Maybe the best Italian dinner I've had in the UK, and as a snobby Londoner it causes me physical…read morepain to write that. Stuzzi is a too-good-to-be-true trifecta of wonderful food, excellent service, and reasonable pricing. The menu is small sharing plates, as many places are these days. With a group of four we got to have quite a lot of that menu. The tagliatelle in ox cheek ragu was a marvel of simplicity. The arancini completely changed my mind about a dish I've always considered an overrated way for a restaurant to dispose of extra risotto. The wine and cheese were superb, chosen for us by the charming wait staff. The digestif menu features a small but punchy selection of grappas -- never a given at British Italian restaurants and always appreciated by me.

I've been to this place a number of times and on each occasion it was excellent…read more Very friendly staff who are happy to tell you about any of the food on offer, a cosy and relaxed atmosphere with some pretty good music playing, great food and just an all round enjoyable and informal eating experience. They also have a nice selection of Italian deli bits and bobs for you to take away with you. We found some of the charcuterie and cheese impossible to resist. The idea is to order a few tapas sized portions of various dishes and then mix and match with your eating partners - and it works a treat. Not quite full? Order something else - the kitchen is efficient and we have never waited too long. Now that we are semi-regulars the staff have got to know us to some extent. I am very much into my wine and I take some care when ordering a bottle any place I go. At Stuzzi when they ask me what I want to drink I now just ask them to 'bring me something interesting' and that is exactly what they do. They have never let me down. Every time the wine that arrives at the table is well selected - delicious and not unreasonably priced. This is a restaurant that wants people to enjoy the wines on offer so the prices are sensible - in so many places these days the price of a decent bottle is ridiculous, but here you will find the opposite. If you want fine dining and silver service that's not what this place is about. It's too laid back for that and it's now what they set out to do. Instead you are served excellent food in an unhurried environment, and that vibe always seems to be found at every table. Fun, tasty, easy.

Eugh. Done once and never to be done again. Looking more like a conservatory or double glazing…read moresales base than an Italian restaurant from the outside, and looking like a bachelor vomited all over the interior, seriously, inside, purple suede, looks like MTV Cribs has had a word with the Cribette designers and said, pop in here and make it look silly. It all appears to try too hard, and maybe it is really all in the hope of distracting attention away from the food. If it didn't try too hard with pretention, then maybe we could accept it for what it is, basic food under the Italian food genre umbrella. The menu prices really are extortionate when you check it against the quality of the grub. Pasta is more tacky and chewy than the intended al dente texture, and my spinach and ricotta just didn't hit the spot. Flavourless and stodgy really. Steak at £20 really wasn't worth it, and my friend seemed to spend more time poking at it rather than eating it, as a foody, he really was disappointed with what was delivered. The salmon dish was ok, but my friend was not particularly impressed with what he got for his £13 meal. With high hopes it seems we were all a bit underwhelmed by the whole thing. The atmosphere didn't help. Loud, but not in the buzz of voices and general laughter department, more the sound of chairs and cutlery noise and general clatter. To sum it up, basic Italian grub, with Italian cuisine prices.

Replacing the long-running and exhausted Bellini's last year, Divino shares much of the problems…read moreBellini's did, but attempts to paper of these cracks with some eye-catching decor - purple and white suede give this place a false feeling of real class. Like Bellini's, Divino has pretty awful acoustics and the fact that it is crammed with more tables and chairs than it should be creates the same loud, echoey atmosphere that often ruined an evening at Bellini's. Despite the new ownership, the menu is very similar to that of Bellini's, and offers the usual Italian fare without any indication of creativity or uniqueness. The food itself is, infact, slightly worse now than it was under the old management - it is still satisfyingly adequate (I had the spicy pepperoni pasta dish and it was edible if unremarkable), but it was definitely better as Bellini's. Divino is usually fairly busy, so they must be doing something right (the attraction is surely a combination of the family-friendly environment and the low-end prices). If you liked Bellini's and you like purple suede, Divino is the place for you. If you want real quality Italian food, however, I suggest making the short trip down the Otley Road to Salvo's.

Chapel Allerton

One of the best ideas in a long time was to go get breakfast cum lunch...so that would be brunch…read morethen, at Casa Mia. I don't really care that it's in Chapel Allerton, the super cool area of Leeds, but it is, but that's not the primary reason why you should visit Casa Mia, you should visit Casa Mia because it's bloody good at what it does. Sitting rather unassumingly on the street it resides, the moment you approach Casa Mia, you are greeted with a warm hello that if it were a colour would be red or reddy orange. On warmer days, or as it's England, a day it's not raining or snowing will do, it's lovely to sit outside, order the sweet but well deserved American style breakfast or the Italian one if you choose, relax, chat if you must, read a book and just enjoy being taken mentally to somewhere warm and beautiful even though you are just in chilly Leeds. Lunch is equally as pleasing, with paninis, pasta, salads, fish, ciabatta, soups, all lovely in their descriptions and tasty on the tongue. It's a shame to rush through the mains, for the dessert, but they all look so good. Baskets of pastry filled with fruit and glaze and cream, oh and pie, oh and ice cream, and yes I think I'm drooling. The drinks selection is massive, in the morning there's a lovely range of fresh juices to choose from, starting with the traditional orange, apple, pineapple, to the pomegranate and kiwi flavours. Coffee is beautiful, strong and rich and reasonably priced too. Where most people go gooey eyed is over the hot chocolate menu. From the traditional to white chocolate, mint, orange, cherry, cinnamon apple, dark, extra dark, the list seems endless.

The menu is modest, but no complaints about the food, I enjoyed a fresh squeezed orange juice with my eggs and toast, exactly what I needed. I finished off with a slice of cake... yes for breakfast, why not!? On the other hand I got a toastie to take back with me and the bread had mold on it... All in all a nice experience and standard food (hopefully in date).
