the hairstyle I am asking for does not suit my rounded face. Then she said since I am already over weight it will make me look more overweight. Then she said the hairstyle is more for white people with light hair. Then she said the hairstyle was for people who want to look a bit slutty. Okay, some hairstyle suit rounded face more than others. All I wanted was a shoulder length hair where the back was shorter and the front was a bit longer! Not sure why she had to mention my effin weight and all those accusations but I almost blew up there. There is no such thing as white people hairstyle. I really wanted to just jump off and leave. But she was the one with scissors in the hand so man did I learn patience. I wanted to give a 1 start but gave 2 because it was still a decent haircut. Not close to what I asked for but she still did her best to give a good cut. It suits my "rounded face" but still not WHY I grew my hair for a year and paid $40 for. The owner Madam Go is a very friendly professional stylist. She has so much patience to listen to your needs and she cuts my hair with so much care! I came here and I am so happy I did! I know everyone has a gut retching feeling (well us girls at least) when they go to a new hair salon. Questions and comments like, "what if this lady does not know what she is doing?" or "Ah!!! What if I hate it? I do not want to be rude by crying in front of the stylist..." But, do not worry when you come here. They are so great at what they do. My hubby and I both received a cut. We both loved the end result so much. I literally cut a whole foot of hair and I was so scared at first. Being that I have been to so many places that have no idea what they are doing. But, OMG I was beyond pleased with my haircut. My cut is stylish and leveled, I have been receiving so many complements about my hair. This is now my go to spot. For my hubby's and my hair cut we paid about 80 bucks without the tip. I personally didn't get my haircut here but I came with other people. Overall service is good. However j would say the knowledge of the hair stylist on hair treatment recommendation was little lacking. They said that one of the product does not have a shampoo and when we came to the front, receptionist said something completely different. I was really annoyed that they turned off their air conditioning in the middle of June and I had to ask for them to turn it back on. I was also really annoyed that I suggested three times that they put me in a robe... and the owner denied me only to drench my $300 dress in my wet hair. I was also annoyed that I told her she could do whatever with my hair as long as she gave it more bounce, but she kept asking me for specifics. So I ended up just tell her, "just a trim." I was annoyed that the cost was $45 opposed to the many places nearby that cost $35. However, the cut itself is phenomenal so I kind of can't complain. I honestly got so mad for the poor service that I gave this place one star. But after a couple showers, I realized she gave me the life and bounce I was looking for. I didn't want to cut my hair shorter just wanted to add layers and some flair because it's been about 1 shameless year since my last hair cut.. I told my haircutter to just do what she thought would look good on me. Definitely felt fresher and not pressured to upkeep my cut which works great for me. After reading all of the reviews here I decided I'd take a chance and try this salon. I had my last haircut over a year before in California by someone totally awesome and I'd been afraid to go to anyone else, but my hair was looking absolutely horrid so I had to do something. I went in and asked for Christina, based on all the good reviews here - but my luck was that she wasn't working that day. (Yes, I should have called first - I know) A very nice lady was there named Ko who said she would be happy to cut my hair. Thinking again about all the great reviews, even though I hadn't seen any for "Ko" I figured how bad could it be. Worst case I'd just ask for a trim to cut off all of the split ends I had acquired from not cutting my hair for so long, I'd keep every other part of it the same and I'd be on my way (or so I thought) I even brought photos of the way my hair was supposed to look and had looked almost a year ago for reference. Ko quickly glanced over at the photos, but wasn't interested in seeing them. She acted as if she knew exactly what I wanted. I have very very fine hair and I explained that I did want it graduated in the front (as it had been) but that I definitely could NOT have layers of any kind as my hair is far too thin for that. I asked for her to just cut off the damaged ends and try to shape it back how it had been. Ko nodded in acknowledgement. Guess what I got? - The most layers of my life and the craziest haircut I've ever seen. Honestly the back looked like I had gum stuck in my hair and I decided to cut it out myself at random. Maybe the cut would have worked on