There is a snack stand, offering ice cream, nachos, and other treats, as well as beach equipment rentals. The sand is soft and visitors will enjoy spreading out on the expansive beach. The water is clear and features a sandy bottom. Just north of the snack stand is The Deck, the preeminent dining establishment in this area of Muskegon. The establishment features al fresco dining and stunning views of Lake Michigan. There are swings and other fun view points. If you're in Mitten, Pere Marquette is worth the drive. You simply cannot beat Lake Michigan's splendor.

The beach was completely empty when we arrived around 11 am and stayed pretty quiet the whole time. Parking at the beach is $20, which I thought was incredibly expensive, but it's good for the whole day. I'm used to parking for free at state parks since I have a recreation pass. It was a bit windy, but not chilly - although the water was freezing. I personally enjoy an overcast day at the beach, so we packed a picnic and some chairs and just sat and read for a bit. The beach is large, with lots of room to spread out. There's a nice smaller playground, a snack bar with ice cream and hot food, a little store for beach essentials like sunscreen, and super clean bathrooms. The restroom I used was a huge, single stall room with a bench- really nice for changing and probably great if you have little kids. I was impressed by how clean the bathroom was. We walked to the pier and checked out the lighthouse, which was a nice little walk. The Deck is right on the beach and is a great spot for live music, drinks, and food. I'd be curious to see this beach in the peak season - I'm sure it probably gets pretty busy.

The visitor center is a nice surprise, they've got a little nature center inside with live animals, saw a turtle and some fish in there, and the kids were obsessed. Nothing crazy or overdone but just enough to keep them entertained and learning a bit about the dunes before you head out. Then you hit the stairs up to the top and whew, worth every step. The view of the water and the dunes from up there is gorgeous. Staff around the park were friendly and helpful too, made the whole visit easy.

DO NOT RENT CABIN…read more We've rented the cabin for two years now and have been disappointed with the staff and strict rules both times. The first year the cabin was rustic but fine. The second year was abysmal. The cabin was infiltrated with mice, the shower did not drain or get hot, and the propane was empty. The rangers (Rick especially) have a superiority complex and think their word is the law. It doesn't help that they all say different things, causing confusion among the campsite.

Water and electricity are available at the camp sites! Each of our sites had a picnic table. The showers had warm water (not hot) and there were two shower stalls at the bathroom we were near. Bathrooms get cleaned often which was nice! Of course there are bugs but that's as expected for camping. The beach was large and very clean. We loved the sand and how soft it was. Boardwalks near the beach were great for walking the dogs (they're not allowed on the beach) and was probably the highlight of my trip. Overall really enjoyed our stay and recommend to anyone trying to camp at a beach site!

Yurt life for the win!…read more Since we had a staycation this Spring break, we decided to take a small trip to Muskegon State Park and stay at the yurt for two nights located in the winter sports complex. Check-in went smoothly thanks to an email with the combination and directions. The two nights cost us $120 to book online and the yurt was rustic, (no electricity or toilet) heated by a wood burning stove. We loved the experience, but the walk is a bit long to the out house, approximately 60-100 feet away. We brought our pillows, sleeping bags and extra blankets, since Spring weather is variable near Lake Michigan. My hubby got up every couple of hours to tend to the fire. We felt warm, but never hot. Definitely felt like camping, but it was nice to have a solid structure with bunk beds and a table to play games at. Wood is provided by the park for the wood stove, but not the outdoor fire pit. They have blinds on the windows for privacy and a battery operated lantern that can be hung with different brightness settings in order to play cards or read a book. This yurt can easily sleep 4-5 people and up to 7 with the pull out cots (though it would be a bit crowded). There are a plethora of trails and it was fun to check out the ice skating trail, cross country skiing trails, and the luge (even though it was closed for the season.) It looks like they also have zip lining and a fun playground to enjoy come summer. Across the road is a campground that overlooks Lake Michigan with plenty of seating to enjoy a picture perfect sunset. We've already rented a spot across the road for the summer and may check out the zip lining opportunities then! I heard they also have several luges on wheels that might be fun to learn how to manipulate. Those courses look awfully fun!
