Laya gave me the best haircut I've ever had. There were steps: wash, cut, dry (her assist did this with no tools and was grabbing at my scalp for an eternity which was getting to be overstimulating and upsetting), unexpectedly Laya checked my hair and cut the dry ends sticking out of the hair texture making it look very smooth, and then she did some curls. I would highly recommend, but I think that the communication can be improved especially given that this is not a normal wash, cut-dry-style haircut, the customer should be aware of this during their first visit so they know what to expect. It was an emotional rollercoaster for me not knowing why my hair wasn't being styled during the first drying process, the (many) lights were so bright, and her assist was rough and not very friendly, however I was very pleased with the result and would come back. Toronto is not a very friendly city, but the services are better quality and I think that places like this can stand out by being more friendly. read more

Easy to call ahead and book an appointment in the middle of the day. The salon is clean, with staff wearing disposable masks. Got a wash, cut and dry, and stylist was done within 35 minutes. Happy with my new look and with the little scalp massage during the wash. The only thing, though, is that this place is a bit pricey; it cost $90 with the 15% tip so be ready to drop a bit more than you would at similar places. read more

Went to this place because it was close by. It looked clean in the pictures and the photos look nice. They did have to work a bit harder because I had more knots in my hair. I did not appreciate them making a face while detangling my hair and also saying that my hair is so much better than it was now that it is straight. I think the end result looked nice and shiny and it did last however I think they burnt my hair as it had a bad smell later on and parts of my curl did not return. Thanks to Yin I look like a kpop sensation everytime I step out of this salon. I'm someone who likes to have different hairstyle every few months and yin has been really helpful in finding ways to mix it up. If you check the pictures you'll find I had a bowl haircut, a perm, a two block haircut and various brown dyes and bleaches in the past year. I'm particularly impressed in my recent experience because I have not had a bleach or dye job happen so fast and consistent (it was a 30 min bleach, though dying ads another 20 I guess). The back story is years ago when I had long hair and also poor, I would give myself an auburn or ash blonde box dye every month or so. Eventually my hair was always coppery or orangey. When I got lowlights bleached at university my hair would be a gradient of orange and platinum. This time around when I mentioned I wanted a full head of ash blonde Yin recommended a bleach before dying it and she was right. She was also careful not to have the bleach touch my scalp. I was also very surprised my hair didn't come out in orangey gradients. She told me she added a blue toner. The bleach, dye and cut is probably one of my more expensive hair endeavours but totally worth it! read more