short hair and would have been modern and edgy, but on long hair (mine had been to the middle of my back) the uneven lengths all over the place at random just looked a mess, especially with my hair type. The underlying pieces weren't even all the same length. When friends saw me afterwards they asked what had happened. No one could believe how my hair looked (unfortunately, not in a good way). I gave it 2 instead of 1 star because Ko spent a long time and seemed to honestly care about what she was doing. It was just that her vision was definitely not the same as mine. I'm not sure she understood English all that well - as she didn't talk to me throughout the process. I wish she had taken time to look at the photos because then I don't think there would have been so much of a mix-up. I would have asked her to fix it, but to even it out at the time would have created a much much shorter haircut than what I was ready for and I also wasn't sure she would understand my request. This happened in November - I've worn it up every day since then - and now (Feb) I'm finally where the shorter layers are not so short that I can have someone else at a place yet to be found try to help me even this out so that I can try to wear it down again. Lesson learned... call first and make sure you can see the actual person that was recommended. read more

I've been going to this place for the past decade and I must say that it has been a great privilege to be part of it. The store owner who I call won jang nim is very professional and courteous whenever I go there for a haircut. I always make an appointment since Saturdays are usually busy. However, I noticed that she's away for about half of the year so I began getting a haircut from Nina Recently. True I've tried others as well but Nina was very delicate and considerate when she cut my hair for the first time. I try to keep the same hair style and Nina did a great job with minimum instructions. It's not easy to establish a regular patronage unless the employees commit themselves to do their best for their customers. read more

I really enjoy this place. I first went for my husband, he's Hispanic has very thick, straight and manageable hair, very Asian like so we figured we'd try a Korean hair salon since he's into their edgy hair styles. Jessica worked her magic on him and his haircut turned out better than all three images we brought in. I decided to give her a try with my own hair. I am very picky about where I cut my hair because I have thin, frizzy, wavy and overall unmanageable hard to style hair. Jessica worked wonders though. She gave me a new look that I was hoping for, made my hair look more voluminous and healthy and she didn't even use any product to blow dry and it still came out great! Right after I got it cut and styled I went to the gym and sweat my ass off and the style still stayed put the next day! Jessica is great and a real artist with her scissors. Be sure to come in with pictures and use hand gestures if you don't know Korean. PS the prices are very fair too, I had medium length hair and charged $45, and my husband with short hair, $25. Nina is back! Woot woot! I couldn't believe after reading the review that she was gone, I still called to make an appointment with Nina and she happened to have been back for a month now. I was so glad! I needed to have a very short hair cut but did not dare to have it done by just anyone. So I searched around and couldn't seem to find anyone I would be comfortable with. I saw Nina a couple years ago, then I found a much cheaper place that can do simple trimming. But, that place now has raised their prices and I could barely communicate with the hairstylist. I saw Nina for my short hair cut and showed her picture of what I wanted. She then gave suggestions and I just agreed with them. She did an awesome job! Be aware English is not their first language so when making an appt you may have to repeat yourself a couple times - I don't care about that as they are a Korean place but just a note if you didn't know. They are always really nice and accommodating, hair cuts are priced fairly at $45, which includes shampoo and blow dry. Nina is the only one I've gotten to do my hair and she is amazing. When I went in the first time I took a photo of how I wanted me hair. Christina did not offer the photo back to me and I didn't ask for it. I went back exactly eight weeks later and asked her to just clean it up. Her English is better than others in the place, but she and I apparently were not communicating well at all. She gave me a new haircut that I kind of hated and I asked her to fix before I left. She did not show me the back of my head which I took to be a very bad sign. Now it is time for me to get my haircut again and I can't decide if I should go back to her with the photo (thankfully I found it on the internet and saved it to my computer) or try to find a new place. Okay, I don't know what everyone is talking about. This