Guys in the pro audio section are awesome. They took time to troubleshoot a mixer/mic problem for me and totally went above and beyond!

Had a blast this afternoon checking out instruments at Griggs!…read more Tom helped me out in the flute and clarinet room, and showed me all the awesome Cannonball gear and the useful (weatherproof!) features of the Buffet Festival like an extra left-handed Eb key - not to mention what to keep an eye out for in their next releases! Go ask him if you're curious!). Then we checked out the beautiful flutes and feels of the different options. Also went over to see the tenor ukuleles and bases in the guitar room, and Mark was walking me through the options and explaining the backgrounds of the different companies. He also helped point out to me options on different levels, like the basics versus instruments with "extras," or the higher end ones. Dana also had welcomed us as we walked in, and he and my husband connected over the organ - musicians of which are comparatively rare. You can tell the people here love what they do, and want to share it with you too. I'll definitely come back next time I'm in town!

As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by a long haired gentleman named Tony. He quickly directed me…read moreover to the "flute expert" and she then helped me find the perfect "pretty melodies" I had asked for. You could tell she had played through the books and even gave me a few of her favorites. It's a busy store, divided in two rooms, with lessons going on in the back. When you first walk in the front doors its all guitars and drums and rock and roll kind of stuff. Then to the right it is more band instruments, such as flutes and clarinets and such. Great place for pop sheet music! What a collection!

Wallace Music - David Alm tuning his homemade banjo for the first time. It's amazing how much his guitar lessons with Mike Wallace transferred to this.

I met Mike Wallace more than 35 years ago when I took my teen-aged son to Bowlby's for guitar…read morelessons. He stuck with it for awhile and played off and on after he grew up and left home. Like most things, life gets in the way and people give up things they like the most. He kept his guitar though. During Covid, with plenty of time at home, he started playing it again. All the things Mike taught him about the music of the guitar--the notes as well as chords, picking as well as strumming--it all came back to him. So imagine our surprise when he contacted his dad and asked him to help him make a wooden, Appalachian-style banjo! He sent him links to his online research and gave him a month or so to acquire what he needed before he came to the QC a month later to run the Bix. Thanks to another "Mike" at Native Woods in Rock Island, the wood was purchased and cut so the two of them could assemble and string it when he arrived for the race. Enough of the project was done that week so he could finish it back in his apartment in Brooklyn, NY. This never would have happened without those guitar lessons with Mike Wallace at Bowlby's many years ago.

A Triple Plus service and quality!!!

I've been a loyal Music Makers customer for several years. I love doing business with the helpful,…read moreknowledgeable staff because they make every visit a pleasure as well as a valuable learning experience. Owner Dave Plunk is truly a man of integrity and kindness. Here's one example: Last year, when I was hit out of the blue by a perfect storm of unforeseen expenditures, I found myself in a "too-much-month-at-the-end-of-the-money" situation. I brought in some equipment to sell and I was prepared to accept pretty much any cash offer. Dave paid me a surprisingly generous sum for the items - far more than I would have received from Guitar Center or a pawn shop - and I was able to make it to my next paycheck without having to sell my plasma to a blood bank. :) I stopped in today just to get picks and strings and, as usual, I ended up developing a torrid crush on one of the new guitars in stock - a Fender California Series Redondo Player acoustic-electric with a flashy metallic lime-colored finish (Fender calls it "Electric Jade") and mahogany neck. It had no price tag so, having recovered from last year's little fiscal crisis, I inquired about the cost. Dave quoted me a very reasonable price but quickly added that if I bought it today, he'd knock a hundred dollars off. "SOLD!" I said. It was just one more in the long list of satisfying experiences I've had at Music Makers. Though I had no doubt whatsoever that I had done quite well on the deal, out of curiosity, I checked to see how much internet retailers are charging for the same guitar. Musiciansfriend.com has a used one for sale, with some minor blemishes, and it's going for $20 more than Dave charged me for a brand new one! I wholeheartedly encourage anyone who is looking for musical instruments, live sound equipment or lessons to go to Music Makers. You'll be glad you did.
