I'm no karate or jiu-jitsu person, but I visited Gracie Barra to attend an hour long self-defense class sponsored by LVMPD. And WOWZA, what an experience! It's right off the 215 and Gibson exit, which makes it super easy to access. I'm currently making my way towards my bachelor's degree in criminal justice at UNLV, on track to graduate next fall, so this class was a perfect opportunity to work with Metro and what to expect when I begin a career in the criminal justice field. Can I just say that I got in a much well needed workout here? Being the big workout nerd I am, this class was extremely useful for me and I learned new moves and techniques to use anytime I'm in danger or when I feel threatened. This was an all-female self defense class, which I truly appreciated. We were introduced to one of the owners of Gracie Barra, Rafaela (I think that's how you spell her name), who guided us step after step to each self-defense workout. Some moves were easy, some moves were a little difficult and confusing than others. Other instructors went around and helped us every step of the way. My fitness levels are at a good standing and I was told by my self-defense partner that I had excellent strength, mostly in my thighs. With the conclusion of the class, everyone that attended was offered one free week of jiu-jitsu classes, plus we all got a goodie bag from LVMPD. BEWARE bringing your kids here. Any parents thinking of this location should think twice. Background: our whole family does jiu jitsu...myself and my 2 young boys, and we travel a lot to different Gracie Barra locations. I've seen many different locations, coaches, etc. and have always had a nice experience. That was until we came to this Henderson location... My son is a tough kid who's been doing competitions since he was 5. He's still young though. I brought him to try out the Henderson location. First, there are far too many kids in the class with not nearly enough instructors...both from a safety standpoint, and from an optimal learning environment. During the class, my son was rolling full speed with kids roughly his age and weight, and everything was fine. Now at that point, Professor Nathan moves him to a kid that is 2 years older, a head taller, and ~40 pounds more weight. Keep in mind, when kids are just 7 or 8, this is a huge increase. My son fought really well, but over time, the bigger kid started throwing him around given his size. My son was then holding his neck and clearly hurt. To my son's credit, even though he was clearly sniffling and fighting back full crying, he stayed on the mat to continue to roll with this kid. Now at this point, ANY CARING AND OBSERVANT professor would move the kid back down to kids his own size after seeing that the level of competition with the older/bigger kid was too high. Especially when the younger kid is crying and injured. You don't want kids to get hurt emotionally or physically. Bigger/older/heavier kids can seriously hurt smaller kids...it's not like adults going up against bigger opponents. NOPE. The professor was so careless and reckless, he then immediately paired him with an EVEN BIGGER kid, with a higher belt. In which the whole painful ordeal continued for another 3 minutes of rolling with this even larger and older kid. Still crying and holding his neck, my son tried to stick it out, visibly in anguish. Finally, I insisted my son come off the mat to end this nonsense and take a breather. I have NEVER SEEN such recklessness and lack of care for a young kid like I did that day. I confronted Nathan at the end of the class, and calmly and respectively, explained how dangerous it was what he did, how we wasn't paying attention, how damaging a session like that could be for a kid, and how we wouldn't be coming back. I also said my son was hurt, and that his confidence was clearly shaken. NOT ONCE, did Nathan say "How's he doing?" or "Can I go speak with him to encourage him?". In other words, not a modicum of care for this little kid. NOT ONCE. Not a single mention of his well-being. Nathan just immediately became defensive and arguing with me that he did nothing wrong. Finally, he literally just motioned me to leave the gym as I pressed him (again, calmly and respectively) telling me to leave. The way Nathan behaved during our conversation was outrageous. Even for kids who are at the competition level like my son, SAFETY, SELF-CONFIDENCE, and MORALE are still paramount. Especially for little kids. Nathan should know that. And if he doesn't, he shouldn't be running a gym for kids. Never go to this place...after what they showed me, I wouldn't trust any kids in this environment. read more

I have had enough time here to give an honest review. Save yourself some money and do not go here. The price is ridiculous and they have NO SPACE in their gym. No room for teaching when you are above maximum capacity. Kids that are not even in the class time are allowed to run around the facility and almost run into everybody. If you need a chair, well good luck to you. The kids are using them to play hide and seek, while adults have to sit on the floor. I felt like i was back in high school with how much of a clique it is. Unless you and your whole family are paying them and taking classes, then you are not worth their time. I hate to say it, but it is only a matter of time until a child gets really hurt. If you notice the reviews, the 5 star ones are from a few years ago, so don't let those fool you. read more

HORRIBLE. First off, there are way too many kids in the class, and not enough instructors. Not only does each kid not get enough attention on what they're doing wrong/right. It's just dangerous that they can't supervise all the various kids. They're attitude is that they don't care. Find a better one that has more attention to each kid and doesnt risk them getting hurt. read more

