I love how they're able to work with kids on an individual level cause it's so small. It's very much a micro school which is great cause I feel like we matter and I can make an impact, etc. but that's totally not for everyone, of course. There's a tiny bit of religious stuff which has been ok for us. It's mostly sweet and filtered through the female, mother, pastor. It's not fancy, very much a back to basics school. My 3 year old daughter has been attending the preschool program here for the past 6 months. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this school. The teachers are highly experienced and care so much about each individual child. From the moment we took our first tour, we have felt at home here. The director is incredibly kind and caring and knows all the students. It really feels like we are part of a close community. My daughter has learned so much! She is writing her name independently and is starting to read, sounding out letters. The tuition is highly affordable, probably the best value you can find in Highland Park. We have loved our time at Good Shepherd's Center for Child Development. Both my children have gone there and feel safe, loved and supported. The program is play based and our kids have made a wonderfully diverse group of friends. My child has attended Good Shepherd since Pre-K. We were looking for something local that wasn't a public school and would still cater to our need for early drop off and late pick up at times, due to work schedules. What we got was so much more! I have seen my child grow and flourish at this school. During 5th grade, we thought it was time to integrate our child to public school to get our child acclimated to a larger group setting of peers. However, that didn't work out well at all. My child was bullied at our local school, and within a matter of 5 months, we had to pull our child out. We ended up re-enrolling back at Good Shepherd and that was the best decision we ever made. Our child is thriving once again, and it's all due to the staff at Good Shepherd. From the principal, to the teacher and all staff in between, they have a done a great job at re-building the self-confidence that was broken down by the public school system. After seeing so many positive reviews of this school, I feel very surprised. However, I am going to just speak about what happened when we attended Good Shepherd and what has happened since our leaving. I was looking for a school in 2015 that would adequately prepare my 4 year old son for Kindergarten this coming fall 2016. I spoke to Ms. Jackie and was very interested in the preschool. He had sort of outgrown daycare and I was looking to introduce educational structure in his daily routine. I agreed with her education and discipline strategies and felt like he would be under great care. At my first meeting, although I spoke about my hesitations, I was encouraged to enroll my son into the Jr. K program, not the preschool. This was due to the admin feeling that he was able to handle it. I was told that if there was an issue, that we would revisit the preschool idea. First week, I was called in for a meeting. My son was struggling with staying on task and not following directions. I have 10+ years experience working with children with learning and emotional setbacks. Needless to say, I brought resources. I created a chart that would assist my son with expecting and accepting transition times. It had stickers that he would use to acknowledge the coming transitions. The problem seemed to be that he did not want to stop playing during recess or free times. Mrs. G. was somewhat rigid about my ideas. She has a color system that judges each child's overall day (Red= Very Poor, Yellow=Poor, Blue=Needs Improvement, & Green=Excellent). It did not seem like she had many other tricks up her sleeve. I asked about what was being done to redirect my child's behavior. I asked her if my son had yet been given a helping job in the class, she had not gotten around to it. I asked if my son was ever asked to sit near the teacher, until ready to be in the group, no. I asked if my son was asked to leave the group for timeouts, she let me know that time outs were done at the table, still included in the group. MIND YOU, THIS IS THE FIRST WEEK. The principal suggested that I have my son evaluated by his pediatrician and predicted that this situation would only work out if I were to pay a one on one person to assist my child with functioning in the class. Mrs. G. seemed relieved that I identified their concern that my son has an attention disorder and encouraged me to follow through with it. His behaviors included: not following directions, lack of focus, walking on ground rocks that no one is allowed to walk on...that is all. HE IS 4 YEARS OLD. He also entered mid-year. I reminded them that I was not trying to enroll him in Jr. Kindergarten, that I felt he would best fit in the preschool. (no room in Pre K) They let me know that they are not in the routine of terminating students, but that if after a few weeks, things did not get better, they would have to suggest that we leave. Next week, we were asked to chaperone a field trip. My fiance attended. He mentioned to me that he felt like the trip to the museum was just walking around and lacked substance on the teacher's part. Like it was just a timesuck until they could go back. They did not attend a tour, teach at all and he felt like he was managing issues between the children that were the teacher's responsibility to handle. After the first day he was there, my son received Red each day. It got so bad that he began to rip his paper so that I would not