I called ahead and asked if they offer 30 day returns on purchases, like guitar Center. They told me yes they definitely do. I drove 45 minutes to look at possibly buying a new amp for $3k. First thing they said to me when I got to the store was actually the return policy is seven days. Then after looking at the amp for 20 or 30 minutes I pulled out my credit card and they said we actually need to clarify that returns are only for in-store credit only. I probably would've bought and kept the amp anyway, but the fact that they were deceptive with me the entire time really was a waste of my day. They should've been honest and upfront when I called and said we have a seven day return policy for in-store credit. Then I could've decided if I wanted to head out and buy an amp or not. Tried to be optimistic, but last 3 guitars had worked, came back less than stellar, even charged me for one suppose to call first if not 100% sure could fix problem... surprise ending... they worked on it anyway (without calling) their solution wasnt the cure, they still charged me. Another was set up, but returned with same issues, since a far drive for me, brought it back about 60 days later, even willing to pay to let them fix issues, they said not taking repairs or set ups!! read more

I've been a customer and fan of Guitar Czar for years. Jimmy is super smart, awesome, fair, and friendly. I bought a sweet Gretsch, 2 Takamines, and a couple of Fender amps from them. They have a cool local vibe and always make good suggestions when I need advice. Then only improvements I would suggest are figuring out faster and better priced luthier services somehow, and maybe try creating a slightly more welcoming environment, but that said they are really good at what they do and I'll keep shopping with them. This beautiful Squire Jazzmaster caught his eye and his heart. It feels so good and plays incredibly. If you are hesitant about Squire, please play one first. This guitar plays and sounds better than both our American made Strats. Not kidding! The satin feel of the neck and the aged hardware make this thing an absolute stunner. A few years back the hipster sales guy tried to con me on a trade in -turned out the bass I was considering wasn't the actual model they claimed it to be -neck was one model (the higher price) but the body was from another, much lower model (yay smart phones and on the sly internet searches of serial numbers that didn't match). I only caught it because I was familiar with the brand and was surprised to see that pickup configuration with that model neck. Turns out they didn't belong together. It's possible they didn't realize it and got conned themselves when they bought it, but supposedly being pro's at selling equipment, I doubt it. Then most recently I was told rather rudely that, "you can only try a guitar if you buy it". WTF? Sure, blame covid as an excuse, but I bet your sales suffer with that approach, bro. I then looked at flatwound bass strings but was told that "Even if I buy them, it would be at least a month before they could do the neck adjustment." I bought them somewhere else, and had the neck adjusted the same day. So sorry to try and trouble them with my business. It won't happen again. They are added to my list of "no go" businesses. read more

The small variety of gear and the prices are higher than compared to shopping online. Which seems crazy to me. These are just a few of the reasons I do not enjoy trying to shop at Guitar Czar. The store has been around in Salt Lake for a long time. I do not know how they are still in business. Because every time I have ever gone into that guitar shop. My young tweenish son recently inherited an electric guitar and with it rock and roll dreams. With a house full of novices we headed over to Guitar Czar to get some strings and ask some questions. These guys gave us their full attention and seemed to be celebrating a new guitar team member like Mother Nature welcoming the first butterfly of Spring. Not only did they help my pubescent boy select some strings, they took pity on his rumpled, meager dollar bills and strung the guitar, cleaned it up, fixed some loose hardware and answer a plethora of questions. It is clear they are passionate about what they do and they treat each customer, no matter who, with kindness and respect. This place turned an old Ibanez basswood guitar into something stellar. I asked them to make it sound like a Stratocaster, and they made it sound BETTER than my Player Series Strat. There was a bit of a price tag on this business (Seymour Duncan pickups aren't an econo brand) but the guitar sounds world class now. New location, very wisely placed next door to Salt City drums. This one is much cleaner than the previous location, which was a fixture and loaded with charm, but with kind of an annoying parking lot. The usual devotion to guitars was here, with an excellent layout and the climatized room for the acoustics. This is a very likable place and I think it will do well, but there's something missing, just a little grace note that the other place had...a sort of feel. Part of this is the great Eric no longer being as prominent a part of things as before, I'm sure, but I loved spending time at the other place and this place doesn't inspire the same sentiment...yet, anyway. I have high hopes that once they work the bugs out of the new joint, it will work out its own flavor and be different, but equal. As it is, if you care at all about guitars, this is a must. read more