I have a hard time giving a small business a poor review unless it's really bad. It was really bad. My teen had never tried any type of martial arts, ever. She's an athlete (competitive soccer player), and we moved here hoping she could try something indoors until she acclimated to the weather here. So we try a free class, everyone is nice at first. She participated in class the whole time. Then, after class, the instructor said NOTHING to her. No "what did you think?" "Good job" NOTHING. We sat on the couch close to the front desk after class, waiting to see if they wanted to talk with us, anything?? No follow up, whatsoever. Is this normal? We were left feeling unwelcome. Myself and my 2 kids (ages 6 & 8) have been coming for 6 months. We love Gracie Barra and the amazing staff of coaches and professors. It is a great family friendly environment to learn both self defense and life skills. Great programs for kids and there are class options 6 days a week. For adults it is a very inclusive environment as well for both men and women. This is my second Jiu Jitsu school. When I moved to Henderson in 2017, I transferred here primarily because the academy opened up very close to my home. What I found was a school that provided a folksy environment and great training. Rafa and Mari have been consistent as coaches and they run a fantastic kids program. The school is part of the Gracie Barra international association, so you can train as a guest in schools just about anywhere in the world! I normally attend morning classes and they are not as well attended as the evening adult classes. This gives you the opportunity for more focused training. read more

Me and my family (3 sons and 1 nephew) have been going to Gracie Barra for about 4 months. We are very glad we made the choice to begin Jiu-Jitsu training, and even more we are glad we started with Gracie Barra. I really don't think I can express how good this gym is. To start with you the Jiu-Jitsu technique taught here is second to none and given by very able teachers who can communicate very well. The gym is always clean and they keep the temperature cool. They are not cheap with the AC! They have a great combination on Male and Female Coaches (Leo,Rafa, Mari and Gabriel). They are the real deal! These coaches watch to keep the students safe and I have never felt uncomfortable in any way since I've been there. Professor Pedro is the highest ranked teacher, I believe he is a Black belt with 4 stripes. He learned under Carlos Gracie Jr in Brazil since he was 8. He's a great teacher. They keep a very encouraging atmosphere in the gym. Every since my boys have been going they have lost weight, gained confidence and hardly ever touch the gaming system. My family and I are in Las Vegas for the Thanksgiving holiday, so decided to come by and get some training in. So glad I did, Professor Wesley and Coach Mariana are awesome! I was made to feel very welcome by them both as well as the other students during class, which speaks alot about this place. Professor Welsey and Coach Mariana's instruction was clear and they were very patient when breaking down the moves. The facility is large and very clean. I just moved back to the area for a period of time and always wanted to try out a GB. Leo was friendly and welcoming, so were the instructors and vibe on the mat was friendly. However, what I think sets them apart is how thorough the program is, taking away new skills and additions to my game. The level on the mat was high and there's some serious black belts there. I visited Gracie Barra Henderson while in Las Vegas for a work conference and they were amazing. Coach Leo and Coach Rafa were both super helpful and welcoming. The students were friendly and great training partners as well. Professor Gabriel (he goes by Professor Billy) gave fantastic instructions and I really like how involved he is with the students and the team. Last but not least, the facilities are flawless. Large mat space, bright and well ventilated, clean bathrooms, and excellent changing areas. The academy is well laid out and decorated with all of the traditional GB fixtures that made me feel like I was training at my home school even though I was only visiting. I would highly recommend this place for anyone looking to try jiu jitsu in a non-threatening but challenging environment and it is definitely worth a visit if you're already training and in the Las Vegas area! I guess I'll be the first to not rate this place 5 stars. My family was considering this place and we were under the impression they were allowing a free trial week....which is not unusual for a place to do. I realize the website states a free class, but after speaking to someone there, it came across as a free week. I thought it was some type of special or maybe something had changed. After all, how can you just base an experience and commit long term to a place after only one class? Well, we came a second day and no one said anything...which seemed to coincide with the free week. We were told Coach Leo was gonna talk to us about prices on this second day....never happened. So we even told them we would see them tomorrow...for the third day...again, no one said anything. So upon coming in for the third day, Coach Leo asked if we were ready to sign up? I explained that no one even spoke to us about prices or specials...he informs me it's just a free class, not a week. Well, that's not good communication and if it was just a free class, and you cared about adding a new family, then why not inform them the second day we did class? Let me say that the instructors we worked with were kind and patient, and this is not meant to be a reflection of them, (that's why I gave 2 stars) but this miscommunication and the way this was handled by Gracie Barra was not very good. This was very disappointing. Made our decision to not go to their gym much easier. read more
