Took the family there for a last night of holiday dinner. Went in on speck and got a table. Good…read moremenu with lots of choice and daily specials too. They do a roast dinner everyday which was fantastic and big. Children's roast was big enough to for a hungry 10year old and the Ham egg and chips was perfect. Puddings were equally good, very traditional "duff and custard". Don't order until you are ready to eat because the food arrives moments after you get back to your table. Great value too. 2adult mains, 2 kids mains, 4 adult puddings, 4 soft drinks and two pints of 1664 only £52.

As we were going for a ride on the Wensleydale Railway and we were early for the train we thoiught…read morewe would seek out some lunch. The first place we came across was The White Rose who proudly proclaimed that they did a carvery and that was enough for my partner to be happy. We parked in the car park and noted that it wasn't particularly busy. Inside the pub has been modernised and re-decorated and looked very nice. The pub was fairly quiet which surprised me. The girl behind the bar was smiling and cheerful and greeted us warmly. We ordered three carveries (without viewing the rest of the menu) and a pint of beer and two cokes came to a little over £30. We picked a place to sit which wasn't difficult as there were only about 6 people in the main pub area and about the same in the bright airy conservatory. Then we went to the carvery. There was a choice of beef, turkey and gammon and the server was happy for us to have more than one of the meats. He then asked if we wanted Yorkshires and stuffing and then we helped ourselves to the veg and gravy and sauces. There was a good selection of veg including carrots, cauliflower cheese and mashed swede. We sat back down and that's when I had a bit of an accident. The tables were too close to the bench seating so I tried to move it a bit and my drink spilled all over. The male staff member, possibly the landlord, quickly got a mop and cleared up the spilt liquid politely but without humour and didn't try to put us at our ease. I explained what had happened. He didn't comment. We discovered the veg were lukewarm. The meats were okay although my beef was a bit grisly. Nice enough meal but nothing terribly exciting. My daughter then had the most expensive dessert on the menu, chocolate scrapheap, which was like a brownie with bits of maltesers, dime bars etc in it. It looked lovely but was very dry and quite tasteless. There was nothing with it ie ice cream, cream or custard to moisten it a bit. The bit I was most surprised at though was that it contained nuts and there was nothing on the menu to indicate this. No problem to us but it could have had consequences for others. At £4.25 it was definitely overpriced. I wouldn't make a beeline for the place again but I wouldn't avoid it like the plague either.

Beautiful hotel, beautiful location…read more We were there for one night for my boyfriends birthday. Staff seemed disorganised. Forgot that we were guests and were reluctant to give us a place in the restaurant for dinner they squeezed us in near the bar. They then forgot to serve us.. and we had to remind them we were sitting there. We ate quite late and were one of the last there. We were made to feel out of place, like an inconvenience to them. We were just quietly trying to enjoy our evening. I asked them to put a candle into Chris's pudding for his birthday - they were obliging and looked a little apologetic even more so when we showed our room key and asked for the bill to be added to our room. We weren't treated very well as guests, and service was very disorganised We still enjoyed our stay though, because although the evening was a little ruined - the food was still okay, and the bedroom and hotel in general was very lovely.

I love this pub. just don't try to bring outside food here! they make fish and chips on thursdays…read more(?) delish.
