Luckily, the two coincided, and as I returned from visiting the Cathedral and walking up, then down, Steep Hill, I found, and went into, Goodies. The sweet shop and it's employees provided a welcome relief from the cold wind. The walls lined with bottles of sweets captured my attention for rather a while, and when I apologised for taking so long to choose, I was told not to worry. I eventually left with a bag of toasted teacakes - which, to my delight, were not at all stale, a problem I've had in other sweet shops - and a bag of jelly raspberries and blackberries for my boyfriend. I could quite easily have left with a lot more. And in a way, was rather thankful that I had to dash off to catch a bus, otherwise I would have gone home with my wallet rather a lot lighter!

They didn't have the Irish Coffee Truffles... So I decided to take the opportunity to try a few different ones. I tried one champagne, one white chocolate, and one Almondine. While the white chocolate truffle was so creamy and smooth, the Almondine truffle was by far my favourite. The outside of the truffle is covered in toasted almond slivers and the combination of that with the creamy chocolate is pure heaven! Don't worry, I didn't miss the coach...

The shop stocks quite a few varieties of chocolates there are huge boxes of chocolates with different centres, and little bags of smaller chocolate treats. They do an amazing proper drinking chocolate, and a wide array of chocolate covered fruits. And have you ever seen their enormous chocolate slabs? It's worth popping into the shop just to see those they are gorgeous, massive slabs of chocolate with different flavours and toppings, and the size of them has to be seen to be believed! The types of chocolate available are enough to make anyones mouth water as you take a walk around and count the 1000's of calories that you could easily devour in just five minutes alone in there! My favourite has to be these large 'slabs' of chocolate that they have on sale. Flavours of them vary, but there is a great one that is crammed with fruits and has whole berrys sat on top of the delicious thick chocolate. The place is a nice visit and the staff are good. Once you have decided on what to give into then it is well packaged and comes in a nice bag and so makes a great gift.

The chocolate version is similar to the traditional egg in that they share the same shape, milk chocolate shell flavor, and the proportion of chocolate to filling. Obviously the first difference is the wrapping on this egg is a dazzling silver and purple color. This is a big upgrade over the more lackluster brown packaging in the past. Secondly, is the crème filling being a thick, sweet, and delicious chocolate. The egg is a little messy, but the thickness of the chocolate crème prevents it from oozing too much while eating it. It's almost like a frosting it's so thick! As I munched on this egg the crème filling's flavor reminded me of Hershey syrup. There is a Pick and Mix by the door, as well as multi-packs of classic bars like Dairy Milk, Marvellous Creations, Wispa and Flake to name but a few. Packets of Roses and Heroes chocolate selections too, as well as seasonal favourites like Chocolate Oranges and large Toblerones. Some more unusual items can be found too like packs of Sherbert Dib Dabs, Sherbert Fountains and Fry's dark chocolate bars, haven't seen them in a long time. Very busy every time we visit, but at Christmas especially so. Overall, a great place to find a bargain at any time of the year.

The Co-op is a large supermarket on the main road through Castle Donington and has it's own…read morecarpark, which also has a good recycling point. As well as the supermarket there is the adjacent Co-op travelshop and a small cafe. There are toilets on site which a well maintained. The Co-op has been extended in recent years so now as well as the usual grocery items there is small selection of electricals, homewares, toys etc. They also have one corner of the store dedicated to seasonal items. The choice is good and the store clean. The staff are very friendly and helpful, especially the older 'regulars'. There is a kiosk till for tobacco & lottery sales. The prices are very reasonable, especially given it is the only shop of that size in the village and has a somewhat captive audience. If you are a regular shopper it is worth getting a Dividend card for 5% back on all co-op branded items you buy - this is sent out in voucher form twice a year. Being located in Donington close to the track when there are busy events on such as motor racing or the Download Festival the shop becomes very busy. They handle it quite well but even so it puts a strain on their facilities and it's not unusual to find essentials sold old over busy weekends.
