I brought my daughter to this dental office to complete her exam, cleaning, and X-rays as required…read morepreparation for an upcoming orthodontic referral. I provided her active, dental insurance (BlueCross BlueShield) before the appointment began. The staff reviewed the card and told me it would be covered. At no point was I told that her insurance plan had a $500 deductible or that I could be responsible for payment out-of-pocket. I was not given a cost estimate or even informed that there was any potential for a balance. Had I known, I would have made a different decision and postponed the visit until I had confirmation of what would and wouldn't be covered. After the appointment, I was unexpectedly handed a bill for $446 and told that insurance wouldn't pay because the services fell under the deductible. When I asked why I wasn't told this earlier, the response was that it "falls on me" as the responsible party because my daughter resides with me a comment that was both incorrect and highly offensive. For context: Her father is responsible for carrying dental insurance for her which he does. I provided the valid insurance information in advance, just as I was supposed to. I was never informed that I would be financially responsible due to the deductible or that insurance wouldn't be billed. What made this situation worse was that I later confirmed they never submitted a claim to the insurance at all. Regardless of whether the deductible applies, providers are still required to submit the claim to: Apply contracted, discounted insurance rates Ensure the balance is applied to the deductible record Keep accurate records for future orthodontic referrals Because they skipped this step, I was left with a full-priced bill with no insurance adjustment even though we had valid coverage. To top it off, the bill was printed with my daughter's father's name and address, despite me being the one who provided all the information and was present during the appointment. Yet somehow, I'm the one handed the bill without warning or consent. I asked for a copy of the bill to take with me and she did not want to give me a copy at first. Then, told me I had to sign it before she would even give me a copy of my own bill so I was forced to sign without disclosures. I did everything correctly I brought her in with valid insurance, confirmed with staff in advance, and followed all necessary steps to prepare her for braces. I was misled about coverage, blindsided by a large bill, and spoken to in a dismissive, inappropriate way when I tried to advocate for myself and my daughter. I would not recommend this office to any parent. The lack of clear communication, failure to follow basic billing practices, and the inappropriate blame placed on me as a parent who was trying to do the right thing all of it reflects a lack of professionalism and accountability that no family should have to experience. No Surprises Act (2022) -- providers are required to: Give advance written notice of costs before treatment Disclose if something won't be covered Offer a Good Faith Estimate if there's any chance you'd be billed directly Under Texas Occupations Code § 258.051, dental providers must: "Inform the patient of the estimated cost of dental care before providing treatment." As you can see in the photo of the bill, there is no indication whatsoever that an insurance claim was submitted. There's no claim number, no insurance adjustment, no breakdown of what was billed to BlueCross, and no patient responsibility calculated from an actual insurance determination. You told me the balance was due because of a deductible, but I was never shown an Explanation of Benefits, and your bill shows absolutely no trace of insurance involvement just a full charge dumped entirely on me. That strongly suggests that no claim was submitted, which violates your duty as a provider accepting insurance and misrepresents the financial responsibility I was told I would have. Until a proper claim is submitted and an EOB is provided, I have a picture on Google map reviews.
