Came here on a lunch date with my father and brother yesterday to celebrate Pre-Father's Day. There were two other tables that had single diners. We ordered the following: Sega Wat: Beef stew in a spicy, dark berbere sauce. Awaze Tibs: Lamb tibs sautéed with onions in a spicy awaze sauce. Vege Combo: Lentils, chickpeas, cabbage, etc. The food was good, no doubt, but the service was even better. The owner is the friendliest man you'll ever meet (besides my dad). He's fairly quiet, but he's always smiling and goes above and beyond to ensure his customers are taken care of. Our food came with a basket of Injera, and he promptly brought out another basket for us because he said we would need more (he was right). We asked for waters and once again, he brought out an extra bottle just in case we would need it. That's top notch service; thinking ahead on customers needs and ensuring they are well taken care of ahead of time. Halfway through our meal, the owner came out with yet another basket of injera, right when we were on our last piece. Wizardry. Throughout our time there he had a few customers come in and pick up takeout, but there were no other dine in customers that came in after us. The owner invites us to celebrate the Ethiopian New Year at his restaurant every year. During this time, they serve special food, play live music, and he makes rounds of Ethiopian Coffee for us to try. It's so fun, and it's an event that I look forward to year after year. This place deserves more support. I know that the concept of eating/grabbing soupy things with your hands may seem weird in America, but you should give the experience a try if you haven't done so already. This is my first time having Ethiopian food and I went with my mom and little did we know that they were celebrating eastern orthodox Christmas that day! It felt as though we were invited to a family Christmas party! The staff were so incredibly friendly and welcoming. When they celebrate a holiday, the restaurant ends up being a buffet style which was fun because we tried so many different foods. My mom and I were grateful because one of the girls could tell that this is our first time so she brought us up to the buffet and explained to us all the different foods and how to eat it. Alright... if you are looking for authentic Ethiopian food, this is the place. Service and bathrooms suck, but the food is great. We lived DC and frequented the Ethiopian restaurants out there. This is the closest we have found to being comparable or better. Tibs and combo platter are great. The owner is Ethiopian, so don't ask him to cook the Kitfo. I mean, you can, but he's going to look at you cross eyed for wanting to ruin his national dish. Also, get the tea. It's great. Haven't tried the coffee yet, next time. read more

By far my most favorite restaurant in GR. It's the only place I've been to more than once since moving here and I've probably been at least 5 times. Excellent, authentic, spicy and delicious Ethiopian food. I'm sure you can get some non-spicy varieties, but I appreciate some good spice. The flavors are on point, nothing watered down. I'd go out of my way for this place. I always order a week worth of food. The owner is phenomenal too, super friendly guy. Ahh- finally made it to Gursha! We had the veggie sampler, which had a yellow lentil dish, a red lentil dish (spicy!), cabbage and potatoes, chopped greens (a little bit spicy) all served, of course, with injera. Good old injera. I have to admit eating it is a challenge to me at times- it's sour, floppy bread with a texture that is unlike anything I've ever tried anywhere else. I appreciate the tang of the fermented flatbread, but sometimes as I eat I grow tired of it and wish I could scoop the food up with tortilla chips. There's always leftovers for that; and we had plenty of leftovers! I found all of the dishes to be intensely flavorful and tasty. We had water with our dinner, but they offer Coke products if you're interested. One funny thing involved ordering the traditional coffee; we were informed they only have one pot for preparing this, so we had to wait our turn. After we were done eating, the server informed us the pot was free and we could try the coffee. Despite it being 8:00 p.m. we decided to go for it! The coffee is served in a traditional wooden pot alongside a strong burning incense and is served black with sugar. It is delicious coffee, very strong but low acidity. Perfect! The atmosphere here is a bit lacking in ambience, but overall clean and comfortable. The incense smell might get a little strong at times, but altogether adds to the ambiance of Gursha. Altogether an interesting and worthwhile experience. read more

I did return to Gursha for their New Year's buffet, and things had improved - there was less of the "lingering cooking smells," which was the main reason for my 3 Star before. The food was very good, but there are several things that could move this restaurant to a 5 Star - at least in my opinion. Indeed, I did speak briefly with a woman who helps out and who had indicated that some of my comments / suggestions were not new. OK, here they are - and most could be grouped under the heading of "American style aspects of service expected in a restaurant:" 1) The place was fairly crowded, but we had returned after a first attempt in which there were many more people - adults and children. However, despite the crowds, there needs to be some recognition that a wait staff is CRITICAL! There were several people standing around in colorful garb, but there was a real lack of any ongoing service. Even with a buffet, drinks should be attended to - they were not; checking back to make sure all was OK is a good practice - not done. 2) There MUST be some way to clean hands after a few scoops of the great food! The injira bread is the best around, and taking a good size piece helps, but hands DO get a bit messy! The cocktail napkins are not enough. As there is not much grease, individual finger bowls with a petal or two of a rose would be a great touch. Failing that, some "wet wipes" would be helpful. 3) Beverages (far from a good selection, sadly) should NOT just be served in the can! No glass. No straw. No asking if either would be preferred. VERY BAD FORM. 4) There was NO labeling of what the food was - yes, it WAS DELICIOUS, but some labeling of the food near or on the serving dishes would be helpful especially since some were meat dishes - no idea what was the origin of the meat other than the chicken. 5) THERE SHOULD NEVER BE ANY FOOD THAT IS PICKED OFF A SERVING PLATE WITH FINGERS!!! The injira bread - really great - was served without any type of tongs - from a plate near the serving dishes. Now, there were plenty of children who MAY take a piece or select one or look through the pile . . . get my drift? CLEANLINESS IS ESSENTIAL and this restaurant just seems to lack obvious aspects and PROOF. 6) The owner and chef is friendly and he does try to make people feel welcome, but he and the others who are helping him - not sure if there are regular staff - just need to learn some common "standard operating procedures" that ALL restaurants should have. Yes, it is an ethnic restaurant with great food, but it could be so much better with just a few practices that would NOT do any violence to the culture! 7) Will we go back? Probably, and I was glad to hear that they have become busier, but I want a venue that is both culturally authentic in terms of food and has an appreciation for what must be in any restaurant in this country. The menu is large and varied and you can easily eat vegan, but there are lots of meat dishes to choose from. I give this place 4 stars because the food is great. It's not like my moms but it really hits the spot. And me being Eritrean I know good food. The owner who also served us is a sweet heart. My boyfriend who was born and raised in Ethiopia also loved the food. I will definitely come here again especially when I'm too lazy to make it at home. After we ate we ordered the traditional tea and it was good but it could have used a little extra spice but nothing to complain about.
