The Grasshopper Lodge, a sweet little getaway located in a secluded area in Ocala National Forest. We stumbled upon this location on AirBnb and decided to book for a quick birthday getaway. We were not expecting to love it THIS much. In order to get to the lodge, you must have a durable vehicle, preferably one with 4WD as the minute you are on the road, you are "off roading" for a .5 miles. You are greeted by a sweet lady, Doris, who is the only other lodge on the street (that you can't see because it's tucked in the woods). The lodge (1 bed, 1 bath) is equipped with everything you need: a grill, kitchen appliances & utensils, wood fireplace, fire pit, picnic table, kayaks, a canoe, etc. We picked up some groceries and brought them to the lodge so we could cook, however, there are some restaurants located down the street (a few miles down) where you can dine. The best part about this lodge is the dock accessibility and the kayaks and canoe. It was awesome that we could just pickup the canoe and head out in the water. We loved being able to spend the day on the water and truly no one else was out there. There are quite a few springs nearby: Juniper, Alexander, Silver Glen, etc. all very easily accessible by car. There were also some great off roading trails nearby which were so fun! If you have an ATV, bring it! If you have an off roading truck/SUV, bring it! We even saw a cute little bear cub off roading! This was truly an epic getaway and we cannot wait to make this our annual tradition. read more

History

Established in 2008.

Grasshopper Lodge was built between 2003 and 2007 by Dave Greenberg, a former engineer and software entrepreneur. Dave dreamt of a cabin in the Pacific Northwest, but due to his wife’s preference for better weather, he searched near Orlando. He eventually found an abandoned 1930s cabin on a 1.5-acre secluded lot in the Ocala National Forest, bordering Big Grasshopper Lake. The renovation was a three-and-a-half-year project. With help from neighbor and mentor Ted Hokannen, Dave rebuilt the rotting structure from the ground up, utilizing local cypress and pine. He notably expanded the lodge by purchasing a log cabin on eBay from a New Jersey museum, which was transported and reassembled as a bedroom addition. Since 2008, the property has been managed by neighbor Doris Macintyre. Following Dave's passing in July 2025, his son Rafi now operates the lodge, continuing his father's legacy.

He is the epitome of everything the owner of an establishment and more. So thank you! The room he put me in. Amazing. Number one for me is cleanliness. Definitely passed. Second, the bed. Perfect. I love it even more than my bed! It is truly divine. The bathroom was nice and big! I love the claw foot tub. I didn't get to experience it but I'm sure it's wonderful. The shower pressure was a little on the lower side. But hey, nothing is as close to perfection as this place. I highly recommend this lovely hotel.

I will say that the rooms do not have adequate sitting space nor is there library or private lounge area to conduct business. However the social life will not be without entertainment if they remain on campus. The bar was always well tended as was the restaurant. I saw the man by the name of Tru operating 24/7 during my long stay and solely because of his presence would I return. Thank you again.

Treat paying customers with no kindness or respect. They genuinely would rather have no customers, which I would think the owner would dislike. The rooms did have a mold and mildew smell. The pool wasn't cleaned. The stairs were slippery from algae. When we stayed here five years ago it was the most pleasant place to stay. Definitely not worth the money or hassle now.
