We have lived in Vernonia for about 3 yrs. now and have had the opportunity to visit and/or become…read moreacquainted with several churches in the area.
One church we visited, the pastor was standing outside after services, shaking people's hands and thanking them for coming. The handshake was more of a shove to move on so he could get the hell outta there and get home. And, he and his crew were wearing shorts and flip flops. I felt totally out of place in "church clothes". We haven't returned.
Another church we went to a few times is my husband's "native faith" as it were. I don't want to get into saying anything about this church as it would seem that I'm totally bashing them because I can't, right off, think of anything good about my experiences there. I also hate how they split the men from the women to go their separate ways for studies. That's just weird. Most churches teach with the family unit TOGETHER.
And still another church that we visited was purely because our pre-teen acquainted herself with some folks in the neighborhood that attend that church. Yes, our neighbor is the pastor. Last Spring, we asked the pastor if we could rent/borrow/barter the use of his tiller for an 8 x 8 (tiny) garden that we were planning. His answer? "No, it was my dad's and I'd hate for it to get broken"....This being said the day after he finished tilling HIS large garden with it.
That week, we started "tilling" the garden with SHOVEL and HOE! It was a backbreaking, tedious, job. It took us most of the day. Just as we were finishing up, a member from the church next door looks over the fence and says "Oh my! I wish I'd known you needed a tiller, I'd have brought you mine! Next time, let me know when you need it". Yea, after we picked our jaws up off the ground, we looked at one another and said "wooooooooooow, now THAT'S what a man of God looks and sounds like!" He didn't know us, he'd only seen us briefly as he'd go to church each sabbath day (his church being next door to our home). Our daughter had gone to his church several times but he never pressured us to join. Since that day, it's been the same experience with this man....totally unconditional friendliness. Not only that, a few weeks back, he came over to our home to inform us that his church took a vote and decided to sponsor our daughter at Summer Camp! And still, no "hey, why don't y'all join us for services next Saturday?!". It's pure, unconditional Godliness coming from this man. I think it'd be great if all area pastors, ministers, bishops, and brethren could spend a few minutes in the company of Mr. Seibert. You'll walk away knowing that you just spoke to one of God's own. No doubt about it.
