Meeting up here for a free walking tour (even though the tour guide did not appear, perhaps because…read moreof the rain), I had a good opportunity to see the outside and the inside of this beautiful church as well as the lovely grounds. The first church was build here in 1803-1807 with the aid of public subscriptions and a government grant. That frame building was enlarged in 1818-19 and replaced by a larger one in 1831. The first incumbent was the Reverend George Okill Stuart, who served from 1800 to 1812 when he was succeeded by the Reverend John Strachan, later first bishop of Toronto. The second church was burnt in 1839. Toronto's first cathedral was then erected on this site but was destroyed by the great fire of 1849. The present cathedral was begun in 1850, opened for divine service in 1852 and completed in 1874. The structure is stunning, the interior is classic and peaceful. It is open to the public and you're welcome inside but please keep in mind as you do so that this is an active church so please be considerate of the other parishioners. Featured as an 1853 Gothic Revival cathedral, the parish held services prior to COVID-19 measures took effect but have now restarted limited in-person Sunday worship. Many church ministries and community outreach initiatives have been negatively impacted by this pandemic. Remind yourself to Keep the Faith!

GENERAL NOTES I only go to churches for wedding, funerals…read moreand concerts and as much fun as weddings can be (for obvious reasons), this was easily the most fun I've had at a church. First of all, the church itself is the perfect music venue. Seating for about 700-800 including a huge U-shaped balcony with padded pews (who are the suckers on the main floor sitting on hard wood?), this church is truly a place to worship...music. It's a smallish room, keeping you close to the action but the high ceiling allows for wonderful reverberations. It's sonic poetry. MENU RECOMMENDATIONS Try the water. Holy, it's good. LOCATION NOTES Located on the south side of Bloor, just west of Spadina. Street parking on side streets. It stands out in the Annex like Mark Wahlberg at a Pride Festival.

If you're looking to travel to see a favorite band - and they're playing here - stop reading this, go back to Ticketmaster and book those tickets before they sell out. This easily became my absolute favorite place to see a concert. What was expected to be a great venue turned out to be a borderline holy experience. The sound was great, the venue is gorgeous, and the security/management at the venue allowed us to get into the place in a seamless, painless process. The only downside is the heat. If you're going in the summer months, stop at some little tourist trap shop and buy a $1 folding fan. It was the best investment I made in our entire weeklong trip.
