Pittsburgh City Paper - The Drink Issue - 11/15/17

I like scrolling through the paper occasionally and it's a great(probably the best) single source…read moreof info for local happenings and reviews. However, the "Best in the City" issue???, c'mon! Burgatory-best burger...lol! The Clarks and Joe Grusheky as 1 and 2 Best Rock performance... what a joke. Who did you ask about these "Best of", your 55 year old yinzer uncle? Your Aunt Peg? On another note, Twelve Whiskey BBQ kicks the shit out of all the BBQ joints on their list.

Alright, let me dispense with the caveats first. For each of these, I must deduct 1/4 of a star…read more.. 1-Dan Savage is a jackass who doles out irresponsible advice on purpose. His sexual orientation doesn't bug me (Rob Halford and Freddie Mercury are among my heroes), but it's ALL he's about. The man was for the bombing of Iraq simply because he thinks Arabs are all homophobes! He epitomizes "liberal" elitism (he censored a radical friend of mine in a Seattle newspaper he worked for called The Stranger, long story). I prefer radical populism. Put that in yer latte and sip on it. 2-They try WAY too hard to be hip and edgy. Maybe it's because hipsters annoy me since their whole existence is one long fashion statement and because you can never tell what their true interests or convictions are, not to mention that they're all spoiled, rich white kids. Please don't get me started on those people. Anyway, this magazine panders to them way too much. It's almost laughable, really. Irony is not the alpha and omega of life, ok? 3-They assume everyone reading has or is pursuing a Master's degree. 4-The back pages are pure SLEAZE! I always flip past those sex ads. Gimme a break! I don't want an escort or a massage! I couldn't care less about alternative lifestyles! On the other hand, what other Pittsburgh paper has articles about the POG/Thomas Merton Center schism, local mountaintop removal activists, Lawrenceville residents using alternative fuels that actually work, lesbian boxers, prisoners serving life terms, suburban sprawl, environmental racism in the Hill District, renewal efforts in neighborhoods like Hazelwood, and gentrification among many other issues? They don't urinate on or ignore comic books and heavy metal music either. It was through The City Paper that I discovered "Street Angel" from local comics creators Jim Rugg and Brian Maruca and Pittsburgh metal acts like Hero Destroyed, Storm King, Mantic Ritual, Lady Beast, and Magic Wolf. As someone with a minor interest in astrology (I'm an Aquarian if you didn't figure that out already), I think they have the best astrology column around. I often flip to that section first. Ok, I lied. What I actually do first is turn the paper over to the back cover to see if there's a hot chick in an American Apparel ad. Their food critic duo is pretty good as well. I especially applaud them for venturing beyond the East End. We do have good food in the South Hills. Don't be skeered to come aht 'ere. So they have a fine periodical. I'd just like to see a little bit more of a populist slant from them.
