I've been in the market for a bass guitar for a few months now and have made several visits while trying to find something I'll really love and want to pick up every day. I'm still an early beginner on bass, but I've been playing acoustic guitar for about 10 years so cut me a little slack The store has a great selection of instruments, which I really appreciated. However, the help I received was a bit inconsistent. At times, it felt like some employees weren't very interested in assisting me, possibly because I'm newer to electric gear. I was hoping for more guidance on what I actually needed, rather than just being pointed toward what was available to sell. That said, Kurt really stood out. He was super helpful, welcoming, and made me feel comfortable plugging in and trying things out even if I didn't sound great That kind of experience goes a long way. I did end up buying a bass and amp from the Kansas City location, and honestly, I don't think I would've made the purchase without Kurt's help. Appreciate it, man. read more

This is now 5 times I've been in the Overland Park store and left frustrated. I went in to look at a microphone. There were two employees behind the counter in the back room where the microphones are. One was messing with a synthesizer and the other was watching him. At no point did either look in my direction or ask if they could help. The microphone I wanted to look at had a spot in the display case but the mic was gone. Probably not in stock. So I walked out. The employee previously messing with the synthesizer was now behind the counter up front doing something on a computer or register, but there was no customer opposite him. Ok so we went there met the manager Mike, we explained this was day one we knew nothing about guitars at all but my wife wanted to get started. After talking a bit finding out what interested her he turned us over to Jessie. Now I love it when a salesman knows what he's talking about. He demonstrated several guitars for us and he did not try and talk us into something expensive or a bunch of gear we didn't need. And Jessie's demonstration Wow this guy is talented. Mike helped set up lessons and everything. Lessons were much cheaper than I expected. It's not just the incredible inventory, it's the staff. Mike and Jessie were the ones we worked with, but we seen dozens of musicians from beginners to experts and everyone was treated great. It's the people that make the difference, we didn't spend a lot and customer service was outstanding. Looking forward to a long relationship with this company. Mike and Jessie thank you. read more

Clean your FREAKING restrooms! Daughter used to take lessons there and we would NOT let her use the restroom. She had to wait until we got home because they alway smell like piss and they are filthy. I've been in truck stops that are cleaner. read more

I have been to the Overland Park location 2 times so far and I can say that this store currently has some great staff and customer service, in comparison to the other stores nearby. They are very welcoming, attentive and more than happy to help. Management has also been very helpful by asking open ended questions. I'll definitely shop at this location again and again. read more

Notorious for selling returned gear as new. They will lie to your face about it and will argue with you even though it is missing the box, manual and a cable that came with it. The cables were floppy and unkinked from packing, a tell tale sign of use. Garrett was smug and unhelpful. He couldn't care less, after all it wasn't his money or time. He really did not want to be bothered. New means unused, unopened, undamaged, and in its original packaging. read more

I have gone into this Guitar Center a few times. Even though I'm not a musician, it's a great store to look around for gems. I love that there's actual albums, lunch boxes, pink guitars, and cool T-shirts. Alex was very helpful on my selection of the best T-shirt for me. Great customer service makes the difference if I go back to the store (which I will). I highly recommend stopping by and seeing their selection of items. Great place and great service! read more

I wish I had read some of the one-star reviews before making a purchase here. It might have saved me some aggravation. I purchased a ukulele online as a Christmas gift for my guitar-playing wife and picked it up at this Guitar Center. When I walked into the place, no one there was particularly friendly or helpful, but it was a simple transaction--they handed me a box and I signed for it. The ukulele was defective and had to be returned but when my wife walked into this store, boxed ukulele in hand, no one paid any attention to her. After 20 minutes or so, she finally got someone's attention but he was condescending and insulting, referring to my gift several times as a "cheap instrument." "What do you expect?" The employee was unwilling to locate a replacement so she just had him process a refund. There are too many high-quality music stores around to ever have to deal with jerks like these. Although their business model is losing money hand over fist and they're operating deep in the red (who can really afford to have a wall full of guitars that everyone play but no one ever buys) I'm still like a kid in a candy store at this place. It's good to try stuff out before I order them elsewhere tax free. I still buy my strings and picks here. Sometimes I get some recording things I need. I try to prop up their business model the best I can. Their COVID response is some of the silliest things I've seen. GC saving the world one customer at a time. They have a store quota, which must be very low, making customers wait in line outside to get strings. Meanwhile, someone is trying every guitar on the wall for an hour. Are those instruments sanitized afterwards? Who knows? Didn't seem to be. Meanwhile, go over to the home and garden center and stand shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of people looking for tomato plants. This makes me just order guitar equipment online. read more

