We took the train to the top of the Gornergrat and were dressed for the cold but layered as we knew we were going to hike back down to Zermatt (estimated to be 4 hours.) At the top it's chilly and I think more often than not the elusive Matterhorn sits teasing its fans with a cloud coverage that just seems to sit in front of the peak. We started the trek down and enjoyed the postcard views. You truly feel like you have been transposed onto a movie set. The scenery is beyond words. The hiking trails are very well marked for the boundless tourists--so you don't feel like you can get lost, but you don't feel too isolated either. Everyone sort of goes their own way and at their own pace so you are on your own. About a quarter of the way down, the fog burned off and for the rest of our time on the Gornergrat, we had a bucket list view!! Invest in a good camera if you don't already have one. Of course, you can spend more time than we had in Zermatt and take the train partially up and just hike around the mountain, but if you only have a day, I highly recommend this gorgeous hike. And don't think it's not exercise because it's downhill, our legs were burning and were very sore for 2 days afterwards.

When we got to the station, her credit card was charged for 2 tickets and 2 priority boarding but when she was checking our tickets and priority boarding, only 1 was showing up. So, we went to the ticketing office to get clarification but the man was just plain rude and not helpful. He was not there to listen or help. Before you could even get a word out, he's already dismissing you and wants you to buy another ticket. This experience would have been an easy 5 stars if it wasn't for this terrible man. We missed our train because of all this nonsense so we had to wait to catch the next train. The people in front of us at priority boarding was also having issues with their ticket and they had theirs printed. So obviously, it's the ticketing system that's the issue. When all the drama got sorted, we were the first ones to board and got first dibs on seats next to the window so we get a good view of Matterhorn on the way up. The return trip doesn't have a separate line for priority boarding so, it was a bit more chaotic but we managed to get window seats again. The train is a bit cramped especially if you're sitting with taller/ wider people - there's no first class carriages.

Warning that it gets very hot in the train on sunny days so bring sunglasses and layers. Also online it says that you are not allowed to take skis onboard but we were able to take both of our ski bags with no issue, there was even a rack to put them in. Just make sure to be one of the first onboard to ensure space. To note on the above too we actually tried to ship our skis to St Moritz via SBB but the reps for SBB refused to mail them once they found out we were only doing that because the glacier express website said not to bring them and they told us they've never seen skis get denied boarding from Zermatt.

The scenery that this train passes through is very spectacular and there are certain portions where…read morethe train is climbing up or down some pretty steep grades and it can feel like a roller coaster ride, especially with the sharp turns. The entire route goes from Zermatt to St Moritz though I only rode the Brig to Chur portion which includes the highest point of the entire line. However, the train requires a reservation which means you can't decide to get on on a spur of the moment and it's pretty reasonable that they require a reservation: it was packed when I got on and it was only a Wednesday in May which is the off season for travel in Switzerland. The reservation was pretty pricy as well and that doesn't include the overpriced (but still decent) food they serve on board. Keep in mind that most if not all of the length of the line is covered by other trains which you can ride for no extra charge with a Swiss Travel Pass though you may need to change trains many times. The crowded and somewhat loud setting of the train does take away from the experience a little; if you don't mind appearing antisocial, definitely consider bringing noise canceling headphones. Honestly, I would only recommend booking this if you happen to be going in this direction anyways (or in the other way from east to west along Southern Switzerland); I don't think it's worth the time and money to go out of your way to take this train if, say, you're going back to the same hotel to spend the night after finishing your journey on the Glacier Express.

I guess in a tourist town like Zermatt they figure they can do what ever they want. Best to walk or use the hotel shuttle. I suggest the tourist office should clamp down on Schaller, bad for business.

Zermatt isn't really a big enough place to need taxis. I used one to get to the youth hostel as I…read morewasn't sure where it was and had a rucksack with me. Zermatt's streets are narrow and crowded with pedestrians near the centre. The little electric taxis need a lot of power for the hills in the upper reaches and this means on the level parts they can move at some pretty amazing speeds. I have rarely been as scared as I was in a Bolero Taxi. As to price, if I'd known I could walk it in five minutes I would have. Very expensive!