see. He started to feel HORRIBLE about himself. He continued to not listen and did not feel like the teacher liked him. When I came to the school each time, I felt isolated, excluded, embarrassed and looked upon with pity. I spoke to Ms. Jackie about how I felt and she empathized with me saying "You must feel like coming here with a paper bag over your head." She then reminded me that I work with her daughter. She told me that she spoke to her daughter about my situation, which I believe is a violation of my privacy and said that they suggest that my son take advantage of the resources that my non-profit agency provides. We were asked to leave before Thanksgiving Break. The week before, I had started sitting in on classes...I dont feel like they liked that very much. I was refunded my money and apologized to for them not having the resources for my son. I have taken my son to his physician. I was told that he is a normal, extremely intelligent 5 year old boy. It has been 6 months since that school ended. My son is back in day care, doing fine. When people ask him if he is in school, he says "No, I got kicked out." It cuts me so deep that I want to cry each time he says it. This stupid school has made my son not only scared to death of attending Kindergarten in the fall, but he expresses that he feels rejected by Mrs. G and his school EVERY TIME WE DRIVE BY. I am so furious that this is what I am left with as a foundation for my child's education. read more

OVERALL Speaking to the Pre-K experience, we've found it to be a diverse environment with a mix of play & basic academic learning. Little ones can enroll at 2 years, 9 months, and must be potty trained. We had an OK experience here. It is somewhat bare bones though, so if your child has any special needs, you may want to look elsewhere. SCHEDULE/COSTS The PreK/Child Development Center option offers part-time or full-time days, with care extending 7a-6p. The full-time costs $600/month. Hot lunches are optional at $3.50/meal, with $5 fund-raiser meals for school programs mixed in. OTHER STUFF There are bonus programs offered, such as soccer, Being Davinci, and 4-H at additional cost. Annual events like the Harvest Festival & celebrations around the holidays give families a chance to participate and enrich their kids' experience at the school. Our son attended preschool here and then left to go to our home school, Mt Washington Elementary which was great then became terrible with the principal and all the bullying and race issues. We pulled our son out in Oct. 2017 and Good Shepherd was our first choice because we wanted the small town feel, small classes, zero tolerance for bullying and a Christian education was a priority after being in public school. With GS you get an individualized education and concerns are prioritized. For us communication was key and our child succeeded in this environment. Registration, tuition, books, fundraisers are part of a private education, if it's a problem consider all your options. Donations are not required but we gave because why not. Ms C was the best teacher ever and our son responded well to her. Like most private schools if your child has a learning disability or behavioral problems a small school will not suit your needs like a public school can where they can address special education concerns with more resources. As a volunteer I saw this. Parking and drop off along with pick up was easy. GS families and staff became our family. We shared the same values and God comes first. We attended church on Sunday's, 4H Club (super fun), special weekday dinners, Food Truck Tuesdays, and rummage sales. For our experience and our sons was the best. We had placed our children (4 years old & 3 years old) at another pre-school and for whatever reason they were not too happy there. We thought maybe it was because it was a new school. We decided to give GOOD SHEPHERD a two week try and was like night and day! The kids were happy there instantly! They enjoyed going to GOOD SHEPHERD from day one! The staff is great, the classes are filled with items the kids make and the kids are kept busy with different activities such as learning their letters, art projects, books, and other activities. My kids attended GS year 2016-2017. Me and my wife are very happy with Good Shepherd Lutheran School. Also the kids loves the school. Miss Sylvia and Miss Jackie are really good teachers at Pre-K. Ms Yulo the first grade teacher is awesome. Also, Ms. Consolacion the fifth grade teacher is great. They also have staff in the mornings and afternoon to look after your kids. The best priced school and best teachers ever. Our twin girls were there for a little over a year and we absolutely LOVED Miss Jackie, Miss Sylvia and Miss Milly. They truly cared about their students. They were not there just to care for the children but also to educate and discipline them. Unfortunately, we had to leave because we moved out of state. In response to Gloria W.'s comment, I would have to strongly disagree that a child would get kicked out of preschool for no reason after only 3 days. My child attends this school and was there to witness the events. Unfortunately my child was choked by the child in mention. It was an unfortunate incident. I believe the School had to do what needed to be done for the best interest and safety of all other students. My child has attended Good Shepherd since 2 years and 9 months. My child is now going on 5. My child loves Good Shepherd and we couldn't ask for better teachers for our child. The curriculum is top notch and my child is extremely advanced for my child's age. What a blessing finding this school. I