My daughter started at Santa Catalina as a summer camper and based on her fabulous experience, we…read moretook the leap and she became a resident (boarding) high school student. Camp: Camp at Catalina is outstanding. There are two, three and five week programs. Every staff member was outstanding. The girls stay in the dorms, eat amazing food (really!), do fun and engaging activities and take part in long standing camp traditions. My daughter would cry every year when I would pick her up. She made life long pals and became very close with staff members who eventually became mentors to her during her high school years. School: Yes, I sent my fabulous, well-behaved, straight A student to boarding school. Boarding school is NOT for bad girls. Girls with a strong moral compass, a desire to lead and a thirst to learn can excel at a school like Catalina. My daughter was welcomed with open arms after being accepted at SCS as an incoming freshman (9th grader). Yes, she knew many of the faces from camp and it did make moving there from Southern California a bit easier. Staff, administrators and teachers quickly became trusted family members for her and other students became sisters. She was challenged every day academically and graduated with honors. She was accepted to several top colleges including Boston University, NYU and UC Berkeley. More importantly, she is a young woman who is poised, confident, aware of the world around her and comfortable is sharing her thoughts, views and desires. Not every day at boarding school was easy but a phone call from me to anyone would help both of us get through the tough times with a talk, a visit or a hug. I could make this a way longer review so I will just say that Catalina is amazing place and girls are blessed to go there. If you have questions, feel free to message me through Yelp and I'll answer anything.

I could talk all day about my experience here! I was a summer counselor in 2018 and I adored all of…read moremy students. They were such a joy to be around and such precious souls. I made lifelong friends here and had one of the best summers ever working to enrich the youth and traveling through California. However, this camp was run by a racist, homophobic woman. She repeatedly discriminated against me and quite literally bullied me when at the time I was only 18 years old and she was almost 60. I'm pretty sure she wanted me to quit because she constantly picked on me and singled me out. Julie was her name. She also discriminated against some of the children who are part of the LGBTQ+ community. There were several students who traveled from Mexico to attend the summer camp and she prohibited them from speaking Spanish which I felt was just discriminatory and downright wrong. These are girls as young as 7/8 years old. It was so horrible to watch a grown woman diminish the confidence and demean the character of little girls who could've looked up to her. Even though every single one of my children loved and adored me as their counselor (they gave me so many gifts throughout the summer and even had their parents give me gifts at the end), when I applied to return as a counselor the following summer I was denied the position and it is very clear why... I think it's a great place to send your children, as they will make meaningful lifelong connections and have an opportunity to learn and grow, however I truly do question the people who run this institution.
