Ok, let me begin by saying thanks to Elin Hilderbrand for basing all of her books in Nantucket & mentioning Great Point. Wow! It is a a day trip that you want to take. I'm so glad that my husband rented a Jeep - the sand 4 wheelin was so much fun and the surrounding beaches and Coskata were so beautiful & tranquil. The crew at the gate house entrance to the point are so helpful - gauges & info on tire pressure, maps & air hoses right outside the exit on the way home.
Now, to the point. Exactly what you imagine the ideal beach & lighthouse location to be. It was a nice, slow, scenic drive to the stopping point for autos. Beaches and wildlife are protected so we made the 3 mile round trip walk to the light house. Seals were swimming along the Ocean side. The lighthouse is a piece of sea weathered beauty. There was a seal lying on shore when we reached the roped off beach -thought it was injured, but it was waiting on a friend/mate.
Don't be disappointed that you can't walk to the point - seals, beaches and wildlife are protected. There is plenty to enjoy! Pack a few sandwiches, beach chairs and spend the day. We didn't even go into the water (mid June) and still enjoyed every moment. Not to be missed! read more