am so glad I took the time to enquire about enrolling my son here for the CDC program. As we first walked in, we were already amazed how friendly the staff was. Especially meeting Ms. Jacky for the first time, we were impressed by her friendly personality. She is the CDC director and she is awesome. My son is 3 years old and is in the koala class with Ms. Millie. I can't say enough good things about this school and the teachers. Ms. Sylvia and Ms. Mary are extremely great too. I had really hit the jackpot enrolling our son here. Tuition is reasonable and definitely worth it. My son loves coming here and he has improved alot with his social skills and with alphabets and numbers. This is a Lutheran school so they do religious activities which is great because it teaches my son about God. I am glad I found this school. It's a safe environment for my son! Two of my children have attended Good Shepherd School and we are very pleased with it. The staff is incredibly caring, yet firm with their discipline. They prepare children very well for kindergarten in a traditional approach. There is a lot of practice, and share time as well as play. They put on lots of little singing performances and kids leave feeling very confident on stage! We just moved from Arizona and living in LA public school district that I heard is not good. We know we want to send her to a private school as an alternative. We are so glad we found Good Shepherd Lutheran school near our home (only 1.2 mile). Their price is surprisingly affordable despite being known as one of the most admirable school in the area. My daughter's experience has been great, there is no day that she ever cry. Her teacher, Mrs G and Mrs. Jasmine in Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten are a great team. I am also very pleased with the student ratio that they keep it small. The school teaches the kids to have love for God and for others, respect your parents and teachers, and all the values we agree on. We are so blessed to have a school that support our beliefs and help us train our child in God's Words. They teach the kids Sunday school songs and listen to bible story on Wednesday at chapel time. Your children will be in a safe, nurturing and loving environment where they can learn to be confident, responsible, loving and respect others. I can not wait until my son goes there too. I wasn't sure if our daughter was ready for Jr.K just yet when she started last fall. She had been attending a pre-k c-op program a couple of days a week and home with me most of the time. She never napped at home and she asked for a snack every 20 minutes. She is very bright, but I didn't think she was ready for a traditional class room just yet. At my husband's urging ( a trusted his work colleague recommended the school to us ), we went to visit the school. The children in the pre-k class were working quietly in their desks and Mrs. G was able to go over her class instruction with us and explanation of a typical school day. Mrs. G was very sweet and spoke with confidence that our daughter would do just fine. I was not convinced, but we decided to enroll her for the fall. Well, our daughter excelled beyond our expectations. Mrs. G and Ms. Jasmine were just what she needed to get focused and be challenged. She not only took naps every day, but she never asked for a snack until lunch time! She loved going to school every morning and worked diligently on her homework every week. Class field trips were lots of fun and as a chaperone I was able to see how this small class interacted with each other and the teachers. I also enjoyed our daughter's songs learned in music class. She was performing a new song every week! And the best part is that she was taught many of her songs in American Sign Language which was delightful for us because her older sister is deaf. Not only was our daughter nurtured academically, and artistically, she has been given a good biblical foundation as well, which is very important to our family. We are very involved in our own church, so we missed many of the Good Shepherd Lutheran services, but the Christian education she was being taught enriched what she was also learning in Sunday school. Even though Mrs. G was strict about the no whining rule, which we were glad about because this helped at home as well, Mrs. G and Ms. Jasmine were both kind and loving towards the kids and once when Mrs. G was out sick, our daughter woke every morning hoping that she was better and would be back at school. All the kids missed her and were genuinely concerned for her. This was extremely touching. I'll end with this great story: There is a kind man at the school who is in charge of various things around the campus and is also a parent. He's there every morning to watch the kids in before care and in the playground about 30 minutes before the school day starts. He kept an eye on the Jr. K very well and he knew how much our daughter loved to swing before school. I had to push her because she had not yet learned to swing herself like all of her classmates had and if I had to leave early he or another classmate would take over for me. All of the other kids in her class, her teachers and Mr. Meza tried to help her learn to swing. Finally, The last month of the school year she was able to do it on her own and all the kids were so happy for her. Needless to say she told me I could go home because she didn't need help on the swing anymore. This was bittersweet for me, but an independent milestone for her. My point is that she was encouraged everyday for the entire year by her classmates, her teachers and Mr. Meza and never felt like she had failed. She just kept trying until finally she was ready. We are so grateful for the education and love our daughter received at Good Shepherd Lutheran school this past year. We are moving to Texas this summer and will miss everyone there so much. Our daughter just turned 5 in June and is already reading sight words and sounding out others. She has been given an incredible foundation at Good Shepherd Lutheran School. read more