Once again, I had a great experience today at Guitar Center! My friend was looking for a Father's Day gift for her hubby. Alex was a great help in her selection of a guitar strap for his Banjo. He took the time to help her find what she was looking for, and was very happy. I really appreciate good customer service these days. I got it at Guitar Center when I came in a month ago. We had a very negative experience here at The Guitar Center. No customer service whatsoever! I gave my husband a package of guitar lessons for Christmas. He was very excited when he opened his gift as someone that has played the guitar for 60+ years but entirely self taught and no formal lessons. Unfortunately, when it came time to call to schedule his lessons it was one red flag after another until finally we had no choice but to cancel the lessons altogether! I bought a guitar here three months ago. When I bought it, the staff was friendly and helpful. That's the only reason this gets two stars instead of one. The pickup in my guitar broke after about two and a half months of regular use. The strings started rattling when I played them around the same time. Basically, my guitar became unplayable. It's a Fender guitar and I understand that's Fender's fault and not Guitar Center's. However, when I took my guitar in to get it checked out, the employee there was completely incompetent. I wish I had gotten his name. I told him about the pickup and the rattling strings, and without asking permission he grabbed my guitar and started riffing. I understand he's "a professional" but you should still ask before just jamming on someone's guitar, especially when they've brought it in claiming it's BROKEN. He was just ripping out a solo the whole time I was trying to explain what was wrong with it. That's fine if you're actually listening to what I'm saying, which he clearly wasn't, since he completely IGNORED the broken pickup that was clunking around the inside of my guitar's body like car keys in a dryer, and his grand solution to the rattling was "you just need new strings". That's funny, I already tried new strings! Maybe you would know that if you had been listening to me instead of farting around on my broken guitar like some off-brand Jimi Hendrix! When I asked about the warranty he said "the standard warranty is only two months, and honestly that's pretty gracious". Oh, I see. Most guitars break after just 3 months so this is normal, is it? Either you guys sell guitars knowing this is gonna happen in three months, or this guy was just being a d*ck. This employee was condescending and totally unhelpful. I'll be taking my guitar to a different Fender distributor and never coming back here. read more

A joke. Came in interested in a particular drum set and prepared to spend over $1,500. Employee was playing on it like he was auditioning to replace Taylor in the foo fighters when I came In. When I walked up I believe he thought I was walking up to admire him, but really was just hoping for 30 seconds to validate a couple of things on the set. Never stopped playing, and I never got a chance to look at it, so I left. Will just buy it from Sweetwater online. Everything is still in boxes and it looks more like storage than a store. Idk who's managing that place, but that may be the least organized store I've ever seen. Paid $200 for 3 lessons. Paid for my first 4 30 minute lessons for $100. After my first three lessons in July, my instructor gets sick for 2 weeks straight. During this time I got charged $100 for 4 lessons in August. Told them I would like to reschedule the missing lesson, and stop after the 4 lessons in August. Well, because I had cancelled my lessons for September, I couldn't do anymore lessons. Period. They refuse to reschedule, refund, or otherwise compensate for this legal robbery. One more thing: you can always get the same guitar cheaper online. read more

She was doing nothing but running back-and-forth. Asked to look at a pedal. Got one. Realized that the pedal needed a compressor in front of it to work properly. Tried to round up Amy. Guitar Center already had my money from a shitty deal in Independence, but didn't have the item I was looking for. I came to Leawood to try the item in person, but when I tried to run the gear at operating volume, I was told to turn it down, so I just unplugged and decided to take it home to demo it. I was supposed to get 15% off from a promotion on trade-in because of my exchange in Independence, but it was not honored, which I was concerned about this exact thing. So, Guitar Center extracted my money into gift cards through shitty business dealings and broken promises from managers. It's no wonder that they're losing money; they don't know how to deal with customers that aren't buying starter guitars. They've long lost their staff that had any credible knowledge of the products they have in store. It's crazy how a gift card from a relative can turn into such a dumpster fire. I will avoid Guitar Center for my future purchases and you should too. If I'm gonna have my money tangled up in store credit, I'd rather give my money to Sweetwater. read more

