So - my partner and I wanted to install a pellet stove or wood stove in our house. We initially thought pellet and shopped around for those, then we decided wood. My partner put an ad on CL to see what was out there and was contacted by Jim, of Great Bear Renewable Energy. Jim said that he had a reconditioned wood stove that was still under warranty and he could do a full install that would meet all requirements and sell us a mantle for the new stove. We were completely happy with his price, bought the stove, sight unseen, where going to buy a mantle from him. We built a new hearth, had the fireplace cleaned, scheduled his inspection visit and we gave him a 50% deposit on the spot. He scheduled one install day and then had to reschedule. We confirmed the new date and checked in to confirm it again as it got closer (because we are facing November now and had already had one date go bad). He seemed like a nice enough guy when he came for the inspection and we were really excited about the stove. Out of the blue we get a check for a full refund of the stove with no explanation whatsoever. We call/email and ask why and get a message that my partner is a 'details guy' and so Jim doesn't think we'd be a 'good fit.' WHAT?!? If by "details guy" he means - we pay for a service, on time, as requested, and so we like to know that we are going to receive the service as promised - then, yes, he is a 'details guy'. When did this become a bad thing? We didn't hold back payment, we didn't demand to see the stove in person before we bought it, he is the one who replied to our query on CL - and then he rejects our business with a thoroughly questionable excuse? Can't recommend anyone do business with this Great Bear Renewable Energy. Now we are facing November, no wood stove and no chance of getting a good price on one until next summer when the winter season is over. Thanks for nothing. read more

After a lot of research it was decided that we wanted a Blaze King wood stove. I Called Great Bear on a Saturday and Dennis spent as much time on the phone as I needed answering my questions about Blaze King. I decided to go to the showroom to see the floor model and bought the Princess model. Within a few weeks Dennis and Co came and installed the stove as scheduled and built the first fire with us and trained us on how to use it. The stove is incredible, we only need to fill it twice a day and the heat output is unbelievable. It has a low setting if we need a longer burn time. We are very happy, the entire experience has exceeded our expectations. read more

As I live in Lunenburg, VT, I drive by Great Bear Renewable Energy all the time. Admittedly, I'm a fellow who purchases pellets by the best deal, and never thought of these guys as a business who could compete with local box stores. It never happens often, but I was glad I found out I was wrong. I had problems with my pellet stove last year and needed to have it serviced. I've kept up on cleaning it, but for whatever reason, the auger would stop turning. I had no idea as to what was wrong with it, but thought I'd take a leap and see if the guys at Great Bear could help. When I went down to the showroom, I met with Martin, manager of the facility. Great guy, he was no pressure. When I spoke about having problems with my pellet stove, he researched what make and model I had. Even though it's a discontinued model, he found a parts distributor, and that made my life so much easier. I took a look at some stoves, in case fixing the stove wouldn't be an option. I scheduled a service visit, even though I get really nervous about stuff like this. It was like taking your car to a mechanic that you'd never used before. Dennis, the service guy, came out to the house and checked the stove out. Within minutes he was able to tell me what my problem was, and it was an easy fix. He pointed out the ONE screw that needed to be tightened for it to work properly. He advised that I should be the one to tighten it, as if he were to do it he would have to charge for at least a house call. WOW! Imagine that? Great, HONEST service, where the business didn't try to take advantage of me. They were upfront about my options, they helped me as quickly as they could...and the best part? Their pellets are of better quality and just as cheap as the box stores. They've got a customer for life in me, and I can't recommend them highly enough. read more

Two bad experiences with this company. One: they repaired a pellet stove for me. I paid the full bill promptly. Less than a year later and only about a month of using the stove, it is not working and appears to be one of the same parts they replaced the first time. I know, stuff happens but they won't even have a look at it without a $190 service charge. Two: asked them for a quote to install a unit in another location. The guy came out to measure and gather info. After asking twice for the quote they never got back to me. read more
