On January 2, 2016 I purchased a size 14 Walala Body Shapes jumper from the Gorman store on Adelaide st (Brisbane). The cost of the jumper was $109 (full priced).
I have been a Gorman Brisbane costumer for a few years now but since I encountered the following issues with this jumper, I request an audit of the fabric quality used by Gorman.
The jumper is a mix of tencel, wool and alpaca (mostly tencel). The label says to wash in cold water by hand with mild detergent.
The jumper was washed on gentle cycle in cold water and mild detergent. The machine gentle cycle is considered the equivalent of hand wash. As the name describes it, the cycle is gentle on the clothes including the spinning cycle which is at very light speed. All wool or gentle fabrics have no issues under these conditions. However the Gorman jumper in question required reshaping and stretching after only a couple of washes. After its last wash this week, the jumper has shrunk to the measurements seen in the pictures attached (53cm length). From adult size 14, now it is a small child size.
While I am certain that Gorman costumer care will critique the washing style I employed because it deviates from the hand cold wash warning, I will strongly argue that a washing machine gentle cold wash is the equivalent of, and in some aspects better than, a hand wash. After all, how is a hand wash standardised from household to household? Moreover, the machine gentle cycle that I use has never affected fabrics before.
As everyone knows, "cold hand wash" is a standard warning care on most "special" items (similar to the food care warning "this product may contain nuts"). Also, as everyone knows, these days all households use washing machines which deliver various washing cycle to cater for the variety of fabrics. Probably because of this, "hand wash" care labels should no longer be allowed on garments since most (if not all) people will never follow these instructions.
The Gorman brand is expensive and therefore it is expected to deliver quality. Using natural fabric in their products is attractive to costumers such as myself but not at the cost of poor manufacturing of such fabrics. Purchasing a size 14 jumper and ending with a small child size jumper after a few washes is not demonstrating quality fabric. Gorman must take responsibility for the product quality.
Therefore I request a full refund from Gorman and their reassurance that their fabric quality will be increased so that I can continue shop with the brand.
