Wow the jewels are beautiful and very expensive. Usually I expect really expensive small shops to be empty but this was heaving the day I went in for a look for my coveted wedding jewelry. One glance and I knew I was in to deep in the money swamp and needed to get out. There was a necklace exactly like the style I'm looking for but unfortunately it was in excess of £600.00 - where's that rich boyfriend when you need him? On the way out, with my hands firmly clamped to my credit card, I noticed in the first cabinet by the door a lovely little collection of necklaces and bracelets for little girls - not cheap but reasonably priced and cute as a button - if I ever have a reason to buy for an under ten year old little lady I will be back here with bells on. Watchcraft? Lynne: Ahhh!! [looks at sister in astonishment]. Gosh, she never fails to surprise me. I had no clue as to the name of the shop, and that pun went way over my head, yet my little sister who thought Ward Park and Castle Park were the same thing (which they're not) spotted both. Wow. It was actually my sister's suggestion to go see this little watch shop, and I happily complied. She'd been in with my mum before, and informed they had a lovely collection of watches, jewellery and novelty clocks. When we popped in yesterday, there was a little old lady with her zimmer frame and another lady with her buggy, and due to the size of the shop (ie. fairly compact), there wasn't a whole lot of room left for my sister and I. However, we had just enough time to take a quick look round at the various watches (cheap), jewellery (equally as cheap, and coming in all sorts of forms - brooches, necklaces, rings), and those cute novel clocks (they're like little figurines, in the form of golf bags, pianos, boats etc). Catchy name, a lot of good stock, and a watch-fixing service...yep, it's a goodie.

Watchcraft managed to fix a watch of mine that another of Bangor's jewellers said was unfixable. The difference is at Watchcraft the seem to be trying to save you a few quid rather than trying to get you to purchase a brand new watch. As well as being old fashioned in what they sell they still believe in old fashioned customer service which is a breath of fresh air.

So when I got engaged and my ring needed resized I was more than delighted to pay a visit to this shiny shop. I was greeted a lovely lady who was more than helpful. She took one look at my ring and exclaimed that she remembered selling it and called in another woman to come and meet me. The two of them recounted the whole story of my (then boyfriend) coming in and buying the ring. It was really nice to hear as he hadn't provided much of the details and made the experience very special for me. They apologised that the resizing would take a week and ensured me that they would ring as soon as it was returned. Less than a week later I got a call to pick up my ring. I couldn't go so sent my mum to pick it up and she too came home singing their praises. My husband went back to get me jewellery for the wedding and I believe they walked him through exactly what to get, asking for details of the suits/décor/venue etc to try and make the best choice (which they did). Such a great shop, where the personal touch is more than remembered. Recommend this entirely if you are looking for that special ring or even a nice piece of jewellery for your other half. :)

The Empathy Creations themselves are all handmade pieces of jewellery from basic costume jewellery right up to really beautiful pieces suitable for a special occasion. they will also sit with you and plan a set to your own liking if you are looking for something they haven't got already. The back of the shop is like a little art gallery displaying pieces of pottery, clocks and paintings by local artists - a fabulous treat right on my doorstep! Previous places we had looked had been pushy and totally over whelmed me with loads of different rings. Ethna was very kind, informative and understanding. Recently we went back to pick a wedding ring and there was a very funny moment when I was down on my hands and knees looking at the bottom shelf. The owner walked past the counter and started apologising. We later found out that he thought from my poise that I was proposing! I got my wedding ring here as well and it was at least £300 pounds cheaper than elsewhere! Highly, highly, highly recommend Ellison Brothers.

You could just drift around all day, imagining that ring on your finger, or that necklace around your neck...sigh. The Silver Store is one of the jewellery shops you know you'll find something you like. There is everything you could possibly want - costume jewellery in the most beautiful colours, sterling silver stack rings, fascinators, scarves, tiaras...the list goes on. The tiaras were of particular interest, as my sister had decided she wanted one for her formal (next year mind you, but it pays to be organised), so we had a wee nosey at this stunning range. It's located in the charming and peaceful Scotch Quarter area in The Courtyard, Carrickfergus.
