Their attention to even the smallest details helped me as I dealt with her passing. after calling the funeral home and speaking with Ed about having my mom's service at her home church in Morganton he explained there would be no additional charge. A funeral that would have cost over $8000.00in Morganton was much less at Mackie and we were pleasantly surprised when planning. No one likes to deal with the death of a loved one but if I am ever in that situation again, I will not hesitate to call Mackie and speak with Ed and his staff...what a kind and loving family organization!

The only reason I gave 1 star is the gentleman who transported my mother from the nursing home to…read morethe funeral home. He was very polite and caring. On the other hand Ed showed no empathy at all. I didnt get to sleep until 6am after losing my mother only a few hours earlier. I felt as though I was being stalked. I kept getting Call after call after call back to back until I answered. When my daughter and I arrived at the funeral home I felt rushed still trying processing what had just happened. Because my mother had to be transported to OH, the funetal home there had to be notified. Ed left me standing. Not offering me a seat while he was on the phone, doing is job. When leaving, he kept telling me to amswer the phone when he calls. After finding that the person handling her estate had not pay her life insurance in the past two yrs, we called and asked if Mackie offered a payment plan. The answer was no. We had called around and found that Bass funeral home would allow payments. Ed couldnt get my mother out of his establishment fast enough. He was worried that Mackie would be listed on the death certificate that had been delivered to the nursing home already I let him know it would be taken care of and I would return it when I came to pay him the nearly $400 that he charged to take my mother from Hickory to Granite Falls. Ed was more concerned anout his needs than our families needs. After boasting that he was the least expensive funeral home in 3 counties, we found Bass Funeral home about 1/4 mile away who was kind, caring and 1/2 the price of ehat Mackie had quoted us. Bass was sympathetic and empathetic. They even paid Mackie thier ridiculous fee for traspoting my mother. Bass would have charged less than $200. One more thing, Ed hung up on the social worker that was helping me with arramgmemts when he realized that we were taking her to another funeral home. What an insult to the memory of my mother!

Operated as a municipal cemetery by the City of Hickory (along with Southside, Ridgview and…read moreFairview), it is part of the Oakwood Historic District that contains over 50 historic buildings and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The cemetery has some 8000 interments and is quite large. Scattered with trees and crisscrossed with drivable roadways, it is quite easy to navigate though some better markings and sections would be helpful. It is an active cemetery and plots are still available for sale. I walked through here quite a bit and found it quiet and peaceful. Perhaps the most famous resident is Colonel Clinton Albert Colley, who according to findagrave.com, "Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Brevet Colonel in the Union Army. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a Captain in Company C, 2d Minnesota Infantry for action on September 20, 1863 at Chickamauga, Georgia. His citation reads "Seized the colors of a retreating regiment and led it into the thick of the attack."" "Oakwood Cemetery" is a popular name for cemeteries.
