Peck Lake Park is located south of the St. Lucie Inlet. When you drive in to the park there is a…read morepaved loop road lined with picnic pavilions and grills. There is also a restroom. At the back of the loop is a hiking trail that leads you through mangroves to the intracoastal waterway which runs between the park and the Hobe Sound Wildlife Refuge. The walk is about 15 minutes each way. Part of the path is gravel and part of it is an elevated wooden boardwalk that takes you over the wetlands. The 1/2 mile trail takes you through mesic flat woods, hard woods, mangrove swamps., and brackish slough. You cross over a spoil island that was created from the dredging of the intracoastal. There are interpretive signs along the way providing information on the Ais who were the Native people in this area thousands of years ago, and the plants and animals in the park. The park is a good place to spot birds during the spring and fall migration. You can find American Redstarts and Common Yellowthroats and Spotted Sandpipers along the shore in the winter.

We were able to catch 3 decent sized snapper that we kept. The crew were marking the fish so that everyone would be able to claim their fish at the end of the trip. When we got to the dock, there was no kind of order to be able to retrieve our fish. The staff of the boat put all of the fish out to take pictures (I guess for promotional purposes/advertising). But then, people started taking fish. By the time I could ask for our fish, they had been given away. All we were told was "sorry". Needless to say, we were not happy about the experience.

John was patient with me as I struggled to battle my adrenaline rushes as we cast to snook along seawalls, under docks and on the rocks at the inlet. He put me onto my first Tarpon on the first night within the first hour. This guy has no big ego and is all business. I had expressed an interest in catching and releasing as many species as possible during my trip and he never forgot the plan. In an off tide day we still managed to land Snook, Tarpon, Jack Crevalle , Bonita, Mackerel and even a funky Catfish with a massive dorsal fin. We tried hard for the Sea Trout and Blue Runners but they will have to wait for next time. He let me use my own rod and reel without huffing and puffing. Again, no ego or lecture about losing fish due to my poor casting or whatever. Contrast this to the hot shot guides that make you feel like an amateur with all their blustering when you make a little mistake or two. After all, we are out to have fun. All fish were released with lots of care for the health of the fish when taking photos etc. I will be back with a friend to log more time on the water with this guy in the spring.
