Classic Wisconsin bar. I wouldn't call it a dive bar - it was nicer than that. We had seen the…read morereviews about their sandwiches so when passing through town we stopped for lunch. It wasn't too busy so we grabbed a could seats at the bar. Great tavern atmosphere! The staff was friendly and pointed out their "extensive" menu posted on the wall - maybe six items! I opted for the hot ham and cheese sandwich with onion. I also got a side of their famous hot horseradish mustard. Wow what a kick! The sandwich was juicy and excellent. My wife got their Spanish stew which was just OK. Kind of a weak chili. Skip it. They are also known for their hot roast beef sandwich. Definitely stop by and try the ham sandwich!

Here are two overlapping reasons why a trip to Ray's Place is worth your time…read more 1. Food & Drink: The beers (a very generous selection of which are on tap) and the beef and ham sandwiches are filling and flavorful. With regard to the sandwiches, be sure to request the horseradish-infused mustard (known among my friends as "Wisconsin Napalm). 2. The People: Ray's Place is a "third place" for all kinds of folk. Sit at the bar or take a table at Ray's and you will rub shoulders with rowdy Packer's fans (look for the green Jell-O shots), UW students taking a break from cracking the books, steel-toe boot wearing workers who have just finished theirs shifts, and/or families catching a quick bite before going to or returning from the kid's' games. Go to Ray's and be prepared to meet a microcosm of Eau Claire. See you there.

Was in town for family this week and it has been along time for a Wisconsin fish fry. Read the…read morereviews so thought we would try here. The appetizer was good had the potato kegs. Went with a baked and a deep fried on the fish tonight. The baked came out dry and with enough butter was able to eat it. My deep fried had a good cook on the fish could have seasoned the breading. Now for the two disappoints the tartar sauce was just mayonnaise in a container no taste at all in it. The coleslaw as well was had no flavor to it. I had the fires and for a crinkle cut fry they needed to be cooked longer and for a Wisconsin fish fry missed the rye bread just had a piece of toasted bread. The server never came back to ask how our food was. Granted it was the first fish fry of lent bunt overall was not busy when we were there. The other food looked good coming out but was set on a fish fry tonight. Going off that alone very hard to give a good review and service was low as well. I know this sounds harsh but I have cooked know what a fish fry should be like and service as well. Normal bar environment as well. I should say I think I talked to a manger about this but not much was said from him
