Run by two brothers, you can probably find just about anything you're looking for here if you forgot it at the grocery store. Some examples of products they sell that completely saved my ass: fuses, cork screws, gravol, pepto bismol, and some fresh produce! They also do cash back which was SO convenient. They also make some really tasty sandwiches and salads, when I would get lazy for lunch I'd walk over and grab a chicken salad sandwich and a bowl of soup. If that isn't enough to make you check this place out, they also have movies to rent. The staff are friendly and always willing to help. It was very rare that I wasn't able to find what I was looking for. I'd say the only advantage of living at the apartment building I lived in was being able to come here.

Abbas Grocery is a great little convenience store for those in the neighbourhood. I was greeted by…read moreone of the Abbas brothers (Radi) and he was very friendly and welcoming. The store is clean and has a good selection of products. I have an unusual fascination with small independently-owned convenience stores, so I like checking them out. I especially like finding some prepared foods in these types of stores, as they are usually made with love. I had heard that Abbas Grocery had good sandwiches so I was excited to check them out. I was expecting paninis but the sandwiches are in fact sandwich bread sandwiches (like Wonder Bread) in comfort food varieties such as tuna, egg salad and ham and cheese. Radi assured me the sandwiches are freshly made each morning. The ham and cheese sandwich was around $4.49 and it did have a generous amount of ham, but it did look like something I could put together at home (sandwich bread, a slice of processed cheese and some slices of ham), so I passed. They had a few slices of cheesecake and I asked where they were from. I thought maybe a local baker, but was advised they were from a distributor in Montreal. I didn't end up getting anything, but enjoyed looking around. I can tell that the owners take pride in their store. Prices are reasonable and Radi was very nice. If I lived in the neighbourhood and needed convenience store items, I would definitely go to Abbas Grocery.

The store is being renovate, and it's becoming more Loblaws-esque. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I will take time to get used to the changes. On the plus side of the ledger, they now stock wine & beer (though it's till under the foolish Ontario rules - as someone who grew up in Montreal, I don't understand puritan Ontario, but that's another rant) Well stocked, good prices, price matching (which is a great thing unless I am in line behind you and you've got a long list of things to match ;) ) and walking distance from home make this a fine grocery store.

Self checkout is limited to 25 items- what difference does a cashier make vs self checkout? So was forced to go to a cashier, and she kept hitting the conveyer button on me as in trying to load my paid for groceries, even though there was an empty belt next to me. I got frustrated and had to ask her to stop as she was destroying my bread. If you're going to force me to go to a cashier, maybe make sure they have patience. Otherwise let me bag my own stuff in piece at a self checkout. Somehow they manage to stock basic groceries and keep prices reasonable, at least on store brands, while catering to organic/vegetarian/locavore/gluten-free/ethnic tastes. I am very picky about fruit and veg and MG meets the mark in terms of quality and variety. The cheese and dairy section is well stocked and I always enjoy my stroll down the breads/bakery/deli section. The best/most surprising part of MG is that the staff are really attentive and well trained. They make eye contact, have a bit of chat, and get the job done. More impressive is the fact that because this dinky store doesn't have room for you to push the Lilliputian carts past the cashiers' stands, you are instructed to push them back out into the aisle (by the chocolate bars). Somehow, there is always a staffer there to collect them and the practice does not vex folks waiting in line behind. (Also, they tend to open enough cash registers to keep lines quite short.) As a bonus, there is a produce lady with a beautiful voice. If you're lucky, you'll come by while she's belting out a few tunes.