*more of a 3.5 stars* I booked an appointment with Hair District online for bleach + dye, and I worked mostly with Patricia on my hair. They cycled me through their other stylists- Mana and Kelly- and they were all very friendly individuals. I sat there for 5 hours to dye my hair, and they seemed to have a lot of clients walking in and out of the door- always a good sign! We had to bleach, tone, and then dye my hair. In-between there was frequent hair rinses and tea drinking. They have a TV that displays Chinese variety shows, Netflix series or youtube clips. The small talk was pretty good and not awkward, which I appreciate. I had a consultation with Patricia on the hair color, and we decided to do a purple balayage. It ended up looking reaaaaally subtle on my super dark brown hair, and it was red. Very red. They said it looked 'grape-colored' but it's absolutely red. The effect was still really pretty, just not what I was hoping for. I didn't wash my hair afterwards but I immediately started sprouting split ends from all strands of my hair. (I've never had split ends before and it was just everywhere now.) The total came to $280 for my hair bleaching/dyeing, and I also bought a serum for my dyed ends. They gave me a beautiful blowout, and my hair has never felt so smooth and tangle-free! I saw some other girls leave the salon with wonderful curls. The service is definitely 5 stars but the outcome of my hair color + the state of my hair itself was rather disappointing. It might be better if you come here for haircuts as opposed to hair dye. I really wanted to love this place because of the reviews and wanting to find my forever hair place in Toronto. The gentleman was nice, but I felt rushed and the service left something to be desired. I had made an appointment online to get my hair coloured and I assumed that included a cut, but I was wrong. He told me he wouldn't have time to cut my hair, but that I could come back another day so I just got it coloured. I used to go to very high energy salons, but with age and the hectic life of the City, I prefer the more quiet one-on-one experiences: Patricia at Hair District (Bay) has not let me down. About me: -The days and times I go are not usually the rush hour or high peak times so my perspective is from someone who goes on a Tuesday or Sunday, between 2pm-5pm. -My hair is long, dark natural colour, thin and wavy. No colouring, no perms and untouched. -I am in the age group of 35+ -I do not like to chat up a storm when my hair is getting done. Light conversation preferred. -I am originally from a fashion oriented city. Usually, in the past, I would say, what I am looking for, discuss possible cuts and then let the stylist 'do what they do' without having to ask sooooo many questions. I don't want the stylist asking 'do you want this, or do you want that'. That, for me personally, should be done at the beginning and the rest is left to be experienced, notwithstanding a few of my own questions in between. My experience: My first time has been consistent with every time I go. -There are days I made appointments and other times I walked in. Given that I go during off peak hours, either she takes me right away or I wait an hour. Being downtown, there is so much to do. -I am greeted and shown which chair to sit in. If my hair is tied up, it is taken down and looked at. She examines the direction it grows, the feel of it and looks at the shape of my face. I let her know what I am looking for, she opines on whether she thinks it may suit me or not. After coming up with what is mutual, we then proceed. -She brings a cape/robe to put on and leads me to the place to lie back and have my hair washed. -Wash is thorough, and usually done twice followed by conditioning. During the conditioning phase, she performs a scalp massage. Not too hard, but enough for me to want to fall asleep. Following the wash, she leads me to the chair. -My hair is first towel dried thoroughly. She then uses a bone comb to comb through all the hair. She then sections out the hair and begins the phase of blow drying and styling. -Hair drying is not blazing hot; it should not be. She uses the right temperature, speed and method to ensure that they hair strand is dried and styled accordingly without adding extra damage. -I used to bring my own brushes to previous salons, but she has the right tools to use. I always glance before the process and they are thoroughly cleaned before using on anyone else's hair. -I do not usually want or need any products. But for special occasions (twice already) she did so. She used light weight products as to not weigh down my hair. I explained the curls I wanted and she did just that. First put in rollers for body, dried via hair dryer and then styled, adding extra curls with a curling iron. She then used a light spray to hold it in place. -Once the hair is complete, she inspects it thoroughly and then once she feels satisfied, she takes the larger mirror to show me the back. At the end, is when I 'chat'. I usually pay and make my way. For me, Patricia's style, demeanour and skills suit me perfectly. Also, I never go at high peak times. If you have similar traits, then I highly recommend Patricia for your hair. read more

My hair had lost all body and all my layers had grown out. So naturally I tracked Yin down at the bay location of Hair District (she's back from her trip yay!). As usual, she did not disappoint. I told her exactly what I wanted (layers in the front, layers in the back, layers everywhereee without losing the length) and she delivered. I booked an appointment at the Hair District for a shampoo/blow dry/styling so I could have my hair curled before a wedding. I noticed another reviewer mentioned how well they seem to curl other client's hair and the salon was close to where I was staying so I figured it was a good choice. My hair was styled by Clement. After the shampoo and while blow drying, there was a small knot in my hair. Instead of grabbing a comb to get it out, he used the round brush already in his hand and ripped the hair right out which I did not totally appreciate. Other than asking if I wanted my hair curled with a round brush or with a hot curling iron, he didn't bother asking what type of curls I wanted. In addition, he started from the very back of my head so I really had no idea what it was looking like until he got to the front. The curls were very tight which was exactly what I hadn't wanted. I thought about asking to break them up a little but didn't bother in case he didn't know how to do this and made it worse. I informed him when I first sat down that I was having my hair done for a wedding and asked that he please use lots of hair spray to make sure it would stay in for most of the evening. Well I'm glad I didn't say anything to him about the tight curls because within 2 hours, nearly everything had fallen out. When I paid at the cash I was told it was $40 + tax, however when I made the appointment (and I told them the length of my hair - it's not very long) they told me it would be $35. Overall, did not enjoy my experience here. Paid $45 plus tip to have my hair curled for what barely lasted an hour or two. read more