I love the Child Development Center at the Good Shepherd. The School is small and the teachers develop a very personal relationship with the students & parents. My son has been going there for over 10mths. Since attending this school he has greatly matured both socially & academically. In addition the CDC schedule offers various times/days to chose from and their tuition is reasonable in comparision to most Daycares in the area. I finally found what we have been looking for! A traditional preschool with a great staff that loves kids! I have been visiting preschools on and off for the past 3 years because I have two young boys. This is not an easy task in Los Angeles where most schools cost more than my mortgage and have a million year what list. Since winning the award for best preschool in the area you may now be faced with a wait list but worth the wait. Other schools we have enrolled our kids in were ok but couldn't afford to enroll them full time to do the cost. Now that my oldest son started Kindergarten I realize that kids really do need preschool these days since Kindergarten is now like my first grade experience. I am confident that sending my 3 year old to this school will give him a great foundation to enter Kindergarten. The director Ms. Kim is the best! She will give you a tour of the school which you must see in person to see how big it is and feel the warm environment the school offers. Ms. Jacky is the best Preschool teacher ever and have been teaching for 25 years! Every day there is new work in my child's folder which is great seeing what they worked on that day. This school is what every working parent dreams of. I never have to worry when I drop off my little one in the morning because I know he is in good hands. The school is entirely gated and very secure. I thank you Good Shepherd for creating a loving environment for children to experience at an affordable price. More schools should do the same! Beware! School registration is $100.00 and is non-refundable. There is a two week probation period, my son was not welcomed after only three days in pre-school. Also school supplies that we purchased and are mandatory, were not returned. This is a private religious school, so they can cherry pick their students, that is how they artificially can keep their scores high and are not willing to put the effort to actually work with all kinds of children. Our daughter attended Good Shepherd for grades 4 - 6. Choosing a small, private Lutheran school over a local public school was possibly the best thing we have ever done for her as parents. Now that she's a 9th grader in a public high school, our girl continues to benefit from the advantages of a Good Shepherd education. We see that she does better academically, and has more self-confidence and maturity than most of her peers. She wakes up every morning excited to go to school & every weekend i still have to explain to her there is no school on Saturdays & Sundays because if she could she would go lol. I have my 3 year old and 5 year old attending the preschool and elementary school. I am very pleased with the academic curriculum and the quality of the staff members at Good Shepherd. Good Shepherd is like a hidden jewel. My husband and I were looking for a school that was close to home, high in academics and affordable. We just happened to be walking and we saw the sign. We always drove passed the school but never noticed that it was a school as well as a church. We called and the principal answered the phone and set us an appointment the following Monday. We met with Ms. Kim (pre-school teacher) who took us on a tour of the school. I must say I was very surprised to see how big the inside of the school was. I sat in on the kinder class before making my decision to enroll my 5 year old and as they say, that's all she wrote!! Ms. Springfield is fantastic! She was very organized, and answered all my questions and concerns. After enrolling my 5 year old there were some concerns regarding him reading at the level of the rest of the children. I met with Ms. Springfield we all worked together as a team and I am proud to say my son is a very strong reader and excelling in 1st grade. We also receive a 25% discount because both our children attend the school. Once our preschooler enters Kinder, we will receive a 50% discount. ( You can't beat that) The classes are smaller than an average school but we are happy about that because we don't want our son getting lost in high student ratio like other allegedly top rated schools in the Pasadena area. I have my son enrolled in the CDC/Pre-School since July 2014. My son has developed his social skills/manners, has learned so much and grown spiritually this past year. All of the teachers are great and have A LOT of patience in dealing with so many personalities. Ms Kim, Ms. Sylvia and Ms. Jacky are great! They are hands on, communicate to you any issues and give suggestions. I am glad I have found this great environment for my son. It is worth every penny. This is a Lutheran School, so they do include Religious events, but they don't force it on families of a different faiths or beliefs. Just know that your child will be exposed to Christ's teachings.
