Great park with a Greenway and lots of walking trails around it. There are six patio tables by the playground perfect for a picnic or snack time with family and friends. It's very clean too! Not a ton of shade at the playground but there's shaded patio tables nearby too if you're worried about too much sun. read more

After visiting the current landfill earlier this month. I decided to visit a former landfill. Green Hills County Park is on the land that was used as a landfill to 2008. In 2010 it was been transformed to a park and you can climb the hill to get to the top of the landfill to see view of Wake Forest and Downtown Raleigh. If you look closely you can see how much the landfill has shrunk from 2008 as there is a white line on a pipe. The gas produced from the landfill goes to a nearby pharmaceutical company and that company provides nitrogen for the park. Along the walk up the gravel trail to the top there are pictures of items and on the back it tells you how long it takes for them item to break down. A tin can will take about 50 years to break down and plastic jugs were a million years to break down. Plastic water bottles can take 450 years to break down. So many items in the landfill could have been recycled so learning those numbers makes me rethink how much trash I am producing. You can drive around the hill in one direction as one lane is for bicycles and pedestrians and the other for vehicles. There is a playground; a shelter and restrooms available. This is a nice park and I will return and walk more tails. read more

What happens when you turn a dump into a park? You get this wonderful place. Green Hills County Park is a gem. You can hike or bike around the base of the landfill. It is over 1 mile and is protected from vehicles by a curb. You can walk or ride without worrying about a vehicle striking you. This is a bonus. Hike up to the top of the landfill and you have 360° views of Wake County and beyond. Benches are provided on the top so you can have a seat and enjoy the views. There are paths throughout the park that are also good for hiking and biking. Plenary of parking and always good to get out on the fresh air and enjoy the outdoors. read more

We decided to go and take a look at this park since it claims to be the highest point in Wake County and it was such a beautiful day for February. Finding the park required GPS, there weren't many signs tHat I saw, and after passing the county dump there was a parking lot that we assumed was for the park. It was not very clearly marked exactly WHERE you needed to go to in order to get to the highest point, but luckily there was another park goer that had been there before and directed us. It was a breezy day, and there were a couple times the smell from the dump wafted over, but luckily it wasn't that bad. After a fairly steep climb for my out of shape body we reached the top. It was pretty enough, but slightly anticlimactic. Although the view was amazing on such a beautiful day I felt like there shoulld be more up there. After walking back to the car we decided to drive around the park, which essentially is a huge hill and check out the playground. There is a separate parking lot on the other side of the hill that makes this part of the park more accessible. It looked enjoyable and I was surprised that the bathrooms were so clean. The toilets are stainless steel metal which I thought was interesting. Overall, it was an enjoyable time and I'm glad we checked it out! It was tHe right time, the right weather and the right company to experience Green Hill. read more

This is a nice little park to visit. The landfill closed years ago, so you don't have to worry about all of the trash trucks. There is a nice little trail to walk around, playground area for kids, and a picnic area. There is also a little bicycle trick area for you. There are a couple of hills that you can climb for a stunning view. Ok, maybe not as a stunning as the Blue Ridge Mountains, but still nice. They do lock the gates at night, and there are signs up that say they are open at 8AM, but don't believe the signs. I have been there plenty of times at 10AM and the gates were still locked. The trails can go in a circle, or a walk around the neighborhood. read more

Miles and miles of paved biking/walking trails, off road mountain biking courses, and free park. It's secluded from the city, you're surrounded by wide open nature when you're at the park. I love biking to the park from my house and doing a calisthenics workout. The vibes are amazing, even when the park is busy people are respectful of my space and other bikers always smile and wave. A great place full of community. Can't recommend it more. read more