place sucks. I got my hair cut there and the butcherred it. This is not a high quality hair joint. you know that they aren't "hip" with the latest trends when you look around and most of the people there are old korean ladies getting perms. Honestly, I'm used to getting my hair cut at hair salons in korea or their american extensions. In korea I used to go to Satin inside the Coex mall. the guy who cut my hair could get it looking like a korean actor in no time flat. Same with the lady at Kim Sun Young here in annandale (who unfortunately is no longer there)... she worked at the Cheong Dam Dong location back in Seoul, which is like working in a beverly hills salon when translated to the US. she had some serious skills. But alas, since her departure, I've had my hair butchered by two people. The first was the new guy at kim sun young. the second was here. I must admit, the lady at Hairtown was still better than the beanie wearing artsy looking new guy at kim sun young. But she is still not what all the chicks here keep raving about. I'm starting to think that the reviewers have never gotten a truly awesome Korean style haircut... What the heck ya'll? I went here because of a friends suggestion and after looking at the reviews here. What's the take away? Well, if you're a girl, then go ahead... they seem to please the locals. This place is great for getting anything done to your hair. They're consistently good/skilled. However, they are definitely pricey which is why I refuse to give them 5 stars. I've never been unhappy with my hair, but I was always unhappy with the size of the hole in my pocket they left me with. Came here last minute after an appointment with Kim Sun Young's hair salon flopped. I called hair town and asked if they could take walk ins on a Saturday (called a few places and they all said no) and they happily told me come in about 20 minutes. Service was great from the moment we walked in, the front desk lady took our coats and hung them up, gave us a locker to put our things in, and they took both me and my boyfriend without appointments. That is about as good as the review will be. Our appointments took WAY too long. My boyfriend's haircut took over 40 minutes and my haircut took over 60 minutes. My boyfriend showed the haircutter (the owner) what kind of hair he wanted with a picture. It did not look anything like the picture. It was way shorter than what he wanted and he came out very unhappy. It wasn't cheap either. 30 dollars for a guy's haircut is outrageous. He says it usually takes 20 minutes, 30 minutes tops to cut his hair anywhere else and she took way too long. I also had my haircut after he did his. My appointment took over an hour. She started cutting my hair and then said that because my hair was only dry in some parts, she would have to see my hair completely dry and completely straightened in order to make sure it looked okay. So, she left in the middle of my appointment (to eat lunch) and another lady came and stick straightened my hair for 30 minutes, before the haircutter came back to "touch up" the rest of my hair for another 15 minutes. I have NEVER been to a haircuttery where they told me that my hair had to be straightened to perfection before being able to tell where more hair needed to be cut. I think she just said that so she could go eat lunch. My hair was also way shorter than what I had asked for. Overall, both of us came out not feeling too happy about our haircuts for which we paid 75 dollars plus tip for. We were there for nearly 2 hours. We will not be coming back. We're going back to Kim Sun Young's Hair Salon. read more

Found this place on Yelp and wanted to try a new place for my hair, so I called and made an appointment for a men's haircut. When I went in for the cut, the "designer" Sarah attacked (the best way I can put it) my head with clippers so hard that I found bloody spots in my hair from the sheer pressure she applied with every pass. She was careless in cutting my hair. She let me walk out of the place with my hair looking like I just woke up from a nap. The cut looks disastrous at best -- so bad that my roommate actually took the time to tell me how bad it is. Maybe she didn't like me. Maybe I wronged her somehow (though I wouldn't know how). I went here based on reading Yelp reviews, and I must agree with some of the Yelpers - it's a pretty decent place to get a hair cut. I went to Nina, and I brought a picture with me. [This is when my magic straight was growing out, so the new hair (course, thick, and crazy) didn't make styling it any easier.] She noticed the new hair and asked further questions: what I wanted, how I styled, and other related questions. She took her time and made sure that throughout the process, I was okay with what she was doing. She was meticulous and thoughtful, and ultimately, I left with the haircut that I wanted. I love Christina! This is by far the best haircut I ever received. Last time I went to Kim Sun Young and they tried to convince me to get a straight perm due to my slightly wavy hair for the hair cut I wanted. I said no to the perm and received an average hair cut. But Christina gave me the look I wanted without having to straighten my hair. I told her I wanted to have the K-pop style and she gave it. I loved how meticulous she was about my hair. Her work is a work of art, she takes in every detail to perfect my look. I highly recommend her. Just make sure to call ahead incase it's her day off. read more

