This was my second stay. First was about four years ago and it was lovely! Large, full rooms with full kitchens, friendly and helpful staff. Things have changed, my friends. First, I want to be clear that the person at the front desk was very friendly. He had our cards ready to go at check in. I'm wondering however, if our first stay four years ago was the last time the place was cleaned. Cockroaches in the bathroom, blood stain on the bed (yuck!!) guess your stains and gunk everywhere else. People fighting loudly next door, maybe long term tenants. Possibly under new management? Regardless. Stay ANYWHERE else at this point. Even if its sleeping in your car. Sad to say this place is filthy. read more

Booked this hotel room while in town for graduation. Big mistake. Checked in, saw the state of our 2 queen bed room, reported our concerns to the gentleman working the front desk who was only able to offer us a 1 bedroom with a pull-out sofa, and immediately asked to be checked out and refunded for the room. The walls were scuffed, dishes left in dishwasher, stains on couch and chair, poor job vacuuming, and there was mold in the bathroom in addition to water on the floor from some leak. Hotel room was big, nice kitchenette in the room, but the dishes were dirty in the dishwasher and my mil and sil's rooms didn't have towels. The beds were made well and it was otherwise clean. The pool was small but good. Once again, no towels in the pool area either. Hot tub was not working and after looking at reviews it seems like that's a common occurrence. First glance, it seemed like it would be an okay hotel experience. Reviews were mixed, but our family usually gives the benefit of the doubt to the good reviews. We were greeted by a happy hotel staff member at the front desk. However, he and his coworker expressed that they were stressed as the hotel had never been booked this full before. We get to the room. It's not clean. Mold growing in the tub. dirt on the floor. large pretzel debris in the pull out bed. The pull out "bed" is the main source of contention. There was no bedding provided anywhere in the room for the pull out (and yes, we reserved a two bed room). We knew they were busy at the front desk, so my husband went down to get bedding. They were able to provide sheets and a pillow, but no pillow sheets or blankets were available. The mattress in question was heavily stained and very thin. The mattress was lumpy and painful. we tried moving it to the floor to see if that would provide more support, but it didn't. My older son chose to curl up on the floor instead. The regular bed wasn't bad and the room was nice in the respect there was a full size fridge. location was Convenient. While we were there a pipe leaked and the stairs became unaccessible for a day. The pool is tiny. It's all concrete and the floor becomes very slippery. The hot tub was out of order and looked as though a large amount of mud had accumulated at the bottom of it. If you need one bed only and just need a place to stay overnight this wouldn't be the worst option, but if you have a family look elsewhere. read more

I sure hope that the wrinkles get ironed out before the grand opening on September 30, 2021. The internet was out for over 24 hours during our stay and the staff seemed like it was a common occurrence and weren't too concerned. The public waste disposal areas such as the laundry room and outside the hotel were over flowing. When I mentioned it to the evening front desk person she said she would take care of it right away. No, the waste baskets were still full in the morning. The mattress we slept on was not comfortable and may have been in need of replacing. I will say the front desk was accommodating when we and another guest checked out a day early and got a full refund. read more

I have stayed here many times. The rooms are very big, everything is very clean. You can start to see some wear and tear but overall pretty good. I really like staying here because Old Chicago is hook next to it. Only bad part is they don't let you take beer to your room, so make sure to buy some ahead of time. read more

best hotel i have ever stayed in, and it was $70. I was driving cross country on I-80 and chose to stay in Ames, IA. This room at Grandstay was a palace. 2 tvs, a full kitchen...it almost kinda reminded me of a bed & breakfast. I'm not a big fancy spender so I never stayed in a hotel this nice before Another cool thing is that its connected to a Chicago pizzeria that proudly serves 110 different kinds of beers. I think its worth traveling to Ames and just staying there as a vacation. It was a lot of fun read more

My husband and I have always stayed here while visiting my son who goes to Iowa State. It's always been a great place to stay and a pleasant experience. Not this time. They think they are too good for their customers. I had specifically asked my room to be cleaned and that did not get done. The night supervisor was apologetic and tried to make things right. The next day I called the front desk about half a dozen times but nobody picked up. After about 6 calls and an hour later, the front desk supervisor picked up. I asked if I could stay a few minutes past noon as we were running late. And that I had tried to call the front desk for over an hour from 10:00 am. I was told even a few minutes past noon and I would be charged for an extra half a day. Save yourself the trouble. Go somewhere where they treat you nice. I paid $268 for 2 nights- one bedroom. Not worth it. They clearly messed up. Instead of doing right and straightening things out, they set out to lay the rules of the hotel. read more

Wasn't impressed. And it wasn't $70.00/night. We were charged $121.00 WITH AARP discount. Didn't think it was worth it. Sorry

I have been stayed the hotel twice, total of 15 days. This hotel was perfect for everything: staff, facility, location and price ($80). I recommend the hotel especially if you are planning a long stay. The hotel located close to ISU, lots of nearby grocery store and restaurant, rooms have kitchenette with full-size fridge/freezer and dishwasher. There were quite a few options for complimentary breakfast, some of menu change daily so you can see different breakfast every morning. The most impressive thing here was staff. They were very friendly and always supportive when need assistance. One thing, it was a minor thing to me, but, the Wi-Fi connection often disconnected. You may want to bring a internet cable with you if internet connection is important. My friend brought a cable and did not have connection issue. Overall, I was very happy staying here and I highly recommend this hotel when you visit Ames. read more
