I have had Governor Stumpy's bookmarked on my to-do list for years but just got around to visiting them this Saturday afternoon. I thought of my parents after getting settled in at the bar. This is the type of old school neighborhood bar and restaurant that my parents would take me as a child. The booths along the wall, the outside deck, muted TV's with golf and the NFL draft above the bar, christmas lights strung along the ceiling... all triggered magical memories of visiting places such as Bob Ford's Canteen, Joe's Bar and Grill, The Liberty Bell... as a child. The menu has all the standards from steak, chops, burgers, sandwiches, pizzas, salads...something for everyone in the family. I ordered the Posnanski's Chicken Spiedini - named for Joe, the former KC resident and sportswriter that I assume was a regular when he worked for the KC Star. The dish was a plate of spaghetti in a tomato pesto sauce topped with a long skewer of chicken spiedini then topped with a fresh tomato heavy marinara and two slices of garlic toast. A fantastic and perfectly sized entree. To go along with the good food and vibe was the service. My waitress / bartender was friendly and engaging and the jovial owner came over twice to chat about sports and follow up on my meal. Another mature lady (owner's wife? / manager?) not only asked me about my dish but asked if I'd order it again and what modifications I would make. If you've read my past reviews, you know how much customer service means to me, and Governor Stumpy's is nailing it. I also had a nice chat with a gentleman sitting at the bar discussing food and Kansas geography. A perfect little afternoon in Waldo. An easy five stars and wishing that I lived in the neighborhood. Food & Service here was A++. We went with a larger group after baseball game. We had quite a few tables. Our server was wonderful. She took our orders, got our drinks and the food came out piping hot. Kudos to the kitchen for being on top of their game. I was surprised and the speed and better yet, enjoyed the food. Ambiance is great. Not exactly a neighborhood bar as it was in the past as the city has grown up around it but the history is still present. The food is good on a bar food scale, not in a bad way, but nothing remarkable that is specific to Stumpy's and the drink menu is basic. Great out doors space when weather permits. If you are in the area and want a drink and a quick lunch it will not disappoint. The service I had was very good as well. read more

Fun local spot where the energy is very welcoming to families. Definitely kid-friendly. I have to put that up top because that's definitely not always the case and it really feels heartening when it is. Our girls had eyes on the quarter-filled candy machines, and one of the managers/bartenders came up to them with quarters and little cups so they could get dessert on the way out. Love little touches like this. The interior feels updated and a bit sterile, if I'm being honest. I was kind of hoping for that old-school, pub type of homeiness but it was kinda gray and modern. The food is your sort of classic jack-of-all-trades food; beers, apps, pizzas, pastas. I ended up with the fish & chips which was really solid, and loved the black pepper on the fries. Our server was great as well. It was blistering hot or else we would've loved to sit on the covered patio on the west side of the building, but that's definitely more seasonal. Well, this place is fun! The staff was super kind and welcoming to a couple of strangers from Lee Summit. Waldo is an area of town that we are very fond of and consider living in at some point. We have seen this place while driving through town a couple of times and my wife looked it up on the Internet and wanted to stop here and have lunch or dinner. She ordered the Chicken Spiedini. She's never been to Garozzo's or had it before. She loved it!!! She ate half and took the rest home for another full meal. I had the turkey sandwich and a side salad. Both were good. We had chips and queso for an appetizer and apparently there was a cheese shortage in the kitchen. A couple of tablespoons or cheese were offered. Double the amount or at least filling up the tiny cup instead of leaving it half full would have been nice. We'd both be happy to return someday. read more

We went on a Friday night and it was super crowded but somehow we got a table for three in 10-15 minutes. Well, actually I know how - once they seat you they serve you like lightning and there is a definite "Anything else no okay here's your bill bye" vibe. But I love Governor Stumpy's cheeseburger more than little baby ducks so it's fine. Also had a fun cocktail (pictured) called a Stump Water that was basically a Mai Tai. Prices are good, other dishes are also tasty like the BLT and the fries are excellent; very thin and salty. Overall I recommend but don't go on a Friday or Saturday night if you want a relaxed meal. read more

