They claim to be Aborists but it is almost as if they have no training on how to trim a "palm tree" at all. Granted they worked hard, but the owrkers do not know any better. It looks like some amatuers came through and over trimmed an entire neighborhood and left just a few palms standing up on top of each palm tree, which any aborist will tell you is not good. Palm trees are different from Deciduous and Coniferous trees. Older fronds provide nutrients as they go to yellow then brown. When trimming, you are to leave anything at or above 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock alone. Not only do these older fronds continue to provide sustenance for the new fronds, but as they wilt, they pull the base of the frond away from the tree, creating space for the tree to expand and grow as thick as the stump below it. By ridiculously over cutting, these palms are now "growth interrupted", and will never grow out properly. The tree is not going to get much taller, and any additional height will be string bean thin at the top. Now most people giving good reviews have no idea how palms grow and are just happy they will not have to deal with the palms for a few years, because it has been so over trimmed! They are conditioned to see these over trimmed palms as "neatly trimmed" when actually the growth is being permanantly stunted, and the top of the tree will stay thin, because cutting the young fronds to soon stops the expansion and strangles the neck of the tree. Normal trees will grow back if you cut below the "branches and leaves line". Did you know if you cut the top leaves completely off of any palm tree, it dies.....we all see a very tall stump on occasion....it is from over cutting. read more

We had a tree that was not trimmed as well as we had hoped by another company a few weeks ago. A week later, we received a flyer from Green Topps, soliciting work in our North Port subdivision, so I called and made an appointment for somebody to come by and discuss the situation. They told me up front what is their minimal charge for service so I wouldn't waste their time or mine, hoping for low price quote or estimate. When their rep Brendan Duffy arrived at the appointed time, he was quick to point out that what I was suggesting, was about half of their minimal charge and made no mention of doing more than necessary to meet the minimum. I asked about another tree that I thought might need some work and he was honest enough to suggest waiting a few years to work on it, even though he could have combined the touch up work on both trees to meet the minimum service charge. He is an accredited arborist and pointed out several mistakes that had been made by previous tree trimmers over the years while telling me what he would do in the future, but again, did not pressure me to agree to to hiring his company. Brendan's honesty and professionalism was unexpected and most appreciated. I asked for several business cards to give to neighbors, one of whom desperately needs his trees trimmed and salvaged from previous tree hackers. read more

Excellent job well done, price was good and fair. This was a big job, trimmed all my palms,hedges around my pool area, plus fertilizer them, removed an old bush which was dead. The job consist of five workers, a chipper and a long arm bucket for the worker to reach my neighbors oak tree that was over my property line. Unfortunately that was included in the price..Last time I trimmed that oak tree is was over my roof and hitting my skylight..The guys did a great job over three hours. We are brand new to the Venice area and purchased a home that looked like a jungle from the overgrown landscaping, to include a huge, overgrown live oak right in the front of the property. After meeting with multiple landscape companies to receive estimates to have the live oak trimmed back, tear out of the existing landscape and start anew, we chose GreenTopps. Steve created a beautiful design of new palms and plants for the 3 existing beds that not only accented our home, but gave us beautiful street appeal. Steve's 5-man crew showed up on time for the 4-day project and we were impressed to find out that each member specialized in certain areas of the project. The crew worked hard and diligently until 5 pm each day and the job site was left meticulously clean. The tear out of the existing landscape went smoothly and they did an awesome job removing and grinding down the existing stumps from the various overgrown trees and removing all the crazy root systems that went everywhere. The huge, live oak looks spectacular and is now the talk of the Venice Golf & Country Club as having the most beautiful tree in the neighborhood. The crew member didn't just hack off the branches and be done with it, as we witnessed soon thereafter. He shaped the tree and it is stunning! After seeing the beautiful work on our tree, our neighbor had recently used a large known landscape company to trim his live oak and called them back to fix their job. All they did was cut off another large limb, which fell on our brand new triple palm and broke it. Of course our neighbor's landscaping company didn't care and accepted no liability for the damages, but our neighbor has graciously offered to replace our palm. GreenTopps brought in dirt and layered my beds and used our existing large rocks to accent them. The plants and palms that were brought in were all of good quality. GreenTopps also worked alongside our existing irrigation contractor to ensure that the irrigation was set up correctly. Our irrigation contractor was so impressed with their work that he took a stack of their business cards for referrals. In one week, we have had numerous compliments on our yard and have had two people give GreenTopps a call for future work - to include our neighbor! Hired Steve to clear our vacant lot next door. He was to clean it up and level it for us. His crew was there for approx. 4 hours. Brush hogged all the evasive plants and left. The lot was a mess. Didn't hear back about leveling the lot and finishing the job for a month. When we finally heard from him, he wanted more money to finish the job. He was already paid $2,000. So his work cost us about $500.00 an hour. Complete "rip off". Didn't get him back. read more
