The slow but sure exploration of Sale continued with Parisian one lunchtime…read more At first I wasn't sure if it had been there for years or had just literally opened for business, as there was a fair bit of empty shelving, but it turns out it was the former and I'd probably just arrived at the tail end of the lunchtime rush. The couple who own it were welcoming, and French, so I had a feeling that food quality was not going to be an issue. They have a decent range of sandwich options (all made from scratch) so I opted for the 'Parisian Ham Special' to take away which was less than £4 if memory serves - and it was very tasty indeed. Loads of ham and salad with just enough mustard mayo to add to the flavour; the baguette was warm and fresh. I also spied a counter of unusual desserty-type things but resisted temptation. This time. On more pleasant days they have seating out front (though they face on to the busy Northenden Road so it's not exactly peaceful, but good for watching the world go by).

They have a good selection of sandwiches, the Greek is particularly good with a delicious mix of olives, feta, tomatoes, mint and cucumber. I would also recommend the salmon deluxe but to be honest you wouldn't be disappointed with anything you ordered. Parisian also do outside catering and we have used them at my work several times and have been impressed with the level of service and quality offered. The Danish pastries and croissants are very good too, if you fancy a spot of breakfast on the way to work. I had to shout out about Parisian as I think it is important to support local and friendly independents businesses.

The Little B - Trying local beer

The Little B is another of Sale's well known pubs that has gone through a number of different…read morestyles of decor, breweries and presumably managers over the years. In years gone by when Sale Sharks Rugby Union were based next door to the B (as it's known by locals), it was perfectly located for the pre- and post- match fans who didn't want to drink in the rugby club. But since the Sharks moved to Stockport, I can now see little that would draw customers to drink here, being as it is at least 25 minutes walk from Sale town centre and the rest of its 'nightspots' (and I use the term loosely!). This would perhaps explain the ever changing decor, range of beers, variety of food on offer and the multiple different themed nights that are hosted here. The B has it all, from quiz nights, a pool table, lots of screens for watching sporting events and the occasional live music act (the last one I saw there was a Billy Idol impersonator... unique!). There is a lot of seating, food priced from very cheap (less than a fiver) to more comprehensive meals (steaks etc) for around a tenner. A large terrace out the front of the pub with heaters under the umbrellas for smokers is a welcome facility on both warm and cold nights. There is also a large car park behind the pub. And yet, for all the features above, I have grown to dislike the B for some reason. It lacks any real atmosphere, and beyond a rather cliquey set of locals, it can feel quite unwelcoming to the occasional visitor. I've also suffered ill-effects from drinking draught beer there before, on more than one occasion which leads me to question their cleanliness (or at the very least, the quality of their beer). There is plenty to recommend the B, but also plenty to put me off it which is why for me it warrants only 2 stars.

I spent one of the most memorable days of my life in the Little B in Sale. My friend lived round…read morethe corner off Brooklands and it was in walking distance. Anyway, I had arrived the day before to stay the summer kickin it around Manchester with some awesome peeps, but I was denied entry into the country and was only allowed to stay for about 36 hours. So I had one full day and what would I do with it? I'd spend it in a PUB! How proper? My friend, Claire and I were lining up outside before it even opened around 11 am while my other friend went to fetch her boyfriend somewhere closer to Manchester! The double vodka-lime and lemonades began flowing and about 60 pound was spent on the Pub Quiz.....it wasn't like I needed the $2000 in my pocket for anyting else that day!! Was in the pub well into the afternoon and had a great day playing pool and hanging out! Thank you, Little B for showing me how fantastic the pub life of England could be! See you soon!

Sandwich shops are ten-a-penny in this city but if you, like me, are a bit barmy about your barms and picky about your pickles, then Mia's is without doubt where you should be headed. This is a family affair, owned by Mia and run by her and her sister Danielle. These fellow curly girls know how to make a butty! They pack your slices full of deliciously fresh meats with all the salad accompaniments you could desire. Cream cakes, custards and for the healthy, fresh fruit are available beside the counter to tempt your palate. Mia's sells the least expensively priced jacket potatoes( £1.80 with fillings) I have ever seen and I defy you to find cheaper in Manchester! Any shop which makes scrambled egg on toast just how I like it, does it for me. If you prefer a hot bacon bap then Mia's will comply. This local sandwich shop may not have all the pomp and circumstance of city centre eateries- all expensive uniforms, huge hairnets and Ciabatta- but what it does have is excellent portions, scrummy sandwiches and service with a smile. My only complaint is that it does not open long enough because who knows what time I will get a craving for a good old sausage barm?
