To add to what the above reviewer Amy P has said, 'Go Outdoors' ' building does little to inspire…read morethe potential outdoor enthusiast, however some absolute bargains can be found, precisely because they can shift large volumes of goods. It is especially good for those on a tight budget, and I believe that family camping costs should be kept down. Originally called "Mitchells', 'Go Outdoors' is situated on the outskirts of Wakefield near to the National Mining Museum on the way to Huddersfield. The business and building was bought by Go Outdoors some 7 years ago and has thankfully improved vastly, with fresher product ranges and a fresher image although sadly trailer tents are no longer on display. A large outdoor grassed section enables tents to be demoed realistically, allowing the potential purchaser to just see exactly what a particular tent will feel like when they actually erect it and to see plain as day just what they will be getting for their money. From cheap festival tents to budget family tents that will sleep 5, to high performance technical tents for expedition and mountaineering use you will find a lot here. Inside there is a large range of clothing, hiking boots and equipment, rucksacks, sleeping bags etc etc as well as camp-craft products. There is everything you will ever need in here, from caravanning products to festival essentials. Big, reliable and 'designer' walking and tent brands are available at discount prices if you make a small investment in the form of a yearly-renewable membership card costing the princely sum of a whole english £4. It's worthwhile if you intend to buy a range of items in one go or intend to shop regularly here. There is also a 'Go Outdoors' own brand which is suited to those on a budget. I managed to grab an own-branded 'Gobi 4' 2 season tent in a sale which was an absolute bargain given its construction and features. The features of the tent would have been seen on a higher priced tent costing 4 times as much a few years ago such as blanket flooring, sealed seams and mud flaps. Although only a tent at the end of the day, it manages to make the camping experience just that little bit better. The quality of stitching and materials was superb and if you wait till the end of the season you can pick it up for 100 notes. I would definitely recommend this place as the own-branded -'Hi-gear' is pretty good value for the money. I've not had any problems when selecting some walking boots as the attendants did seem well-trained and knowledgable without ever being condescending or overtly 'selling.' I'd definitely recommend this place. It could benefit perhaps from a small cafe to allow people to discuss potential purchases and a bit more light towards the rear of the building, but then again this building has been here for over 40 years now.

I like it when shops go all-out with their displays! The entrance area is dedicated mainly to rucksacks...but it's downstairs where the fun starts! (There is a lift for wheelchair access). Downstairs is a huge open space with different areas helpfully signposted in Flintstones-esque type on giant wooden boards. There is a tent area with a small group of erected tents and nearby the sleeping bag area features a mannequin trying to catch forty winks while shoppers pass. They really do love their mannequin displays in Cotswold! If you're the kind of person who gets slightly creeped out having apologised after backing into someone, only to see a blank shiny plastic face staring back...then beware! There is a wide range of products here from waterproof climbing attire and ice axes to plastic crockery, kids' wellies and baby carriers. It's great for climbers, skiers, snowboarders, campers, hikers or just general travelers -it even includes a sizable section dedicated to travel books. I'd say prices are about average for outdoor shops and the staff are very helpful and knowledgeable.

Well, fortunately, Cotswold Outdoor saved my bacon (and my potentially cold bum) when I needed to source out something for Beacons Festival last weekend. I ran in, in quite a flurry, and found a member of staff. My basic words were thus: "I need a sleeping bag, a tent, a chair and an air bed. All really cheap." His response: "No problem." And he was telling the truth. To be fair, I probably could have sourced out cheaper than I got, but that would have involved pre-planning and buying online. This was not an option. Nonetheless, within about 10 minutes we had all the things I needed for a few nights in a field, and all for just over £100. Pretty good. The stand out experience here though was the staff; both chaps who helped me (they even let me store my items behind the till whilst I nipped elsewhere for further shoppings), were extremely friendly, helpful and patient. All in all, I'm definitely a fan! As for what they stock? I'm sure you know the deal. Pretty much everything you need with regard to camping, active life, sports and so on. They appear to have semi regular sales on stock, so do pop in if you're in the business of festival-ing, climbing, camping and the rest!

This huge store has everything you will need ( at a price )…read more There are lot's of erected tents of all sizes outside the building and within, very helpful if looking for the perfect tent for your needs. Camping furniture, outdoor clothing, large choice of sleeping bags for juniors and adults. Also reading matter in regards to walks etc.. ( over priced as is most of the things in this store unfortunately ). I feel that Outdoor World is going to be wiped out in Warrington after this GO Outdoors has been opened, it just cant match up to the sheer size and stock of this place. At the check out I was over-charged which I questioned, the check-out attendant told me that was what was coming through on the till so I paid I then went back to the area I picked my item from to see the labels and I was in fact correct at the price I thought it was. I asked a member of staff and they sorted it out for me and gave me the refund of the difference. Took a bit of time but still it was done without question. Proves its always good to double check if you are not sure you have been charged correctly. Floor staff really helpful and friendly. Check-out staff not as helpful, could have called a manager after I queried the price but I had to go and look for myself. Over-all though good shop if you have lots of cash to spend clothing seemed very expensive! You can buy a discount card for £5 a year. Gets you money off items, actually its a pretty good deal, example a £35 sleeping bag.. £29.99 with card. Discount depends on the original cost of the item. Worth getting if you are buying a lot or go often. It can make you a bit annoyed if you don't want the discount card to see how much less they can sell items for than the retail price you have to pay without a card.. seeing as the stuff is pretty pricey already. Get the card if buying over £40 of stuff as it already pays for itself and is handy for the future. (GO Outdoors need to pay me commission for that discount card advertisement haha ) 4 stars for amount of things in the store loses 1 star for being too expensive for most things.
