If you walk around Oslo enough you'll notice lots of busts, statues, and other public works of art. This Haakon VII statue is located on 7 June Square (that's the day in 1905 that Norway declared an end to the union with Sweden).
Haakon VII (formally Prince Carl of Denmark) was King of Norway during WWII. When the Nazis invaded in April 1940, he rejected German demands to legitimize the Quisling puppet government. He refused to abdicate after going into exile in the UK. A recent TV series (Atlantic Crossing) offers a stylized interpretation of that time. The current King is his grandson - Harald V. read more
