I had my taxes prepared at this H&R Block location for several years by Arfa Siddiqui, EA, an Enrolled Agent. I later hired a CPA to review my prior returns, and the CPA identified significant errors in returns prepared by this EA that resulted in me receiving substantial tax overpayments. I implore you to double check your taxes from the last 2-3 years as the IRS has a statute that errors can only be corrected going back 2-3 years for you to qualify for a refund of money you are owed. So if this HR Block made errors in years prior to that, you are not going to be able to recover that money. So please check your returns to make sure you received all the federal and state tax returns you are owed and make sure your returns were completed correctly. After correcting the affected returns, I am receiving MORE THAN $25,000 back in combined federal and California tax refunds including more than $20,000 from the IRS alone due to inaccurately calculated estimated tax payments b/c some of the regulations that indicated those taxes did not apply to me were simply overlooked. THESE ARE NOT TYPOS. You are correctly reading TWENTY-FIVE THOUSAND Dollars (USD), including more than TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS from the IRS alone. That is an absolutely positively EXTRAORDINARY amount of hard-earned AFTER-TAX money to have unnecessarily tied up because of tax-preparation errors. It was money I could have used for household bills and expenses saved, invested, earned interest on, or otherwise put to productive use. For an individual or family living with tighter finances, errors involving this amount of money could have caused very serious financial hardship. H&R Block ultimately refunded the tax-preparation fees I paid for two of the years in which the errors occurred. I appreciate that the company provided those refunds per their tax return accuracy guarantee which was honored. However, refunding the preparation fees does not erase the underlying problem or compensate for having tens of thousands of dollars unnecessarily tied up in tax overpayments for years. What I found particularly troubling was Arfa Siddiqui's response--or lack of one--after these problems came to light. I received NO apology from the EA, no expression of remorse, and no meaningful acknowledgment of the financial impact these errors had on me. Given the magnitude of the errors, I found that response extremely disappointing, discourteous, unprofessional and downright rude and insulting. Professionals can make mistakes. What matters afterward is accountability. When errors in professionally prepared tax returns result in a client overpaying tens of thousands of dollars, I believe an acknowledgment of what happened and a sincere apology are the very bare minimum. In my view, the magnitude of these errors represented an unacceptable failure in the level of care I expected from an Enrolled Agent preparing my tax returns. I am fortunate that another CPA identified the problems and helped correct the affected returns. Based on my experience, I would avoid actively Arfa Siddiqui or this H&R Block location again for tax preparation, and I would strongly encourage clients to carefully review their returns and consider obtaining an independent professional review if they have concerns about previously prepared returns. Arfa Siddiqui's profile says "22 years of experience as an H&R Block tax pro." This is absolutely not what I would expect from someone with that kind of experience. She blamed it on the HR Block software. When I said "I count on you to find errors," she did not acknowledge or apologize and actually laughed it off. This is not an unserious matter. I strongly recommend finding a CPA instead. It is worth the additional cost for the sake of accuracy. And again, make sure your taxes were filed properly for the last few years and that you received all of the tax return money from the government that you are owed. Please avoid Arfa Siddiqui for the sake of your and your family's finances. read more

I contacted our local H&R Block office in Davis after receiving a letter from the IRS. Our CPA retired and she moved out of the state and I called them to see if they could help me figure out what I needed to do about a very convoluted letter from the IRS. The receptionist assured me they could help and she promptly scheduled me with Michelle. To summarize- Michelle thought she should look at our returns from 2008 to present, I could tell she was concerned about the way our taxes were handled. Long story short, I became the poster child of H7R Block literally! From 2008-2011 she found over $16, 000 that was owed to us by the Feds. So there free review of past years certainly paid off! She refiled our taxs promptly, responded to the letter and gave us amazing tax tips for next year. What a life saver. Michelle is extremely knowledgeable but after two months I had problems with a tax return from 2008. I contacted H&R Block and the office was closed, except for Wednesdays. Since I purchased a plan that they would represent me if any difficulties arose, I looked for assistance when I received a letter from the IRS stating the return had been incorrectly filed. Now, several months later I am still trying to get them to write a letter to the IRS and follow-up and I am at a dead end with getting it taken care of. When you offer to prepare a 1040EZ for free, don't scoff at me when I come there specifically for that purpose. If you didn't want to do it for free, don't offer it. But when I came to H&R Block, I was optimistic, despite reading amanda l's review. I thought I shouldn't condemn a place if there's only one review. Not all tax preparers at that place could be bad, right? After my experience this afternoon, I can assure you that you don't want to go to this H&R Block. After completing my federal tax return, my preparer went ahead and filled out my CA state tax return and told me it would be $43 to complete it. I told him to void my state tax return so I could just complete it myself, and he tried to guilt-trip me into paying for it. Said things along the lines of "Oh it's only $43. You already got the 1040EZ for free," implying that I shouldn't be so cheap and to just pay the fee. He kept telling me I HAD to get it done because I owed the state money, but if he filed it for me, I wouldn't owe the state money because he would help me fill out some form. I simply told him that I'm a college student that can't afford to just fork over $43 willy nilly. He reluctantly cancelled my state tax return and completed my federal return. In the future, I will be filing at home since I actually found the free H&R Block program that I could used instead of coming in person. Also, the CA tax website has a program that makes filing a lot simpler. Doing things myself take out that middle man that'll try to guilt trip me and make me feel low about trying to save money. Really, H&R Block, if you're going to advertise a free service, don't be surprised if I come in wanting that free service and nothing else. read more