Found 2 hairs in my Food and they didn't belong to me. Server needs training. She had 2 tables including ours. Never saw her or him, not sure, again. This is completely bar food based. Visited for the first time this week while my car was being worked on, and we were blown away. The food was phenomenal- it reminded me of home (although 10x better). You MUST order the Pistachio Pudding Cake. It's the best slice of cake I think I've ever had. The service was top-notch. I liked the neighborhood bar feel (without being a dive), the great service, the reasonable prices, the delicious lunch, and the ample parking. My taco salad ($9.50) with choice of beef or chicken was served just nine minutes after I ordered. It was generously sized, with a good portion of tasty, marinated chicken and mild salsa. I found the service to be attentive, cheerful, welcoming, and thankful - nice! We love the Gov! We try to go once a week or at least a couple of times a month. I typically order their chicken spedini. It's my favorite dish there. Although, a few weeks ago their center cut sirloin was on special so I gave it a go. It was tender and they cooked it perfect. The service is always prompt and friendly. We'd never been here before and decided to give it a try. We came in on Friday at 11:15 and it was fairly empty so we were seated right away. We ordered mozzarella sticks and they came out super quick, before we ordered our food but we were hungry so it was fine and they looked great. This is my go to appetizer so I dug in. Unfortunately they looked better than they tasted. The flavor was kind of ok but the texture was super creamy like American cheese instead of the chewy you get from your normal mozz stick. I was with my mom and she just overall didn't like them. The waitress came to check back on how they were and offered to drop them back in the fryer which seemed like an odd solution for the wrong kind of cheese so we declined. We ordered chicken fingers to split for the meal and they were fine. Standard prefab chicken. The fries though - OMG. I WOULD GO BACK JUST FOR THESE. I love me a good French fry and these were so good. Add some ranch and I no longer cared about the flaws in the other items. When we were done and the bill came, my mom asked about having the mozzarella sticks taken off the bill since we didn't eat them. The waitress said something about how she offered us a solution but people like them and they are good and that was that......or so we thought. Then shit got weird. A tall bald dude came over and crouched down next to the table, introduced himself as the owner of the establishment and, in a lovely and condescending tone said he had been told we didn't like his mozzarella sticks and asked what he could do to improve them. I let him know that I considered myself to be somewhat of a connoisseur of mozzarella sticks and while these were edible, the texture was just weird. Even though he had just asked me what he could do to improve them, he then advised me that I ought not order them again as they would be the same each and every time I reordered them. My mom mentioned again that she though the taste and texture were off from a normal mozzarella stick and wondered if it was mozzarella or a different type of cheese, to which he flippantly responded "yeah it says that right on the box!". He again reminded us that on future visits we should avoid ordering this item as it would be the same each time which I assured him would not be an issue. He did end up taking the mozzarella sticks off the bill but not before revealing himself to be a complete and total douchebag. I will, however, still be going back for the fries. read more

Between Regan, who somehow coincidentally knew my two best friends, to Chrissy, who ran the restaurant and bar while engaging every customer as if they were family, I felt as though I had been coming here for years!! Sports Bar SuperFan Spot #3- Governer Stumpys Date- Monday June 3rd Time- lunch My parents are simple Midwestern folk, no adventurous eaters, no advid Bizzare Foods fans, but we can agree on a good Sports Bar spot for lunch. Governer Stumpy's is in my neighborhood of Waldo so when my parents suggested we meet there for lunch I happily aggreed and was pleasantly surprised at how good our meal turned out! I decided on a BLT, something I don't usually order when out because I kind of think the simplicity of the ingredients shines just as well made at home with good quality grocery store finds, however it hit the spot for a filling lunch. The bread was toasty, the bacon was salty and perfectly cooked and the juicy in-season tomato and crisp butter lettuce were fresh additions not sad afterthoughts. Also, the french fries I chose for my side were midly addicting with the heavy salt and pepper dusting coating the top. My dad's tenderloin sandwich, on lunch special for $7 served with your choice of fries, coleslaw or potato salad, looked high quality and executed well not like how some pork tenderloins are so thin and overbreaded that they turn out dry and tuff. I will definitely be choosing Governer Stumpys over some of the other sports bars in the area when I'm focusing on the food, it was tasty, nicely prepared and hit the spot for a quick buisness hour lunch (or a lunch with your incredibly vanilla Midwestern parents). read more