Guitar Czar is one of the few independent music shops left in SLC, all the others being run out by Guitar Center. I like bringing the locals my business, so I hit them up whenever I can. The guys there are super friendly and are happy to help you out with whatever you are looking at, whether it be strings or a new guitar. They have a fairly good selection of amps and effects, though the selection of guitars seems a little limited. On the plus side, I think they are only one of two dealers who carry Orange Amps in Utah. Hearing these amps alone is worth visiting Guitar Czar. The repair guy really knows his stuff and has set up many of my guitars, though his waiting list can get quite long at times. They need another person working on that stuff! Unfortunately, being a small shop they do tend to be more expensive than Guitar Center. I go to Guitar Czar whenever I need something small like picks, strings or maybe some cables and pedals. But for big purchases like a new guitar or amp, I have to go somewhere a bit more competitively priced. read more

This is a must return guitar store. The staff are engaging, knowledgeable, interesting and extremely helpful! They sell higher end instrument, Gibson, Taylor, Guild... but the treat for me was playing the Coal Creek. The neck has a feel and fit that is smooth and easy to play. Did I mention that the tone is fantastic! No need for a setup- perfection! If I lived in town this would be my go to guitar store... forget the big chains. I left the Guitar Czar with a new guitar in hand (Coal Creek) and a smile on my face! ( I got a great deal with a few extras too!) Also I have to mention the Gibson guitar rep was there... It was a pleasure speaking to him, he went out of his way to help me with a small problem with a Gibson that I already own. You dont get this kind of service everyday. These guys are in the business for the right reason, they LOVE music, they support artists, and are invested in the community. I busted a string on the banjo I had just inherited from my dying grandma. She wanted to hear me play it before she died. It was my grandpa's who has passed 4 years earlier. And during my first time trying to self teach on this precious banjo I busted a string... Ugh. I first called Guitar center. They said a pack of banjo strings would be $18 plus $20 to restring it. Wait what? I don't have that kind of money! So luckily I found Guitar Czar and went there. One of the employees found a solo string and restrung my banjo for a grand total of 64¢. Guitar czar is exactly what I want in a guitar store. Moms might not quite understand it, real guitarists will dig it. PERFECT! They stock really good gear, the employees are chillin, and the techs are great. I've had custom setups on my guitars including my 8 string with a custom tuning and it's always dialed. My guitars rip thanks to these dudes. To me, it's is the quintessential guitar store experience. Pricing is compareable to everywhere else anyway so why not buy local? I can promise you they will beat any of the big stores if even necessary and they have the same layaway and financing options. Also, the guitars on the wall are all set up nicely to play so you can actually get a feel for the instrument, unlike guitarcenter where you're lucky to see all 6 strings in tact and the action is either dead and buzzing or 1/4 inch off the fretboard. After trying a few other shops in town, mainly Guitar Center in Taylorsville and The Guitar Shop in Riverton I figured I would try these guys because I was not getting what I wanted. Within a minute of entering the store, Jess asked if I needed some help. She was super patient with me as I asked lots of questions. We tried all sorts of guitars and I went into the shop looking for a specific guitar and ended up meeting with something that I think I'm going to like much better. Never once did I feel like she was trying to upsell me and get me to spend more money than I wanted to. Plus their prices were reasonable. Very excited to have found this shop. However, when I picked it up today, I was BLOWN AWAY with what they did (planed the frets to compensate for a twisted neck) at no additional cost. The buzzing is going and the intonation is spot-on.