We first saw…read morethis grocery/convenience store on the way to buying books and coursepacks at Haven Books, which is directly across the street. We mainly took notice because of their big "Free Delivery" sign. We asked the man at the counter for more information. He asked us if we went to Carleton and lived in residence, and we said yes, so he told us that after we were finished shopping around, that he'd drive us back to campus with all of our groceries. I've had some friends go to the store and have been told that they don't deliver, so I'm assuming that they probably only deliver within a very small radius, Carleton campus included. If my friend and I were just lucky that day and the man was feeling extra nice, then we were definitely very appreciative. The store is very small, though they did have many of your basic needs, like milk, bread, and some produce. My friend and I did a bit of our grocery shopping together, including milk, juice, bread, cream cheese, hot dogs, bananas, a couple of chocolate bars, and a few other miscellaneous items. The prices were higher than you would expect to pay at your average grocery store, but cheaper than you would normally pay at a convenience store. The man and what we assumed to be his wife that ran the store were very nice and accommodating. We didn't come here too often, though, as we did more bulk shopping at the Loblaws via O-Train, but it was nice to know a store like this was (still is) very close to campus.

How awesome is that? Winter is coming and it would be sweet to find a place that would save me from having to venture out on those evenings when the temperature falls below negative 20 below! So, I went in and asked the owner about the delivery service. Sadly, they do NOT deliver. But, they haven't been able to afford to buy a new sign. Dang! Nevertheless, I took a look around while I was there and found the Groceteria to be a handy little place. It has everything a good convenience store offers (chips, pop, cigarettes, magazines, etc.). Plus, it has a small produce section where you can get some fruits and vegetables (bananas, apples, tomatoes). The owners are of Indian (or at least, Indian Sub-Continent) descent, and they offer a selection of big, homemade samosas. It is a friendly store, where everyone seems to know everyone else. Pity about the delivery....!

My first visit to a Whole Foods Market was years ago, after completing a job interview in Yorkville…read morein Toronto. I definitely remember what I got: a slice of tiramisu. At that time, it was the only Whole Foods in the greater Toronto area. Whole Foods has grown on me, likely because Markham has one and I frequent it often. I don't fit the profile of a typical Whole Foods shopper who tends to carry expensive handbags, must get everything organic, and can afford all things expensive, including tiny bottles of elixirs that extend their years on planet Earth. I like their dairy-free items. I love Carbonaut bread and the entire bakery section, including tiramisu. There are specific items that I get at this store. If I'm looking for romaine lettuce or celery, you'll likely see me at a grocery store that offers these items at normal, cheaper prices. Four years ago, I was in the Glebe and saw this Whole Foods store. I didn't go in. I had already got what I needed at a Metro. On my most recent visit, after spending a few hours exploring the area with a friend, I realized that I needed almond beverage and lemons. I had yet to set foot in any grocery store. They were good reasons to check this store out. I had parked underground. The elevator got me to this store. I exited the elevator on the main floor to hit Winners. This store has a cafe that occupies the entire floor. It was busy just before noon. People must love getting coffee and a baked good here. When I returned just past 5 pm, you could hear crickets on this floor. The cafe was closed. It was different. My local one is still open when I'm there at 7 pm. I have yet to hit the cafe at any Whole Foods location. I took the escalator up to the second floor, which is where the entire supermarket is. I immediately found almond beverage. Organic. Sugar-free. Perfect. I also found the produce area. The Rainier cherries looked good. They were also so expensive that I blocked the price out and moved on. I got a couple of lemons. You could get a bag of six. The price was the same if you calculated how much one lemon was going for, so you might as well pick your own pristine-looking lemons. I looked around. It has the usual salad and hot food bars. You pay by weight, which does add up if you aren't careful. There were lots of snacks and drinks to choose from. A can of flavoured carbonated water was going for $2.69. It makes you wonder how this store determines the prices that it sets. It was enjoyable looking at the plants and flowers. It's a nice grocery store. I had an equally nice woman at the checkout area. I paid for my items with a debit card. I didn't need a bag. My lemons were already in one, so I carried it and my carton of almond beverage to the elevator. It was convenient taking the elevator down to the underground parking lot. I walked to my car, paid for parking, and left. The lemons and almond beverage were great. I'm glad that I got what I needed at this store. I had a fun time shopping here. It's my second Whole Foods that I've been to where it has two floors. We'll see if I return in another four years. Maybe I'll try the cafe... haha! (262)