I have had this Park bookmarked for sometime and finally had the opportunity to visit it today. It is tucked away in North Raleigh, off Durant road, adjacent to the county dump. A major downside. (especially in the Summer I am guessing) Fortunately for us, and our olfactory glands, we checked it out on a beautiful winter day. There is ample parking and a two lane paved road; bike/walking, car, that travels around a HUGE hill. We were told the loop totals 1 mile. 3/4 around, there is a small playground, public restrooms, and a covered patio area. 1/2 way around, there is an alternate path. Bring your oxygen tank for the uphill traverse! The climb was worth the calorie output. The summit is reputed to be the highest point in Wake county and the panoramic vista is breathtaking. We were able to see Raleigh's skyline and Wake Forest's water tower. It is worth exploring but I would be hesitant to do so when the mercury is north of 75 degrees! read more

Discovered this park after noticing that a new elementary school and park is being built off Durant. It's somewhat hidden behind the solid waste drop-off, but if you stay to the right and follow the signs that say "Park", you'll find it. I believe this park is more for mountain biking as I saw a lot of that going on in the woods and on the visible trails, but there is also a little playground. No grilling here as I assume there might be a little methane in the area still. The best part about this place it the hill in the center of the park. It's got a great 360 view of the whole Raleigh area and, from what I could tell, might be the highest point in sight. In short, it's a nice, quiet and private park with a hell of a view. read more

This place is fantastic. I found it when looking for places to run in North Raleigh. I used to frequent Shelley Lake, but since moving farther north, I've been searching for something closer by. Note: if you have kids, the play areas look like a lot of fun! If you like to run hills, you'll find the main landfill run to be challenging and rewarding. When you get to the top, you'll have a beautiful view. There can be a lot of crickets on your way up, but as long as you keep your mouth closed and run fast, you'll be alright. :) I also enjoy running around where the mountain bike trails are. There is hardly anyone on the circular path which is about a mile, and it's a nice little jog to loop around a few times. There is just the right amount of hilly-ness to keep me happy, and you can always run the landfill hill if you want to elevate the heart rate more. I would call this place one of my "special places." I was hesitant knowing that it was previously a landfill which sounded a little unappealing, but it's one of the most peaceful places I've found in North Raleigh with one of the best views of the city I've seen. read more

This park is tucked away behind what use to be a giant landfill hill and is never packed with people are kids. You can get to the park by either driving around the hill or walking the greenway path through Falls River/Bedford. The park has a small set for children under 5 and a bigger set for kids over five. But the pièce de résistance is the giant spider web contraption that is attached to the bigger play area. My son is 4 and loves climbing this thing. My daughter is two and attempts to climb but can't without a lot of help (mommy or daddy holding her). There is also a big field adjacent to the play area that is great for kicking a ball around or throwing a football or just letting the kids run nilly willy. Park is clean, bathrooms are clean, all in all a great place to hang with the kids. Especially if you don't want a crowd. read more

This park puzzled me. I drove in and there was parking on the right but no signs saying where the path or trails were. So I drove further into the park and parked where the restroom and playground was. I still didn't see any signs where the paths were or how long they were. This park was a real disappointment. I'm used to running at Shelly Lake, Lake Lynn, Lake Johnson and Durant Park. All of these have paths marked and miles written. I don't think I'll be returning here unless someone explains the particulars to me. read more

Great open and sunny playground for the kids. It's perfect for those nice winter days when it's just warm enough to be outside but you also need that sun shining on you to keep the chill away. They have a large parking lot, public bathroom, and water fountain that are usually kept pretty clean. Would definitely recommend this playground. read more

There aren't many signs explaining where things are, which is nice because I guess that deters the people complaining about the lack of signs away. It's a very nice place to run and I usually go just about every day! The view from the top of the hill is surprisingly very good, especially in the fall. You can see downtown Raleigh from the top. read more

It's a big pile of garbage that they great grass on! What's not to love? You can walk around it. You can bike around it. You can use the restroom at the far side of it. It's the highest point in Raleigh. There is no share if you hike to the top. Just be aware of that. If you haven't gone, put it on your list. Ya know, when it's cooled down a bit. It's pretty hot right now. Wait until autumn. It'll be better then. read more

Great park with fun equipment to play on! It also has a big hill that you can walk down, which our son loves!
