Marjellchen - Side of plain spaetzle - perfectly fine but just bland noodles (I hoped there'd be cheese mixed in)

We had our best meal in Berlin at Marjellchen! We stayed at the Westin in Mitte, and the Uber ride…read moreto Marjellchen was totally worthwhile. Food: Excellent food. Potato soup was perfect. We had the pork shank and the game goulash. The goulash was fantastic. Yes cabbage was perfect. The potatoes wrestle pork shank were probably cooked in bacon fat and were sublime. My only nit to pick is the dumplings with the goulash were flavorless gooey dough balls. Drinks: Excellent draft beer. Try the Duckstein red! It's fantastic. Also the "Potato Snap" (like a home brewed vodka) is a fun and interesting shot before dinner! Service: Rather slow but the poor wait staff are completely overworked. Ambiance: Quaint, almost like a dining room in an old home. Value: For the quality, value is solid. Dinner and beer for 2 with 5% tip for just under 100 Euros.

Service: young girl was our waitress and was very busy but very friendly. She was not able to checkup on us after we ordered, so order everything you need. Drinks: they had 3 beer on draught, got the red blonde and it was delicious made me think of an Irish Red. Food: we ordered potato soup and it was delicious! Creamy yet chunky. The bread with the butter sour cream?? Spread paired perfectly with the soup. As our main I got the pork knuckle and my husband got the game goulash. The pork nuckle was very tender fall off the bone, I tried to eat the skin but it was too salty but the pork was super delicious. The potatoes were incredible! With chunks of bacon and the soft interior with the slight crispy exterior was just perfect side. The German coleslaw was crunchy with hint of sour and sweet. It cut through the fat of the pork and was a crunchy brightness to the entire dish. Restaurant: romantic and cozy and clean Bathroom: clean

They have a long list of breakfast plates. Expect massive plates of classic German breakfast fare so cold cuts, cheese and various spreads. My BF and I shared a plate of French toast and another plate with a funny name (well, all their platters have interesting names). Everything was good and it was perfect for a leisurely brunch. In fact I think we were there for a couple hours at least. We also ordered cake and coffee. The Napoleon cake was delightful! Coffee could be better though which is why this is only a 4 star review. Also my other complaint is that they do not take credit card.. Although that's apparently very much the norm in Berlin.

The location is lovely, right on the small garden square of Viktoria-Luise-platz, with its central fountain. The food is a mixture of standard German breakfast and snacks (albeit with Russian-themed names) with Russian dishes, such as Borscht (both vegetarian and with meat), and boiled and grilled chicken. My meal (a vegetarian breakfast of cheeses and fruit with a generous bread basket) was perfectly good but my friend had the chicken, which turned out to be slightly under cooked. The service was also ever so slightly supercilious, which I found rather irritating. So although it was OK, there are plenty of other choices for a brunch in the area that I'd prefer.

Good food! Which is a plus, since the service here is... slow. It's the "expect to be assertive"…read morestyle of German restaurant, where they're pretty much going to leave you alone unless you wave them down and ask for something. Sadly, I'm the only person here. The food was on the plus side of "good," not mind-blowing or anything. Doesn't beat my favorite NYC Eastern European restaurant, but I had a good Greek salad here (except the olive were green, ugh), a good entree and a good little dessert. Very interesting atmosphere, sort of like a formerly tying-to-be-elegant family restaurant that is a little worn at the edges. Seems like a family-run place, still; there were kids running around, a dog they were playing with outside, that sort of thing. Want blinis? This is a good place to go.
