If you're thinking about doing their Computer Science course, look elsewhere.
Here are some of the issues I have had so far.
- Mandatory Learning Development and Mathematics modules, both do little to improve one's knowledge on computing. Everything in mathematics that relates to computing is being taught again in the Computer Hardware module.
- The workload balance is ridiculous. 6 hour long class tests for maths as part of continuous assessment for the year, while in other modules we get the odd 1000-1500 word assignment, or simplistic computer programs to do in java. Each lecturer bar programming and web dev have vastly different and unreasonable assessment criteria.
- Lecturers are pedantic about format regardless of content. If you uploaded a high grade harvard standard paper but have the wrong file extension you will receive a fail or no marks. Job training is a poor excuse, mistakes happen and if you believe the punishment for small mistakes should be failure, maybe you'll like it I guess. eg. all lecturers bar one demand zip files, one does not. 38% of the year got a mark of 10/100 on an assigment because a lecturer refused to open their zip file.
- Critically understaffed, assignments take forever to receive a mark for. Expect to receive feedback or a mark months down the line.
- Terrible schedule, get used to sitting around on your laptop or if you can't afford one, playing pool. Anywhere from 2-4 hours at a time.
- Large amount of lectures devoted completely to revision or simply talking about assignments.
- Students equally as bad almost, class disturbance is common yet few lecturers decide to do anything about it. Other students who wish to hear the lecturer have complained, awaiting to see the results. It is quite a bit worse than secondary school, at present it serves as more of a daycare than a place of academic pursuit. read more
