I just had a very strange experience here. Even though I moved to Sleepy Hollow a year ago, I just started going to this wine shop maybe two months ago and was VERY impressed with it--the impressive displays, the cordial staff--a real win, win in my opinion. Tonight I wandered in looking for a finer Cabernet--not super pricey but around the $40-$50 price range. I directed myself to those wines and asked the clerk what made these wines so special. His answers included, "They taste really good," or "The label is enticing." Well, I wasn't completely satisfied with those answers but I decided to purchase the wine anyway when the owner came to me and said, "I don't like your tone, and if you're not going to purchase the wine, I'd like you to leave." She then escorted me to the door. It was clear that they didn't have an experienced wine staff. I have no problem with that. But in the few times that I've purchased wine there, it's clear that this is very true. It's a lovely store with a nice selection, but it clearly lacks knowledge of wine. read more

But what I really love is the personal service. Last week I was looking for a relatively obscure apertif (bianco vermouth). When they didn't have it in stock, they ordered it that day. Super local place to get some great deals on whiskey and wine. Very nice selection all around and very friendly. There might be the odd one lace with better prices in one or to items but this is a local venue and nicely laid out, a place you can roam around and get a good deal without getting ripped off. To be honest, I hardly know anything about wine. I'll come to Grape Expectations randomly and grab a bottle of wine for dinner, or stock of on booze for a party or something. Their prices are average for the area (which is to say you can probably get stuff cheaper outside of Tarrytown). It's my local liquor store, so I hold it close to my heard...so when I needed to get something really extravagant for my father's 60th birthday, this was a natural place to start. My father's a big time tequila drinker and I wanted to find something that would knock his socks off, so I asked the staff at GE what they knew and they were honest that tequila's not necessarily their area of expertise. However, they took my information and then a day later I got a call from them that they had done some research, found out about a rare, but extremely well reviewed bottle that they could get shortly. They then called me when it arrived just the next day, and when I picked it up, they had printed out some information and tasting notes on it. And the most important thing is that it passed the "father test." The customer service here is amazing, and the staff is great! read more

Love this place! Just walking into the store is a whole new experience on its own, he set up is amazing. The staff is friendly and they have plenty of wines to choose from. Tons of in and out of the box wines. And if you need a recommendation for your dinner or as a guest, don't hesitate to ask the staff, they are always on point! Great store. Knowledgeable employees and super nice owner. Good area for little kids to stay occupied, and always people there tasting. One star---for hostility and paranoia. This wine shop is located near a supermarket I go to, and sometimes after grocery shopping I'll stop in to see if there's anything new worth buying. If help is offered, I say no thank you---I have the Advanced Certificate from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust and I'm currently enrolled in their diploma program, and I've also earned the Society of Wine Educators' Certified Specialist of Wine designation. I don't need the help of a kid half my age. I'll buy something at this shop maybe once out of every four visits, and usually then only because I'm in a hurry and don't have time to shop elsewhere. I find that prices here are not competitive. For example, a popular Spanish garnacha for which I recently paid $8.99 is $12.99 here. So I had another look today, and on my way out (without purchasing) the owner stops me in the doorway and tells me I'm not allowed ever to return. I come in all the time and have never bought anything (NOT true) and that makes him uncomfortable. I told him that I have made purchases in the past, and he said no, I've never bought anything, don't come back. Well fine, obviously no great loss since I rarely find anything worthwhile here. But I have to say that if this shop gets so little traffic that someone browsing without buying once every few weeks makes a huge impression, then I suspect the recession will claim another retail victim soon. read more

Always working in high end restaurants, I've drank some pretty good wine. Whenever I'm in Tarrytown I visit Grape Expectations, (btw love the name). Nothing makes me happier than seeing Jairo when I walk through the door. He has always given AMAZING selections within my current budget. (Working in restaurants means a various budget.) Even more important than a great wine selection is customer service. I've never met a friendlier staff! Jairo is always there for me with open arms. I love coming to get my vino from this place the staff is knowledgable and friendly they will never steer you wrong! I love red wine and the selection is vast and there are tastings that where I've tried new wines that I would normally dismiss and were very delicious! This place is awesome! The first thing I noticed when I walk in is the really cool way they display the wine. This is the only place that I've seen such an interesting way of showing and holding wines. Most stores I see are just boring cramped carbon copies of each other. The next thing I noticed was the attentive and knowledgeable staff. They helped me pick a wine to cook with and a wine to go with my meal. They gave me a range of options to fit a bunch of different price ranges. It was a real help. Then I went to their liquor section in the back of the store and I saw that they had a huge liquor section. They have items from all over the world while still having some very local artisanal items. To say I was pleased by their selection would be an understatement. They have a bit of everything here! Helpful staff with great suggestions when I want to try something new ... they listen to your tastes and then match with a great choice in the price range you suggest. We heard about Grape from a friend and wine lover many years ago. We have been buying wine there ever since as well as enjoyed their tastings and they even did one at our house for a special bridal shower. They make wine buying accessible and less intimidating for those just learning about wine like our children and have many affordable but good choices. For many years they have also generously donated wine without hesitation to our historical society which is not located in Tarrytown when we were fund raising.
