A definite must stop for the vinyl junkie when visiting London…read more Once upon a time record stores dotted the landscape on this side of the pond, but, as in the US, that is no longer the case. This store is a passion project and while physically it's not a huge location, browsing here you'll find loads of attractive vinyl, of both the 7" and 12" variety, all reasonably priced. You'll also find an owner (and I'm sure a staff, though I was fortunate enough on my visit to meet the owner Claudia) who is passionate about music and happy to chat with you about your favorite artists. She may even share some of hers as well. I have to say, she has great taste. Classic 60's soul (Al Green, Aretha, Motown and Stax), all are present here, as are so many other classic artists. The selection is primarily used, though there is plenty of new vinyl to be found, and while it skews on the Soul, R&B, and Reggae side, you will find Pop, Rock, as well as Dance and other genres represented. If you don't see what you're looking for, be sure to ask the staff. If it can be ordered, they'll be happy to do so. Brixton is lucky to have Pure Vinyl, and when I visit next I'd love to see more of this type of music outlet in London. Maybe even another location?

After living so close to this shop for year and never actually going in to spend a serious amount of time browsing here, I feel like I've committed a crime. Their tag line is "Friendly service, record and book finding service". Perfect for a Saturday morning hangover browsing session. I could spend a while in here. It's not huge, but perfectly formed and reasonably priced. They even have a vintage clothing section at the bottom although I couldn't quite pull myself away from the records to have a look. I will be back. They have a huge selection of classics, not just the crusty records you find in other second hand vinyl stores. A must for any music collector.

Fives is a an excellent independent record shop and has been part Leigh's high street for years…read more Sandra and Tony are passionate about music and give great advice and service. Fives are also a champion for local music and are a real help to local unsigned bands, offering in-store showcases, selling vinyl/ CDs with little or no mark up and always promoting gigs. With an excellent selection of vinyl and a really great catalogue of blues, jazz and classical as well as all the new releases there really is something for everyone if you have time to browse. Also if you need something they will order it in and call you when it's in. Great service, great shop and independent! Hope it's around in Leigh for many more years.

From the prices that they charge you'd think that you were getting some great service but they don't seem particularly interested in making either conversation or recommendations so all the times I've visited its been somewhat of a sombre affair. I must be honest I don't even remember them having music playing which is odd for a record shop??? Its a shame because with a bit of love and attention it could be truly great. The stock is there, its just laid out in such a drab fashion that it makes you forget it existed. Get rid of the dull grey cantilever wall racks, make it look a bit more airy and up to date and perhaps involve some customer service and it would go far!

There's a collection of CDs to peruse too, but the real focus is the wealth of records to flick through. I found a fair few rarities here, and although I don't have a Vinyl player at uni, picked them up to display on my wall. Joy Division's "Love Will Tear us Apart" and Kitchens of Distinction's "Quick as Rainbows" both tempted me, and I raked the last few pence out of my wallet so that I could take 'em home with me for a meagre £6.50. Seeing that it was all the money that I had left, the cashier was nice enough to let me off the 50p in case I needed it in an emergency! Now I'm no lightning calculator, but I could see I was already getting a deal as it was, and to get a considerable percentage off on top from the kindness of a strangers heart just sweetened the deal. From now on, I have two music shops in my life. Resident for CD's, and Monkey Music for Vinyl. Simple as

When you step inside you quickly become aware of how small the store is; there are records along every wall, with an island of CD's in the middle of the living room sized shop. In terms of selection, I was massively surprised by what was on offer. I found 3 Pixies 12' vinyls, all in top condition, all costing £6 each. Obscure bands of the 90's like Sonic Youth, or dead musicians from the 60's like James Brown are all immortalised in record form within the emporium. I don't think there is a thing that could be said against Monkey music emporium, certainly not from a music lover's perspective. The range of records on offer makes it so easy just to waste time flicking through row after row, waiting to see what you'll discover.

Left my group that I was with and took off to the other side of the city and found this place. It was perfect. Spent a bunch of time talking to the staff and some other patrons about punk in the US and the UK and got some great local recommendations from them (though wish someone had recommended Frank Turner to me then - I was practically on his doorstep and now I love him lol). They also sell jukebox records and memorabilia, which is all reasonably priced. They also have a website and links on amazon and ebay, so if you want to see what's in store before you go, it's helpful in that respect. I have seen it shut once or twice, so you may want to check out opening times before you go, but it's a great little place for vintage music.
