What a fun experience!!! I took an intro stained glass making class here. The teacher was friendly, there were lots of options for patterns to choose from, you could work at your own pace, and learn a new skill. The only notes I have are that the studio was very chilly, you are asked to purchase your own safety glasses (but could rent some for free if you ask), and I wish they had more color selection for the art project. Overall it was great though and I would recommend others to try!

Stained Glass Sun Catcher

We took the 3.5 hour Sun Catcher workshop with Greg and it was so great! Very informative every step of the way. We felt so empowered and capable do to his teaching. Already thinking of planning another session with friends! Thank you Greg!

Making stained glass was a fun date day (~3.5 hours for ~$50). I went with a group of ~6 and Greg was very friendly and knowledgeable. He has music playing throughout. He has ~10 designs to choose from (turtle, whale, lotus flower, sun, shamrock...). If you go once, you can bring your own design the next time. He starts with some practice glass showing you the proper way to cut glass and break it with the proper tools. Then he lets you choose from the basic colors of the rainbow - ask if you don't see a color and he'll grab you some more from the back. You cut out pieces from the colored glass and then use the grinder to shape up the edges. After that, you use copper to line the edges and then a soldering iron to mold the pieces together. He'll help you with any parts you are having trouble with and will touch up your work. He then puts a little hanging part on it and you're ready to go. You sign a waiver before you start - he noted that it was my choice to continue to do it if I was pregnant (I obviously was) since there was lead in the studio. Also waiver said closed toe shoes (I was wearing flip flops), but I didn't feel any part of it was dangerous or risky. There was no dust or anything in the studio. I think he was more worried if I cut myself (the cutters you use are very safe, and grinder doesn't seem like it can hurt you either; the only danger I saw was if you burned yourself with solder iron). I was a bit hesitant to go after I saw location near Bridge & Pratt in Frankford since area isn't known to be the best, but he's located in a dead end with plenty of parking, so it didn't feel unsafe.

My wife went for the one day workshop offered by Greg Stefan Studios and this is her summary: 1) Great value. Even better if you luck out and buy the living social promotion before it ends. 2) Workshop was clean and organized (Neighborhood is so-so but plenty of parking right out front). Greg was very friendly, talented, and helpful. 3) You learn a lot, have fun, and leave with a small piece you cut, sanded, foiled, and soldered yourself! 4) Pieces he had displayed in the studio were gorgeous. 5) Small touches like offering bottled water and flexible workshop times made this a standout experience. 6) Greg offers a 10 week course if you wish to continue learning stained glass and complete a bigger project. Overall, it was a great experience. Check it out!

A friend and I purchased the amazon local deal and we are so glad we did. There was some shuffling with the scheduling, which was really not an issue, things happen. We finally got to get into the studio last night. The review written below by Josh S. and his wife is really on-point. I agree with everything listed but I'll try to not be a copycat. We had a great night with a class of about 6 people. Greg was patient, friendly, encouraging and motivating. You can tell how much he enjoys teaching. He's a great people person and we had a really fun group. One of the older people in the class dropped hers after cutting everything and was really upset. Greg helped her get back on track and gave her all new glass to start with. That was surely out of his own pocket but he wasn't having anyone leave upset! I love the star I made and my friend loved what she made as well. I would consider going back just to be able to do it all again, maybe making something for someone as a gift next time instead of for myself. I do wish that I had known that using clear glass meant the gold foil would show on the edges; I would've chosen a different color. That said, I can use it to show people how I did it. :) If you're on the fence, just do it. It was so fun!

Although you wouldn't know from the outside, the space is amazing-colorful, bright, inviting and lends itself to the creative mind. There are multiple large rooms that can each accommodate maybe 15? people (due to the equipment) with sinks for cleaning everything off at the end. The instructor started off a little dry but ended up really engaging everyone and the entire group seemed to have a great time. We had a one hour session and, after getting setup with an apron and a clay working station, we got to choose what basic item we wanted to make, got guidance throughout the process, decorated our creations and decided on the color for the pros to add on after the fact. Items are fired/cured and picked up in several weeks. It was a great, chill way to spend a weekend morning and I'm looking forward to bringing my treasure home in a few weeks.

The instructor was super nice and helpful--he guided us step by step through the whole process. After shaping our clay, he torched it and let us decorate with a variety of cute stamps (so many to choose from!). He even helped us take photos after the class, which was a nice touch. We each ended up making a flower vase and a bowl. Just a heads-up: you'll need to wait about 30 days to pick up your finished pieces since they need time to be fired, glazed, and properly dried. Overall, it was a fantastic experience--fun, relaxing, and very beginner-friendly. Highly recommend it if you're looking for a unique activity in Philly! The class was about 2 hours long and totally worth it. Bonus: there's plenty of parking out front and along the main road.