Fortunately, the midwestern regional manager reached out to me an offered me an apology. His actions went along way, and I really appreciate him doing so. As for the store, only time will tell. I've never been to a more unwelcoming guitar enter in my life. These people clearly didn't want to be there. First I called to see what time they close being pretty sure the answer was 9 but not I'm not from around here so I decided to check. The girl on the phone says, with no hesitation, "8:45." Okay... that's weird. I show up around 8 and the place is dead silent. No music, no greetings, just the sound of the little push sweeper. I quietly played a guitar for a few minutes in the awkward silence then put it back on the wall. I took a walk around the store to check out what they had then left. It felt more like a library than a Guitar Center. One other guy played an electric guitar at a whisper volume then gave up the same way I did. Pro tip: They close at 9 but don't show up after 730 or at all maybe. read more

The largest store in the metro for all things guitar. Not that I play guitar though. My reason for giving 5 stars is due to the ridiculously huge variety of non-guitar instruments available. Particularly the percussion selection here is absolutely wild. My personal favorites are all of the LP (Latin Percussion) items available. Everything from congas to timbales, bongos, and everything else you need for merengue and salsa. And of course if you are not into merengue/salsa, there are tons of drum sets and accessories to keep you occupied. The staff here is also quite helpful although they do hire many inexperienced noobs. But you really can't blame them since I am sure it's a pretty educational place to work if you are trying to learn about instruments in general. read more

This joint is pretty awesome when it comes to musical instruments. I bought a guitar here and percussion equipment. Their prices are a little high though. I was looking to buy some congas and just couldn't pay what they were asking for. I decided to get my congas somewhere else. I do like their set up though and they also have some orchestra stringed instruments. I believe they rent these out to kids during the school year so that works out great for them. I don't like their set up when you buy something though. It's like getting into the airport security, only you are just trying to get the heck out of the store. read more

Beware the Bogner Line of pedals. They have known issues from the manufacturer. I got stuck with a $300 pedal that doesn't work, and, if it did work, it cannot be ran with any other power source than the one spot. So if you have a pedal power or strymon power source, nope, it isn't going to work properly. I've been wrestling with this pedal beyond the 45 day return policy, due to having a heavy workload. So Guitar Center would rather lose a lifelong, over $20k in purchases history, card holder customer over the issue. The product should be pulled from the shelf until Bogner can figure out the issue. The online reviews are mixed. Some people like them, and some people have had 3-4 bad replacements. Seems like a manufacturer issue, but Guitar Center shrugs their shoulders. Happy shopping! I've now spent plenty of money and time in this guitar center, and all my experiences have been fantastic. I bought a keyboard a long time ago here, and recently came back to buy a condenser mic, audio interface, studio monitors, and accessories and cables to put it all together. My experience was just amazing here. The multiple times I came in recently with a billion questions were well received, even though many of those times I didn't outright buy anything then. I was looking at the new rode nt1 mic, and they even set it up with a computer so I could hear myself through it, and since it is relatively new, they've been very short on stock. Still, they made sure I knew when the new stock of mics were coming in, and that I had everything I needed when I did pull the trigger. Also, the guys there are so helpful at helping me figure out what I wanted, and they didn't force anything. When I came in knowing I wanted the exact mic and AI, but I hadn't done much research on studio monitors, the guy helped explain the studio monitor choices, and by no means was he forcing me to make a decision there. In fact, he recommended that I thought about it first and read up on the different options before buying the monitors. The best things are their inexpensive warranties, that can be utilized at any Guitar Center for full replacement and/or repair for 2-3 years. These guys surely made me feel confident in my decisions and the warranties gave a big peace of mind too. Happy to recommend this store to anyone, and when I need more studio stuff I'll be undoubtedly returning here! read more

While I've only shopped here a few times, I've been pleased with the service each time. Most recently I was trying to find a last minute Valentine's Day gift for my husband. When I called they told me they weren't officially open and evidently weren't able (or maybe willing) to check the shelf at that time. But when I called back 30 minutes later, I was transferred to the appropriate department who confirmed having the item in stock, but only one left. They held it for me so I could drive over from Lawrence. When I got there they explained protection plan options but did not push me at all which was appreciated. They suggested a few other items that would compliment the item I was purchasing which was appreciated. I also have tried to purchase a specific guitar online from Guitar Center. Unfortunately it took them a few days to notify me that it was back ordered until after Christmas. The service was excellent though, and they offered to help find another selection. I wasn't interested in anything other than the specific guitar I ordered so they simply refunded me with no pressure or issues, all the while being apologetic for the inconvenience. read more