I'd be okay with this if it was a quick and cheap haircut but they charge $60 for it - more expensive than Seefu or N15, where they spend double the time cutting your hair with double the effort. I went to Hair District because I was going to a party and I needed a haircut as well. The first impression that I got when I went inside Hair District is that it's clean, tidy, and modern. The owner, Jennifer greeted me and helped me with my jacket and put on a robe for me. Then I was lead to go wash my hair. I was surprised to get a scalp massage. It was definitely a bonus. Throughout my haircut, I had some small talks with Jennifer. She was very professional and she told me that she doesn't like to talk too much unless the client wants to. I didn't quite know how I wanted to style my hair after my haircut so I told Jennifer just do whatever she thinks will look good on me. I really liked how Jennifer decided to do my hair. I have been having Patricia cutting my hair for over 2 years now, she's definitely one of the best you can find in the area. I used to go to different places to cut my hair every once in a while, but I have not had anyone else cut my hair since randomly walk into this place 2 years ago because Patricia is very reliable and does a good job. She's easy to communicate with, gives good recommendations for styling. Not all stylists know how to deal with my hair because they are straight and very firm, luckily it's not a problem here. I like the place for being clean and tidy, I definitely love the scalp massage when they wash your hair, and I am very impressed with how flexible it is to book appointments with them. Sometimes I need last minute hair cut before I give a presentation at work, or I get too busy and can't finish work until very late but need a hair cut, but I can always get it done at this place, because they open till very late and have flexible hours. Yin always makes sure you get exactly what you want and she remembers what you wanted last time so each visit is very seamless. The shampoo and scalp massages are great. I went to Hair District for a cut with David. As mentioned in other reviews the head massage during shampooing was suuuuper relaxing and set a nice tone for the appointment. We were also able to have a friendly conversation (not pushy, superficial or awkward in any way). We started to talk about colour and he showed me his profile of balayage clients, which is something I had been interested in getting done. The colours were fantastic and he said that he was already brainstorming ideas of how he would like to colour my hair. I made an appointment the next week to get the colouring done. During this second appointment David was able to answer my many questions about the colouring process (I was in a curious mood I guess, and he seemed happy to share his knowledge). He took his time and was meticulous during every step of the process. Balayage of course takes several hours but the time passed easily with more good conversation, a movie on in the background and the relaxing atmosphere of the salon. All of the staff were professional with their clients and each other, and seemed to work well together. As others have mentioned the salon is very clean, bright and well maintained. I would encourage anyone interested in having a cut or colour done to see David. I expect that his client list will grow quickly as word gets out of his superior level of service and abilities. Yin has been my hair dresser for 8-9 years! She is very skillful and always gives excellent advice on what type of styles suits my look. And she would modify the style suits me the best! I would give this salon zero stars if possible. I had an event to attend the day I went in and booked a simple wash and style so my hair would look nice for the evening. As my normal hair dresser wasn't available because it was a Sunday, and this place had decent reviews I figured I would give it a try. After all, a wash and style is pretty basic so I figured how bad could they mess it up? I told him I wanted lots of volume and some curls. Things started off okay but after an hour and a half (for a wash and style!!!!!) and 3 passes of the flat iron followed by numerous attempts with the curling iron, my hair was flat, messy, heat damaged and looked absolutely horrendous, and I was nearly in tears at how bad it was. I literally put it in a pony tail when he finished because it was so bad. My hair is virgin, healthy and fine (not difficult at all to style), and I work in the hair and beauty industry which means I've had countless stylists at salons all over Toronto -- including juniors in beauty school -- do various cuts and/or styles on my hair all with beautiful results. I have never, ever in my whole career had a negative experience with any Hairdresser in the GTA. But this was beyond brutal. When he took me to the counter to pay I said to him "do you genuinely think this looks good?!" And he actually said "no". He offered to wash my hair and do it again but seeing as I had already been there for 1.5 hours, and had a makeup appointment to get to I told him he wasn't going over my hair again and again with the same iron. He took 10% off the bill for my dissatisfaction but looking back I should have refused to pay since he didn't offer the service I had requested. This is a terrible salon and clearly the stylists there, or at least the one that did my hair, needs to go back to beauty school. read more

I showed up right at 10 when they open, and the stylist Yin took me right away even though I didn't have an appointment. She shampooed my hair and give me a scalp massage which was a pleasant surprise. And then she began cutting, very thorough and really she was a perfectionist. Went for full colour today. At first the colour turned out not to be something I expected. The staff redid the colour all over again and fixed the problem. Everyone was super friendly and patient. Honestly I'm pretty thrilled. I am not from Toronto but desperately needed my hair done. Literally every salon I've been to, it's like they're too scared to do my hair blonde, so they highlight but leave a ton of brown in. I am of European descent and have sort of ashy-blonde/brown hair. Anne was my stylist and while she was doing my hair asked "you weren't afraid to go to an Asian salon?" which was funny because I had no idea! But she said she has done blonde a lot before. She toned my hair to make my base color lighter, and also gave me a ton of platinum highlights. My appointment was at 6:30 pm and the salon closes at 9, but Anne took her time and actually ended up doing my hair until about 9:30, but she didn't rush whatsoever. I am so happy with my hair! I thought it was expensive ($310 after tip) but from what I could tell, everywhere in Toronto seems insanely expensive. I am so happy with my service and whenever I'm in Toronto I will be coming here. read more