I've been here twice and twice I was not happy. First time I came out the store looking like a korean ajumma. Second time I came out looking like a boy. When I left looking like a boy, my hair was so thin it was ridiculous. I absolutely looked horrendous. I had no other choice but to call up another salon to come in IMMEDIATELY to fix what Hair Town did. -.- That's two cuts in 2 hours. I read somewhere that long hair should be 1.) healthy, 2.) not too long for your age, and 3.) not be used to cover up your weight. Well, my long hair was thin and damaged, from the back my hair my hair made me look young but from the front I had a case of old-face, and I definitely wasn't fooling anyone about my weight. It was time to cut my hair. I made an appointment with Christina after reading Mel and Helena's review. The shampoo chairs are cool but the head massage is even better! I explained to Christina that I wanted to cut my hair short but didn't know how short I could go without making my face look even fatter (I have a ginormous face--wide cheekbones, huge forehead, wide jaw, ugh) and she suggested a cut a little past my shoulders. I was a little disappointed since I wanted to cut my hair pretty short but more relieved than anything since above my shoulders might've been too dramatic for me. She didn't spend an hour on my hair, it was more like 30 minutes. It was a pretty simple cut, not much precision involved, and it cost $40. Not sure what was different about my haircut from Mel and Helena's that made mine cost more...but I almost expected to get charged more since I don't speak Korean very well. It doesn't matter because $40 is cheap and the naive side of me wants to think the prices simply went up recently. Anyway, my fault for not asking, but I won't bring up a $5 difference. I wouldn't mind coming back here. I was deciding between Salon Mint and this place, and I chose Hair Town because of the good (although few) reviews and the lower price, plus it's closer to me. I can definitely see myself coming back here, but it wasn't good enough to rule out a visit to Salon Mint in the future. read more

I had my hair butchered by someone else (a diff. salon) more than 6 months ago....thank goodness I finally came back to VA for a visit this summer, and Christina saved my hair once again with an amazing haircut. I have fairly thin hair but she gave me these awesome layers that give me volume with very little effort on my part...now my hair actually has some shape and movement to it. My mom introduced me to this salon, and I only have trusted Christina () ever since my first time. I've had horrendous hair appointments in the past that have wrecked my shape or damaged my hair (hair coloring). I haven't gotten my hair dyed here yet but I hope to soon. Christina trims my hair wonderfully then styles it to make it look way better than my daily look. It's been about 4-5 years I think since I starting coming to Hair Town 8858. I don't get my hair cut regularly, but I will gladly drive 30-40min for this salon! The other salonists are also very nice and welcoming (and also rock their own nice hairstyles ). This may be the norm for many other salons but I also really look forward to the shampoo part--the amazing scent of the shampoo and the relaxing mini head massage. After several so-so haircuts in northern Va and MD, I have finally found my gem. Nina cut my hair and gave me a perm for $110 (I have really short hair so that's probably why it was so cheap). I wanted a very loose natural wave perm. And she did just that. I LOVE my hair! It's been a very long time since I've been so thrilled about my hair without regretting it two days later. She did everything I asked for. It just stinks that I have to use my broken korean to communicate with her. But I have seen other non Koreans in there so I'm sure they speak some English. read more

Christina is a very honest and skilled hair dresser. She did wonderful job with my magic volume hair perm. My hair got damaged from other Korean hair salon, but she saved my hair. Her price is reasonable. She is the one of the best Korean hairdresser I met in USA. I experienced my magic straight perm(Japanese straight perm) close to 20 years, and I know who is doing good or bad when they apply the chemicals. I moved to FL, but I am considering to flight out to VA to do my hair with Christina. I don't find a hairdresser like Christina in Fl yet. My hair miss Christina's magic touch. read more
