But there I was at…read moreEl Sur, a fusion Central American restaurant in Little Rock eating the baleadas that I had always wanted to try in Union City. When I had previously heard about baleadas, it was primarily in the context of the sencilla (simple) variety - traditionally had for breakfast and filled with just cheese and beans, almost like a pupusa with lighter dough. Here, I tried what I assume to be a more updated take on the dish, filled to a voluminous extent with avocado, plantain, and a protein of your choice (cauliflower for me). It was a delicious, filling meal in lively environs that I would certainly visit again.

The restaurant is located on the edge of the River Market District. The entrance is actually below street level. Take the stairs down to the front patio/courtyard area to get to the main entrance. Despite being downtown, the restaurant has a neighborhood feel to it. My server Camila was excellent! She was great about making recommendations and answering my questions. I ordered the Flank Steak (medium) with mixed vegetables (squash, zucchini, red pepper, onions) and mashed potatoes. It came with chimichurri sauce which was so good. The steak was very tender and flavorful. The veggies were seasoned well and were prepared al dente which I prefer. It was so much food and I couldn't finish it all. I didn't have anything to drink besides water, but the drink menu featured specialty cocktails like the Caipirinha and the Caipiroska. They also offered other cocktails, wine, beer, and NA beverages. I don't know much about the Little Rock culinary scene, but I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised to find this Argentinian restaurant. What a great discovery!

The salad was very fresh with nice greens and tomatoes, and to my delight, no iceberg lettuce. All the meat was perfectly seasoned and cooked the right way. Our server was very sweet and took excellent care of us. Decor was pretty simple, but it's a casual place, so not a big deal, I care most about what I'm eating anyway. We finished with a quatro leches cake, which is like tres leches but drizzled with dulce de leche. It was outstanding. If you like meat, they don't mess around here.

Both times we were the only people dining and it took a very very long. We had the same server both times. Very kind, not his fault that the food took so long to arrive. Regarding the ambiance - it's obvious that the place was vacant for a long time, there is a definite "odor" when you enter. My most recent disappointment -during our most recent my husband and I both ordered off the lunch menu, but were charged $5-$7 more than what was listed for each meal. Also, we both had water, but were charged for "aguas frescas" - I would have stuck around to request it be corrected, but the meal had already taken so long and our waiter was no where to be seen (only one other table at the time). In summary: it's a mixed bag. I really want to like it, but not sure if they deserve a 3rd opportunity.

Their food truck is a regular feature of the Little Rock scene, so I hope you will look for it. The highlight was the arepas, which are corn-fried cakes (think hoecake if you hail from the South). These dishes are ancient and go back to the pre-Columbian era, so they may be some of the oldest original food that you can buy on this continent. We also enjoyed the enpanadas, which are fried turnovers filled with apples, pork, or chicken. Black beans are also available.