Unexpected and pleasantly surprised by the Postmates delivery from today's lunch. I've never heard of this place, but I'm excited to try them again. I had a taste for shrimp so I ordered the fried shrimp platter with the best cocktail sauce I've ever tasted. The shrimp was crispy and well seasoned. Fun, small town neighborhood vibes at Governor Stumpy's! The inside was much nicer than I was expecting and the patio seating was an added bonus. You probably won't find a cheaper beer and sandwich combo in the area. The 22 oz Lagunitas IPA I had was around $5.50, and the tenderloin combo with fries was $9. Fries didn't look like anything extraordinary, but were cooked just right. Tenderloin came with all of the toppings and was good as well. I always wonder where to eat in Waldo. Funny, I've driven by Governor Stumpys many times. Until I realized it wasn't a bar by reading the Yelp reviews.So we stopped and once I went inside, I wondered why I'd never stopped. The menu has a large selection. I ordered a reuben. I had my mom with me. She ordered quiche and cream of broccoli soup. The reuban, oh my delicious! I totally suggest it. Not too much sauerkraut, and marble rye bread. Lot's of roast beef, and a little thousand Island dressing. I've not had a reuban that good for awhile. The staff was friendly. I didn't have any alcohol or drinks. I had iced tea which was kept full. I needed a box for the reuban. I ate most of the fries, which are thin and slightly seasoned. No complaints. The atmosphere was pub like which reminded me of Rosie's in NYC which is alsio Irish. And next time I'm in Waldo.......I know where to eat. read more

Another stop on the best Rueben search for hubby! He loved it and so of course I had to try a bite or two and I really enjoyed their sliced meat. The sandwich was perfectly portioned and pretty tasty. The potato salad was pretty good too. The spicy queso dip was okay.. I think it had too much pepper in it and on the chips but maybe that was their spice in the "spicy". There were several things on the menu I wanted to try but I did choose the Italian sausage sandwich and fries. Their fries were good, the sandwich wasn't my favorite though. I think it was missing a sauce and the waitress told me she would recommend a side of marina sauce for 30cents or BBQ sauce (also at cost). I didn't think either sounded that good so I opted out and ate the sandwich as is. It had good flavor though, I'd definitely come back and try a different menu item next time! read more

My family has been regulars here for several years - eat here once or twice a month at least. Has been one of our favorite places to meet up as a family. But we all are coming from different places - the younger generation after work. My folks usually get there early with the grandson - order apps and drinks - sometimes pre order everyone's food. This has never been a problem in the past because they arrive at times that are not busy - before the dinner rush and everyone is there before the rush as well. This week they arrived around 5 and were told that they could not sit until the entire party had arrived - the restaurant was fairly empty at this point. They said okay, even though this wasn't usual. Several of the servers either recognized my parents or were just being considerate - approached them to make sure they had been served. My parents explained that they had been told that they could not sit until everyone was there this time. About 20 minutes in - when approached again - my father - who is diabetic and has to eat at specific times - said something about how they might need to leave and go somewhere else if they could not sit and get appetizers as they usually do. The server was kind and said they wished it was possible. At that point my father went outside to wait for my brother and SIL. When my brother arrived they came back in side at which point the manager came over and said something like - "I hear you're pretty hot" - to my dad. And my dad explained the situation. And then the manager said "I hear you threatened to walk out of here" and my dad said - "well I said that we might need to leave and go somewhere else if we couldn't be seated soon". To which the manager responded "well- then just go. No one tells me how to run my restaurant". So everyone left - the six top tables were still open. My nephew was very upset. Now my parents will not be back - after many many years of going there regularly! read more

A great stop for lunch! This place is decently close to my office and offers a fun atmosphere and nice selection of food. There is a little of everything on the menu, so there is something for everyone. The spicy queso is not super spicy but it has a nice flavor. The salsa is really great.
