It may be even older given its strategic location on the Euphrates River. It was used as a fortresses built a few kilometers downriver. There are a few hotels that are kind of cool above the river bank. The restaurants I went to along the water are mediocre at best, but they will fill you up. The marina has boats for rent (captained by the owner in most cases). Just be aware that the boats are generally large and meant for large groups. It f you don't want loud music you only have to make this clear to the driver, who are very accommodating.
